Chapter 199: Concealing from Samuel

Freya's eyes flickered with surprise, but she quickly pulled herself together.

Her voice was calm, yet firm. "The Barnett family's info should be spot on. But during their chaos, Miss Montague's fate wasn't really their concern, so it might've slipped through the cracks."

Hearing this, Jennifer got even angrier.

"So you're saying I deserved to get the fake info?"

Freya immediately softened her tone. "That's not what I meant, Miss Lawson. Just remember, over the years, you've gotten a lot of good intel from the Barnetts. A few mistakes are bound to happen."

Seeing Jennifer about to argue again, Freya placed all the documents on the table. "Since you're not in the mood for business right now, I'll leave these here. When you're ready to handle them, give me a call."

With that, Freya turned and walked out without looking back, completely ignoring Jennifer.

"Just Samuel's assistant, and she thinks she can talk to me like that," Jennifer fumed, clenching her fists but forcing herself to stay calm.

Meanwhile, Freya got into the car. The others who had come with her noticed her serious expression and asked cautiously. "Miss Lawson didn't give us the report. If Mr. Barnett ask..."

"If he ask, it's not your problem," Freya cut them off.

Freya was Samuel's secretary, the only one who could speak directly to him. The others had no real standing with Samuel. Only Freya had that privilege.

She added, "Whatever you heard at the Lawson place, keep it to yourself, especially from Mr. Barnett. Got it?"

"This..."

Hiding something from Samuel was risky. These people had worked for him long enough to know the rules.

Seeing their worried faces, Freya's voice remained calm. "Don't worry, nothing will happen. If it does, I'll handle it. It's not your concern. Besides, the company is at a critical stage right now. Shadow hasn't fully transferred power to anyone yet. It's best to keep Mr. Barnett focused."

Since Freya was willing to take the heat, the subordinates quickly agreed.

Freya's eyes flashed with a sharp light, mixed with inexplicable pain. Why did the person who disappeared years ago reappear now?

Freya had been hospitalized for half a month back then. The only person she saw was Alfred.

After being discharged, Freya rarely went to Samuel's villa. Later, she learned that Gabriella had been living with Samuel, until she chose to end her life out of longing for Alfred.

Gabriella wasn't afraid of death back then, so why did she come back now?

Freya's heart was conflicted, but she quickly made up her mind.

That night, Freya brought the feedback from the Lawson family back to Samuel.

Having just resolved a project issue, Samuel looked exhausted, pressing his temple lightly as if it was the only way to feel a bit better.

Seeing Freya, Samuel's expression remained serious. "Why is the feedback from the Lawson family so slow this time? What are they doing?"

Usually, it arrived in the afternoon, but today it was delayed by several hours.

Freya remained calm, placing the documents on the table. "Miss Lawson had some issues, so it was delayed. The documents were just sent over, and I've checked them. There's no problem."

Freya pushed the documents towards Samuel. "If you're not confident, you can check them yourself."

Samuel simply raised his hand slightly. "No need. You've checked them. What more do I need to check?"

Freya felt a warmth in her heart at Samuel's words.

Having been by Samuel's side for so long, Freya knew exactly what kind of person he was.

But ever since Shadow sent her to Samuel at a young age, Freya had developed special feelings for him.

Was it admiration? Or had she come to see him as family?

Freya couldn't say for sure.

But the feeling was definitely different from what she felt for Alfred.

Sometimes, just being by Samuel's side was enough for Freya, and she didn't dare to hope for anything more.

As Freya was lost in these subtle feelings, Samuel suddenly looked up. "By the way."

His sharp eyes fixed on Freya. "How long has it been since you had a one-on-one with Alfred?"

Freya was taken aback by Samuel's question. "You mean..."

Samuel didn't hide his intentions, directly meeting Freya's eyes. "You grew up together. There should be some feelings between you. Since Alfred joined the company two years ago, your interactions have decreased."

Samuel leaned forward, closing the distance between them.

His deep eyes seemed to emit a dangerous light, making it impossible to escape. "Is it because Alfred is in the company now, and you're reassured, or is it..."

Samuel's words made Freya uneasy, and she quickly lowered her head, her attitude more cautious than before. "Mr. Barnett, you're joking. How could I have other thoughts? Since I started following you, I've been dedicated to serving you, never..."

Before she could finish, Samuel laughed and gently stroked her cheek. "I didn't say anything else. Why are you so nervous?"

Freya's heart was still racing.

Samuel's voice came again. "I just wanted to remind you to visit Alfred when you get the chance."

His eyes turned cold. "And help me find out what he's up to. He recently got a new girlfriend, right? Start from there."
