Chapter 271: Everything Will Be Alright
Serena Sinclair's POV:
The deafening sound of gunfire surrounded us as Phillip and I crouched behind a luxury sedan. What had started as a simple exit from our hotel had devolved into a scene straight out of an action movie—except the bullets were real, the danger palpable, and there was no director to yell "cut."
Griffin—the steady, methodical head of our security detail—was single-handedly holding off three attackers, but I could see his situation was desperate. His gun clicked empty and in one fluid motion, he hurled it at the nearest assailant, buying himself precious seconds.
Our security team was pinned down several yards away, engaged in their own firefight with Susan's men. No help would come from that direction.
"Nowhere left to run!" one of Susan's men called out, his face twisted in a triumphant sneer as he advanced toward our position.
My heart hammered against my ribs, but years of high-stakes legal negotiations had taught me to think clearly under pressure. I spotted a gun on the ground that had fallen from one of the wounded security personnel. Without hesitation, I snatched it up and slid it toward Griffin.
"Give you," I managed, my voice barely audible over the gunfire.
Griffin nodded gratefully, quickly checking the magazine before returning fire. For a moment, I allowed myself to believe we might make it out of this. Griffin had successfully pushed back the attackers in front of us. We just needed to reach the waiting Range Rover.
Then everything changed in an instant.
A powerful hand clamped down on my shoulder, yanking me backward with such force that I nearly lost my footing. I yelped in surprise as I was dragged from the relative safety of our cover. Another man provided covering fire, forcing Griffin to duck behind the car.
"Quick, get her in the car!" the second man shouted.
My blood turned to ice. I understood immediately—this was what Susan had planned all along. They wanted me as leverage against Phillip. I would become the weapon used to control him.
The realization crystallized into a single thought: I absolutely could not let that happen.
As my captor dragged me toward their vehicle, I twisted in his grip and sank my teeth into his arm with every ounce of strength I possessed. The metallic taste of blood filled my mouth as he howled in pain.
"Fucking bitch!" he screamed, grabbing a fistful of my hair and yanking my head back.
The pain was blinding, but I refused to release his arm. His partner turned at the commotion, creating an opening that Griffin immediately exploited. The crack of his gun was followed by the partner staggering backward, clutching his shoulder.
Griffin tried to advance toward me, but the wounded man sprayed wild gunfire in his direction, forcing him back into cover. I was still caught in a desperate struggle with my captor, the pain in my scalp excruciating as he attempted to subdue me.
Then, like an avenging angel, Phillip appeared. With mechanical precision, he dispatched the man who had been firing at Griffin, then turned his attention to the man holding me. Our eyes met briefly, and I saw a coldness there I'd never witnessed before.
Without hesitation, Phillip fired. The bullet struck my captor directly in the face. Warm blood splattered across my cheek as his grip on my hair suddenly loosened. I stumbled forward, momentarily paralyzed by shock.
"Serena, are you alright?" Phillip asked, moving toward me.
I couldn't respond. My body trembled uncontrollably as the reality of what had just occurred washed over me. But even in my shock-induced haze, movement behind Phillip caught my eye.
Susan, her elegant features twisted with hatred, raised her gun and aimed directly at Phillip's back.
"Look out!" I screamed, lunging forward.
In that split second, I saw calculation flash across Susan's face. She could have fired immediately, could have struck Phillip before he turned. But I realized with perfect clarity: she couldn't risk killing Phillip. The retribution from his family would be swift and absolute.
But me? I was expendable.
As Phillip began to turn, I threw myself against him, using my body as a shield. Susan adjusted her aim and fired.
The impact felt like being struck by a sledgehammer. My entire body went numb almost instantly, and I felt myself collapsing against Phillip.
"Serena!" he cried, catching me as I fell.
Rage transformed his features as he fired at Susan, who ducked back through the hotel's shattered entrance. Glass exploded as his bullets struck the doorframe.
Griffin appeared with two handguns, providing covering fire as Phillip lifted me into his arms.
"I'll cover you—get her to the car!" Griffin shouted.
The world tilted and swayed as Phillip carried me. A warm wetness spread across my back, and each heartbeat sent waves of pain radiating from the wound. I was vaguely aware of being placed in the vehicle, of Phillip's tense profile as he drove, of his hand gripping mine with desperate strength.
Through the haze of pain, I glimpsed Susan's car pursuing us, then Griffin and the security team intercepting her. Words drifted to me through Phillip's phone: "I'll handle her," Griffin's voice promised.
Every bump in the road sent fresh agony through my body. The back of my blouse was soaked with blood—my blood. Despite everything, my main concern was for Phillip. I'd willingly taken a bullet for him, and I'd do it again without hesitation.
We arrived at what appeared to be an apartment. Phillip punched in a code, then carefully carried me inside, placing me on a sofa. When he pulled his hands away, they were stained crimson.
"Serena..." His voice cracked, something I'd never heard before.
"I'm... fine..." I managed, though my lips felt numb and uncooperative.
"Don't worry, Griffin is bringing a doctor," he assured me, his usual composure shattered.
"Are you... okay?" I whispered.
"I'm fine, don't worry about me."
Those words gave me the only comfort I could find as darkness began to encroach on my vision. The entire situation felt surreal—gunfights, kidnapping attempts, taking a bullet... this wasn't supposed to be my life. I was a lawyer, not an action hero.
The door opened, and Griffin rushed in with a doctor who immediately began examining my wound.
"Phillip..." I called weakly.
"I'm here," he responded instantly, moving to my side.
"I'll remove the bullet and stop the bleeding," the doctor explained, "but she'll need hospital scans later to check for internal damage."
Phillip carefully carried me to a bedroom, positioning me face-down on the mattress. The doctor injected something that dulled the pain, and I drifted in and out of consciousness during the procedure. Through it all, Phillip never released my hand, his palm slick with nervous sweat.
Thirty minutes later, the doctor finished stitching and bandaging my wound.
"Keep the wound dry, don't let her lie on it, and make sure she takes these antibiotics to prevent infection," he instructed.
"Will she be alright?" Phillip's voice was tight with concern.
"Based on my experience, this wound isn't life-threatening, but gunshot injuries require close monitoring. Any unusual symptoms, get her to a hospital immediately."
Griffin escorted the doctor out while Phillip gently stroked my face. When Griffin returned, Phillip stood.
"Let's talk outside," he said, his voice eerily calm.
"Of course," Griffin replied.
