Chapter 54
Rome's POV
As I deliberated on my next course of action, the heavy wooden door creaked open, and a warrior rushed into the room, his breaths ragged from the urgency of his message.
"Alpha King," he panted, "We have spotted a suspicious individual near the eastern boundary of the pack grounds. They appear to be attempting to conceal their presence."
His words sent a ripple of concern through the room, and all eyes turned to me expectantly, awaiting my decision on how to proceed. I had enough to deal with but what is one more thing?
The news of a suspicious person entering the pack grounds only added to the tension already simmering in the room. My mind raced with possibilities, wondering if this newcomer was somehow connected to the turmoil we were currently facing.
"Bring them to me," I ordered, my voice firm and commanding. "And send a group of warriors to discreetly investigate Essie's whereabouts."
I rose from my seat, the weight of responsibility heavy on my shoulders. It seemed that trouble had a way of finding us, but I was determined to face it head-on and protect my people at all costs.
With a firm nod, I issued my command, my voice projecting authority and determination. "We don't know if the person is alone, so take the women and children somewhere safe. The rest can come with me."
Immediately, the pack members sprang into action, some shepherding the vulnerable members to safety while others prepared to accompany me. The atmosphere in the room shifted from apprehension to focused readiness as everyone prepared for the impending encounter with the unknown intruder.
Alpha Ace and I formulated our plan to encircle the intruder, a sense of urgency gripped us. This intrusion could be connected to the mysterious disappearance of Zendaya, and we couldn't afford to overlook any potential leads. With determination fueling our actions, we coordinated the pack members to cover all possible escape routes, leaving no room for the intruder to evade capture.
Each member of the pack moved swiftly and silently into position, their senses heightened and their focus unwavering. As we waited for the signal to close in on the intruder, the tension in the air was palpable, mingling with the underlying resolve to uncover the truth behind Zendaya's disappearance.
From afar I watched the intruder walk closer and closer to the pack house. For some reason, I didn't feel any malice or ill intent coming from the intruder. So I commanded the pack members to stand down and wait. I decided to go and meet the intruder head-on.
When I approached the intruder, I could feel the tension in the air ease slightly. There was something about their demeanor that didn't quite fit the profile of a hostile threat. With cautious steps, I closed the distance between us, ready to confront whatever awaited me.
As I approached the figure, I could see the silhouette more clearly. Was that Zendaya? It was indeed Zendaya, but the state she was in alarmed me. Her clothes were torn, and bloodstains marred her skin. What the hell happened to her?
"Zendaya!" I called out, rushing forward to her. She lifted her head to face me, her eyes filled with relief and exhaustion. Like she had been searching for me for days.
"Rome," she said weakly, her voice barely above a whisper.
When she spotted me, exhaustion overtook her and she fell to her knees. Without a second thought, I rushed to her side and gathered her into my arms, holding her close. Her body felt frail and trembling against mine, and my heart clenched at the sight of her in such a vulnerable state.
"Zendaya," I murmured softly, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. "What happened? Are you hurt?"
She looked up at me, her eyes filled with weariness and pain. "The Rogues," she whispered hoarsely. "They attacked me in the woods. I managed to escape, but..."
Her words trailed off before she passed out. I tightened my embrace, offering her whatever comfort I could. "You're safe now," I assured her, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead. "I will take care of you. Let's get you inside and tend to your wounds."
I lifted her into my arms, I felt a surge of protectiveness wash over me. No one would dare harm her again, not while I was around. As I carried Zendaya into the pack house, the other warriors approached, their curiosity evident in their voices. "Alpha King, who is that?" One of them asked.
Ignoring their inquiries, I strode past them and headed straight to my room. Once inside, I gently laid Zendaya down on the bed and turned to the others. "Call the doctor," I instructed, my tone brooking no argument.
Though I wasn't addressing anyone in particular, the warriors wasted no time in following my command. They quickly dispersed to fetch the pack's doctor, knowing that swift action was necessary to tend to Zendaya's injuries.
Alone with Zendaya, I hovered anxiously by her side, my mind racing with concern for her well-being. Whatever had happened to her out there in the woods, I vowed to do everything in my power to protect her and ensure her swift recovery. I had to know what had happened, otherwise how could I help her?
While the doctor examined Zendaya, his brows furrowed in concentration, and I couldn't help but feel a rising sense of anxiety. With each passing moment of silence, my worry only grew, wondering what he might uncover. I paced back and forth across the room, my mind consumed with concern for Zendaya's well-being.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the doctor straightened up and turned to face me. His expression was inscrutable, and my heart pounded in anticipation of his assessment.
"I have some good news and bad news," the doctor said finally.
"Go ahead," I replied, my voice strained with apprehension.
"The good news is all the blood on her body and clothes are not hers, and the bad news is, she was sexually assaulted," the doctor explained.
As he continued giving me the rundown in detail, I found it increasingly difficult to focus. My mind raced, grappling with the horrifying reality of Zendaya's ordeal. What the hell happened while she was missing? I failed her really badly this time.
