Chapter 25
Demon's POV
I was personally keeping an eye on the queen and made sure I didn't really do any other thing. Not as if I didn't have work to do and not as if I couldn't send servants to do this part of my job instead. But I thought that it was best for me to observe her actions by myself. If I could find some subtle information about the language and her mannerisms that differed from the way she had been before, then maybe, just maybe, I could offer some kind of hypothesis and explanation for what was actually going on that seemed to be obscure to everyone else.
I knew what the chances were. I knew that I was probably just killing myself, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was some type of chance of me finally understanding these things here and coming up with one simple explanation. A guard wouldn't be able to observe her to such an extent. A guard would simply do his job and expect his reward later on or something like that. None of them were trained enough. None of them could make split-second decisions that would affect the outcome of my analysis.
I journaled as I went, recording how long she spent outside her room. Something told me that it was just idleness, that I would end up having nothing at all and I would regret what I was doing now and how I was tracking her, but I told myself that I wouldn't—that it wasn't, and I let myself believe that sooner or later I would understand as long as I kept on with what I was doing now.
Just for this night—if I don't get any fruits, any results, then I would not be taken tomorrow, I thought to myself, even though I knew that it was going to affect me later on in the afternoon or so when this sleep that I didn't have right now, that I was supposed to be having, would come back to haunt me. It was already affecting my life; this lady was affecting me a little more than I thought she could, but I would only let it happen just this once.
I didn't know how much it was worth it for my ultimate plan for me to continue with what I was doing now. But I decided that I would simply not stop, not yet, until I found something, or at least until this night was over. If it ended fruitless then I would rest and not let myself become too obsessed with finding something that wasn't anywhere at all.
Since I was going to be the one to regret it after, I continued watching in the background at her room door, playing a game on my phone to keep myself busy. Something told me that I was going to soon get into some kind of action. I didn't know why, but I felt like I should be active, but I just decided to relax right now and wait for things to end and go all by themselves. "It's not going to be that difficult," I told myself internally, forcing away the need to be alert and to be ready for anything.
I relaxed a little as I continued playing my game, but all of a sudden I straightened, my breathing hastening as I saw something that I didn't expect to see right now. A person that I had never seen before was suddenly showing up and seeming to show up with a mission also. I frowned as I watched and tried to understand what was actually going on and why he was here.
He was knocking on her door now, knocking excessively at that. I felt annoyed while he was acting like this. He seemed as if he was some kind of child and he was on a mission. But I restrained myself from asking, from saying anything—not yet, not until I completely understood what was going on. Instead, I made up my mind to keep watching, to be careful with what was going on and to completely understand things before I said or did anything at all.
I smiled a little, suddenly feeling a bit annoyed as I kept on watching and nothing much seemed to be happening. He finally stopped knocking just as she opened the door. I looked to see her dressed prettily. I couldn't help but keep staring at her. Why did it seem as if she was already planning to go somewhere or something now when nothing had even happened to indicate something like that?
He started talking with her, but I couldn't hear much of what they were saying from the distance I was. I was a little annoyed at how I seemed to be so far away and so unable to understand, but I told myself that one way or another, I would get the information sooner or later. I just kept on listening attentively, and soon enough she was moving out to meet whoever he was.
"She cheated on the alpha," I thought to myself, wondering at the prospect and the possibility of that being the reason for her strange behavior. I didn't know how possible it was, but I knew that there was a pretty good chance that it was really the case. I shook my head finally and decided against it. It just couldn't be. I didn't expect her to be like that, and most likely, she wasn't anyway.
I smiled to myself as I thought about how suspicious I was. This guy wasn't fine in terms of character, not to me, and he wasn't overly handsome either. There were a thousand other people that she could cheat with, but I didn't think that he would be among them. In that case, I should move that thought from my head and instead think of other more possible things that could be going on right here and now.
I relaxed a little, following them and started making notes and taking a couple of tips for my own self. Most likely nothing climactic would happen this night and it was simply a meeting that I needed to observe. I made up my mind that it was a good idea for me to not miss out on this but also for me to not take any action at all, simply pretending as if nothing was going on.
I laughed internally as I smiled at myself, understanding my role in this and feeling very good inside about myself. It felt nice that I seemed to be some kind of silent observer that did nothing. Even nicer when I contemplated how I would suddenly spring up with every knowledge later on and end up with someone in trouble apart from myself.
I would have continued laughing internally if not for the fact that I saw someone now, and I secretly faded away, letting him take my spot and being the one at the very last place in the line that we were following right now. "The alpha?" I questioned. "What is he doing here?"
I felt incredibly surprised to see that he was also here. It was such a secret meeting at this hour of the night. First of all, she was going, thinking that nobody else was here. And the alpha was going also, following her, thinking that she didn't know and that nobody else knew. Finally, I was here, following by their side also thinking that no one else knew. It was such a twisted thing to the extent that I looked back just in case someone else was following behind myself and I didn't know about it either. I laughed a little when I noticed that there was nothing. Well, it didn't hurt for me to be careful.
Because this was a bit surprising for me at this moment, I watched everything in the background, hardly able to hear any piece of information by myself due to how the alpha had taken my place. I told myself that it was necessary that I let him go ahead of me. He might see me. It was better I saw all of them than I risked the alpha seeing me because he was going to definitely have a lot of questions for me.
Finally, the meeting seemed to be over and I watched as everyone started leaving, first the alpha and then her, but I looked ahead of me and saw a phone on the ground. My eyes widened. The alpha had been recording himself, and now he just so happened to drop his phone. I could hardly believe my damned good luck. What were the chances? I didn't know, but I felt incredibly pleased with what had happened and how the points would end, if only I could play my cards right.
I completely walked up to it without any hesitation and picked it up. It was still opened. Wow. I didn't even need to struggle to unlock it or give it to hackers to work on it for me. It was already done. And all I needed to do was to make sure I kept it on in order to use it and access all the valuable documents here.
"I've hit the gold now," I thought to myself, laughing almost aloud but restraining myself, knowing that they were still around somewhere one way or another. I waited for everyone to be absolutely gone before I made my move. I took out my phone, calling in my confidence. This was good news I needed to share. I needed to consider the possible next course of action carefully right now before the opportunity passed us by.
