Chapter 172: Threaten Her
This file was extremely important to Amelia. She had been busy running around for it during the past period.
She just hadn't expected something to go wrong with this project at the last minute.
Amelia turned to look at her assistant Hannah beside her.
"When did this happen?"
"Fifteen minutes ago, someone from downstairs handed this file up. I rushed over immediately to tell you."
Hannah's expression was equally grave.
This confidential document had always been kept by Amelia in the company's internal safe.
Logically, no one should have been able to access it.
But now what Hannah had given Amelia was clearly a photocopy of that document, and this copy was already circulating outside. Once it became widely known, the program the company had been developing would be completely ruined.
"Has anyone entered my office?"
Amelia began checking, immediately pulling up the surveillance footage of her office.
However, no one had entered the office without Amelia's permission all this time.
So how had this document been leaked?
Wait—Amelia suddenly remembered.
Some time ago, she had taken this file to show her hospitalized father. She'd wanted him to review what she'd accomplished at the company.
Could it be...
Had the leak happened then?
"Ms. Wilson, the person who obtained this document says they want to meet you. They said they have something to tell you."
At these words, Amelia's head snapped up.
"Who is this person?"
"We don't know yet, but they sent me an address and said you should come quickly."
Hannah's expression was serious.
To protect the confidential file she'd worked so hard to develop, Amelia rushed to the address the moment she saw it.
At the same time, Amelia was guessing who could have obtained this confidential document.
But she never expected it would be Clara!
When she arrived at the restaurant, Amelia strode inside. Clara was already sitting by the window.
Seeing Amelia, Clara waved her hand, gesturing for Amelia to sit on the sofa across from her.
"Would you like something to drink? My treat." Clara elegantly pulled out a menu and handed it to Amelia.
Amelia dismissed it with disdain. "How did you get this document?"
That was all she urgently wanted to know.
Clara propped her hands on the table, resting her chin on them, smiling sweetly. "Right now, you're the one asking me for something. You should be polite, not interrogating me like this."
Amelia didn't want to waste time with Clara. Suppressing her anger, she said, "Do you know what you're doing is illegal?"
Clara shrugged, laughing brazenly. "Of course I know what I'm doing is illegal. But I'm part of the Lowe family. If this matter becomes public, it would look terrible for William, wouldn't it? And aren't you William's fiancée? How could you possibly use me to harm your own fiancé?"
Amelia couldn't help but draw in a sharp breath.
She had really underestimated this girl.
She'd thought Clara was merely naive and childish, only capable of obvious schemes.
She hadn't expected her to have become so calculating.
Seeing Amelia's silence, Clara smiled triumphantly.
"If something happens to me, the entire Lowe family will be implicated. And your confidential document is in my hands right now. Amelia, I hold all the cards."
Clara looked at Amelia with a challenging gaze and said slowly, "My demand is simple. As long as you leave William, I'll return this confidential document to you."
Amelia instinctively clenched her fists, her nails digging deep into her palms. The burning pain reminded her to stay calm.
She quickly analyzed the current situation.
If Clara had always been this shrewd and calculating, then from the very beginning when they'd opposed each other, all her actions should have been purposeful.
Rather than improvising schemes that Amelia could easily counter and that left her frustrated.
So one thing was certain—someone must be manipulating Clara from behind the scenes.
"Wilson Corporation and Lowe Corporation are currently in a marriage alliance. If something happens to my family, do you think William will just stand by? Right now, both companies rise and fall together. What you're doing is also harming William!"
Amelia spoke slowly, trying to reason with Clara.
But Clara slammed the table and stood up, her emotions running high. "He shouldn't have had anything to do with you in the first place! The one who should marry him is me! You barged in out of nowhere, invaded our world, and stole my William away!"
Clara pointed at Amelia, full of resentment, accusing her repeatedly. "You have no idea how much I love him! Since childhood, my only dream has been to marry him! You stole him from me, shamelessly tore us apart, and destroyed the love I've always longed for!"
Under normal circumstances, Amelia really couldn't be bothered arguing with Clara.
She was blinded by love, and whoever was behind her was clearly exploiting exactly that.
Amelia took a deep breath. "Clara, I know you've never liked me. But one thing is one thing. You're now threatening me with a confidential document, which is already illegal. Even if I don't agree to your demands, once I file charges against you, do you think the Lowe family can protect you? Maybe they'll do everything they can to save you, but they love you so much—can you bear to drag them down with you?"
Clara paused slightly.
When she'd agreed to do this for that person, she hadn't considered this point.
She'd been single-mindedly focused on taking back what she'd lost.
She hadn't even thought about the consequences.
Seeing Clara waver, Amelia breathed a slight sigh of relief and continued. "Wilson Corporation's document is worth hundreds of millions. By threatening me with this document, you've already committed a crime. Even if I agree and leave William, if Wilson Corporation presses charges afterward, even though you're just an accomplice, do you think you can escape prison? When that happens, will you still be worthy of standing beside the William you love?"
Clara's arrogant demeanor crumbled bit by bit. She instinctively clutched her skirt, her lips trembling continuously.
Amelia took a deep breath. "The person who got you to do this is just using your naivety. Tell me—who is this person?"
Clara bit her lip and looked up, still appearing unwilling.
"If I tell you, will you leave William?"
Weighing her options, Amelia nodded.
