Chapter 74: The Betrayer's Whisper

\~~~

The figure’s words hung in the air like a thundercloud, each syllable heavy with implications Felicia couldn’t yet process.

Her heartbeat quickened as her free hand instinctively moved to her abdomen. Nelson’s grip on her other hand tightened, a silent anchor in the storm of emotions threatening to overwhelm her.

“Who are you?” Felicia demanded again, her voice colder now, sharpened with a mix of suspicion and fear.

The figure stepped further into the room, their movements deliberate, almost theatrical. The light revealed sharp features, eyes like burning coals, and a mouth curled into a knowing smile.

“Names are irrelevant,” the figure said, their voice smooth and unhurried. “What matters is that I know exactly who you are—what you’re hiding—and who is hunting you.”

Felicia exchanged a glance with Nelson, whose expression mirrored her alarm. “You’re playing a dangerous game, walking into my home with riddles and threats,” she said, taking a step forward.

The figure chuckled, their amusement chilling. “Oh, Felicia, I’m not the one playing games. But you are running out of time to realize who’s holding all the pieces.”

Before Felicia could respond, Tobias stepped forward, his sword already half-drawn. “Enough of this. Speak plainly or leave.”

The figure raised a gloved hand, palm outward. “Patience, General. I’m here to offer a bargain—not a fight.”

“Why should we trust you?” Nelson asked, his voice tight with controlled fury.

“Because I’m the only one who can stop Ryker’s resurgence,” the figure replied, their smile fading. “And because you can’t afford not to.”

\---

The room seemed to freeze, the weight of the claim pressing on everyone present. Felicia’s mind raced. Ryker had been defeated—his forces scattered and his power broken. They had seen to it themselves. Yet this stranger spoke of him as though he were still a threat.

“Ryker is finished,” Tobias said firmly. “You’re lying.”

The figure tilted their head, their smile returning. “Finished? No. Wounded? Certainly. But do you really believe a man like Ryker would accept defeat so easily? He’s already rebuilding, even as we speak.”

Felicia’s chest tightened. “What do you want?”

The figure’s gaze softened slightly, as though they had been waiting for her to ask. “To help you. But my help comes at a price.”

“And what price is that?” Nelson asked, stepping in front of Felicia protectively.

The figure’s eyes flicked to Nelson, then back to Felicia. “Truth. A secret for a secret. You’ve been hiding something, Felicia, and I want to know what it is.”

The words struck her like a physical blow. She faltered, her hand instinctively moving to her stomach again.

Nelson stiffened beside her. “She owes you nothing.”

The figure ignored him, their gaze locked on Felicia. “This isn’t about owing me. This is about survival. Ryker already has informants inside your walls, watching your every move. Do you really think you can keep your little...condition a secret forever?”

Felicia’s blood ran cold. The air around her seemed to grow heavier, pressing against her chest until she could barely breathe.

“How do you know that?” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

The figure smiled, triumphant. “Because there are no secrets from me.”

\---

The room erupted into chaos. Tobias lunged forward, sword drawn, but the figure moved with inhuman speed, sidestepping the attack with ease.

“Enough!” Felicia shouted, her voice slicing through the commotion.

Tobias froze, his sword hovering inches from the figure’s throat. The stranger didn’t flinch, their calm demeanor unbroken.

Felicia stepped forward, her hands clenched into fists. “If you know so much, then you know what’s at stake here. We don’t have time for games or threats. Either tell us what you know about Ryker or leave.”

The figure’s expression darkened. “Ryker has found an ally—one far more dangerous than you can imagine. They’ve already begun consolidating power, and if you don’t act quickly, your kingdom will fall within the month.”

“Who?” Tobias demanded.

The figure hesitated, their confidence faltering for the first time. “That is...complicated.”

Felicia narrowed her eyes. “Complicated? You expect us to trust you, but you won’t even give us a name?”

The figure sighed, their shoulders slumping slightly. “Fine. But remember, you asked for this.”

They leaned in closer, their voice dropping to a whisper. “Ryker’s new ally is someone from your past, Felicia. Someone you trusted.”

The words hit her like a dagger to the chest. Her mind raced, sifting through memories and faces, searching for a name that fit.

“That’s impossible,” she said, shaking her head.

The figure straightened, their expression grim. “Is it? You’d be surprised how far people will go for power.”

Before Felicia could respond, the room shook violently, a deep rumble reverberating through the walls. Dust rained down from the ceiling, and the sound of distant shouting reached their ears.

“What now?” Tobias muttered, gripping his sword tightly.

A soldier burst into the room, his face pale and frantic. “They’ve breached the eastern wall! We’re being overrun!”

Felicia’s heart sank. She turned to Nelson, who was already moving toward the door despite his injuries.

“We’ll finish this conversation later,” she said, her voice steely as she turned back to the figure.

The stranger smirked. “If you survive, that is.”

Without another word, they vanished into the shadows, leaving Felicia with more questions than answers.

\---

The battle outside was chaos. Flames licked at the edges of the estate, and the sound of clashing steel filled the air. Felicia fought with everything she had, her movements fueled by adrenaline and desperation.

Nelson was never far from her side, his presence a constant source of strength. But as the battle raged on, Felicia couldn’t shake the figure’s words from her mind.

Someone from her past. Someone she trusted.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden cry from Nelson. She turned just in time to see him fall, a crossbow bolt lodged in his shoulder.

“Nelson!” she screamed, rushing to his side.

“I’m fine,” he gritted out, his face pale but determined. “Keep fighting.”

But Felicia couldn’t leave him. She knelt beside him, her hand trembling as she reached for the bolt.

“Don’t,” Nelson said, grabbing her wrist. “It’s not worth it.”

Tears blurred her vision, but she shook her head. “You’re worth it.”

Before she could say more, a shadow fell over them. She looked up to see a towering figure clad in black armor, their weapon raised.

Felicia’s heart stopped. She had no time to react, no time to protect Nelson—or herself.

But just as the blade came down, an arrow whistled through the air, striking the armored figure in the neck. They collapsed in a heap, revealing Tobias standing a few feet away, his bow still raised.

“Get up!” Tobias shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Felicia helped Nelson to his feet, her mind racing. The battle wasn’t over—not by a long shot.

As they regrouped, the distant sound of horns echoed through the night. Felicia’s blood ran cold. Those weren’t their horns.

“What is that?” Nelson asked, his voice hoarse.

Tobias’s face was grim. “Reinforcements. But not ours.”

Felicia’s heart sank as she turned toward the horizon. In the distance, a new army was approaching—one that carried Ryker’s banner.

The war wasn’t over. It was just beginning….
