Chapter 110
The healers kept Zuriel in the medical wing for two weeks. Monitoring. Testing. Trying to understand what he had become. What absorbing the Devourer had done to him. What it meant for his future. For Unity's future.
"Your magical signature is completely gone," Dr. Chen said. She ran another scan. Checked the results twice. Looked confused. "Not suppressed. Gone. You have no magic. No supernatural energy. No connection to any bloodline. You are reading as completely human. But that is impossible. You carry the Void. You absorbed the Devourer. You should be radiating power. Instead you are radiating nothing."
"That is what the Void is. Nothing. Absence. The complete lack of everything. I am not radiating power because power does not exist in me anymore. Only emptiness exists. Only absence. Only void."
"But you are conscious. You are talking. You are thinking. Those require energy. Require presence. Require something instead of nothing. How are you functioning?"
"I do not know. Maybe I am not supposed to be functioning. Maybe I should have died when I absorbed the Devourer. Maybe I am just delaying the inevitable. Maybe I am already dead and just have not realized it yet."
"That is dark. Even for you."
"That is honest. I feel like a ghost. Like I am here but not here. Like I am existing between states. Between being and void. Between alive and dead. Between Zuriel and nothing. I do not know which side is winning."
Mira visited daily. Brought food he could not taste. Told stories he barely heard. Held his hand when the emptiness became too much. When the Void whispered that letting go would be easier. That becoming nothing would end the struggle. That absence was peace.
"You are still here," she said firmly. "You are still my husband. Still Zuriel. The Void is lying to you. Trying to make you give up. But you do not give up. That is not who you are. That is not what Moonrise Pack does. We fight. We endure. We stay human even when being human is hard. Especially when being human is hard."
"I am tired, Mira. So tired. I have been fighting for thirty years. Fighting the Fading. Fighting Elder Marcus. Fighting the Ascended. Fighting the Devourer. Fighting the Void inside me. I do not know how much longer I can keep fighting. Do not know if I have anything left."
"Then rest. Let others fight for a while. Let others carry the burden. You do not have to be the hero every time. You do not have to save everyone. You do not have to sacrifice yourself constantly. You are allowed to be selfish. Allowed to choose yourself. Allowed to just be."
"I do not know how to just be. I only know how to fight. How to protect. How to give everything. That is who I became. Who the world needed me to be. I do not know if there is anything underneath that. If there is a Zuriel who is not fighting. Not sacrificing. Not dying for others."
"Then we find out. We discover who you are when you are not being a hero. We build a life that is not crisis to crisis. We be boring together. We sit on porches and watch sunsets. We complain about aching joints and grandchildren who do not visit enough. We grow old being ordinary. That is what we do now. That is what you earned through thirty years of fighting. You earned rest. You earned peace. You earned ordinary."
Zuriel wanted to believe her. Wanted to think he could stop. Could retire. Could be normal. But he knew better. Knew the world would not let him rest. Knew new threats would emerge. Knew someone would need saving. Knew he would answer that need because that was what he did. That was what he was.
"I will try. I will try to rest. To be ordinary. To stop fighting. But Mira, I do not think I can. I think fighting is all I know. All I am. Take that away and what remains? Just emptiness. Just void. Just absence where a person used to be."
"Then we find out. We discover what remains. We build something from the emptiness. That is what we do. That is what we have always done. Build meaning from nothing. Build hope from despair. Build life from death. We are good at that. We have practice."
Louisiana visited the next day. She brought paperwork. Council business. Things requiring Zuriel's attention despite his condition.
"You should be resting," Zuriel said. "You should be letting me recover. Not bringing me work."
"The Council needs your signature on these treaties. Needs your approval on these budgets. Needs your guidance on these policies. Unity does not stop just because you are recovering. Work continues. Life continues. Responsibility continues."
"I am barely human anymore. Barely functional. Barely capable of basic conversation. How am I supposed to lead Unity? How am I supposed to make decisions that affect millions when I can barely decide what to eat for breakfast?"
"You do your best. You trust your instincts. You rely on advisors when your instincts fail. That is what leadership is. Not knowing everything. Not being perfect. Just trying. Just showing up. Just refusing to quit even when quitting would be easier."
"You sound like my father."
"Good. He was smart. He knew what leadership required. He knew it was not about being superhuman. About being capable of everything. About never failing. He knew it was about being human. About trying despite limitations. About accepting failure and continuing anyway. That is what I learned from him. That is what you taught me. That is what I am teaching you now."
Zuriel signed the papers. Approved the budgets. Made decisions without really thinking about them. Operating on autopilot. On instinct. On the muscle memory of thirty years of leadership. It was not good leadership but it was functional. It kept Unity running. Kept the machine operating. Kept people safe while he figured out how to be human again.
His first visitor outside of family was Dominique. His father looked older. Moved slower. But his eyes were still sharp. Still saw everything. Still understood what others missed.
"How are you really?" Dominique asked. "Not the answer you give doctors. Not the answer you give Mira. The truth. How are you?"
"I am empty. I feel nothing. The world is distant. Like I am watching life through glass. I see it happening but I am not part of it. I am separate. Apart. Absent. I absorbed the Devourer and it took something from me. Something I cannot name. Something I need but do not have anymore."
"Your soul. It took part of your soul. That is what the Void does. What absence does. It consumes the thing that makes you human. The thing that connects you to others. The thing that gives meaning to existence. You are feeling disconnected because part of you is gone. Consumed. Made void."
"Can it come back? Can I get it back? Or am I like this forever? Empty. Hollow. Going through motions without feeling them. Existing without living."
"I do not know. No one has ever absorbed a Devourer and survived. No one has ever carried what you carry. You are in uncharted territory. What happens next is unknown. Could be you recover. Could be you stay like this. Could be you get worse. All we can do is support you. Help you. Show you that you are not alone even when you feel alone."
"I feel alone all the time now. Even when I am surrounded by people. Even when Mira is holding me. Even when my children are talking to me. I feel separated. Isolated. Like I am on the other side of a wall watching everyone else live while I just exist. It is terrible. It is unbearable. It makes me understand why the Devourer was so desperate to feed. Emptiness is torture. Absence is agony. Being nothing hurts more than being anything."
"Then we fill the emptiness. We give you things to connect to. We remind you constantly that you are part of something. Part of family. Part of Unity. Part of the world. We do not let you drift into void. We anchor you. Hold you. Keep you human even when being human is hard."
"How long do I have? How long before the Void consumes me completely? Before I become what I absorbed? Before I am more Devourer than Zuriel?"
"I do not know. But son, even if you only have days, those days matter. Those days are worth living. Those days are chances to connect. To love. To be. Do not waste them worrying about when they end. Spend them being present. Being here. Being with people who love you."
Dominique left. Zuriel sat alone in his room. Looking at his hands. They looked normal. Human. But they felt wrong. Felt like they belonged to someone else. Felt like they were just shapes. Just forms without substance. Without reality.
He stood up. Walked to the mirror. Looked at his reflection. It was him. Zuriel. Same face. Same body. Same scars. But the eyes were different. Empty. Hollow. Void. Looking into them was like looking into nothing. Into absence. Into the complete lack of everything.
"I am still here," he told the reflection. "I am still Zuriel. I am still human. The Void does not get to take that. Does not get to make me nothing. I am something. I matter. I am real."
The reflection did not respond. Just stared back with empty eyes. With void where soul should be. With absence where presence belonged. It was horrifying. It was devastating. It was the truth he could not escape.
He was becoming what he fought. Becoming what he absorbed. Becoming void. And there might be nothing anyone could do to stop it.
