Chapter 66: The Aftermath

We drove back to the hostel in silence with the weight of Elara's words pressing down on all of us, and Jenna kept her eyes fixed on the road ahead while her knuckles stayed white around the steering wheel. Kael stared out the window with his jaw tight and his cast resting on his knee, and Mira and Zoe held hands in the back seat with Mira's thumb tracing slow circles on Zoe's palm like she was trying to ground herself.

I sat in the passenger seat with the crushed note still in my fist, the red ink bleeding into my palm, and Dorian leaned forward from the back with his hand on my shoulder. "We'll find out who did this to them."

I didn't turn around to face him. "We already know who did it."

Verina had given us more details before we left, a list of names and a location and a timeline, and she'd told us that Elara's people had been ambushed at their safe house north of the city. The attackers had been fast and professional with no witnesses and no survivors, and that kind of precision didn't come from random hunters.

Jenna broke the silence first, her voice flat. "The hunters?"

I shook my head. "The council, someone who didn't want Elara talking to us."

Kael's voice came from the back, sharp and hard. "Verina?"

"Maybe her, maybe someone else." I finally turned to face them. "Elara's people were taken out because of her connection to us, because we met with her. We're being sent a message."

Dorian's hand tightened on my shoulder. "Then we send one back to them."

The hostel felt different when we arrived, quiet in a way that wasn't peaceful, like the building itself was holding its breath and waiting for something to happen. We filed inside and checked every room and every corner and every locked door, but no one else was there and there were no signs of forced entry, just the heavy silence pressing down on all of us.

Zoe and Mira went upstairs to check the bedrooms while Jenna and Kael took the basement, and Dorian stood by the front door with his hand on his rod, watching the street through the window.

I went to the kitchen and poured a glass of water with my hands still shaking, and the note sat on the counter with the red ink stark against the white paper. You can't save everyone, Arya. I pressed my palms against the edge of the counter and closed my eyes, feeling the ring on my finger warm and heavy, the weight of everything I'd signed up for pressing down on my chest like a physical thing.

Dorian appeared in the doorway, his voice low. "Are you okay?"

I turned to face him. "No, but I will be eventually."

He crossed the kitchen and wrapped his arms around me with his chin resting on my head. "We'll figure out who did this, Arya."

I leaned into him and let myself feel the warmth of his body. "I know we will."

He pulled back to look at my face. "We'll make them pay for it."

I held his gaze. "I don't want revenge right now, I want answers. I want to know who we can trust and who's been playing us this whole time."

He nodded slowly. "Then we find out."

Jenna appeared in the doorway with her expression grim. "Kael found something in the basement, something you need to see."

I followed her down the stairs with my footsteps echoing on the concrete, and Kael was standing near the far wall with his knife in his hand, pointing at something carved into the brick. You're next. The letters were deep and fresh, the edges still sharp and raw.

Mira's voice came from behind me, tight and controlled. "They've been here, they were here while we were gone."

Zoe moved to stand beside her. "We need to leave, right now, we need to get out of this building."

I looked at the words carved into the brick, at the cold certainty of the threat, and I felt something settle in my chest. "No, we stay."

Kael turned to me with his eyes sharp. "Arya, they know where we live, they know where to find us."

I met his eyes and let him see my answer. "Good, let them come, let them try."

The room went quiet around me, everyone watching and waiting for my next move. "We've been running for months and I'm done with it." I turned to face all of them. "We set traps and we fortify the doors and we make this place a fortress, and when they come for us, we make sure they don't leave."

Jenna nodded slowly. "I know how to set proper wards, I can get started tonight."

Mira stepped forward with her chin lifted. "I can help with the salt lines and the iron placements."

Dorian moved to stand beside me with his shoulder brushing mine. "What do you need from us?"

I looked at him. "I need everyone to trust me."

He didn't hesitate. "They already do."

I took a breath and turned to face the group. "We don't run anymore, we fight, together."

The room was silent for a long moment. Then Kael spoke, his voice rough. "Finally."

I felt something shift in the room, a new energy that hadn't been there before. We weren't just surviving anymore, we were choosing to stand our ground.

\---

The next few hours were a blur of salt lines and iron spikes and wards carved into the doorframes, and Vance worked with the grimoire while his voice stayed low and his hands stayed steady. Jenna reinforced the windows with blessed iron bars, and Mira and Zoe swept the building floor by floor, checking every room and every closet and every hidden corner.

Kael found me in the living room with his cast braced against his chest. "We need to talk, Arya."

I sat down on the couch and waited.

He sat across from me and rubbed his face with his good hand. "About what happens after we survive tonight, assuming we actually do survive it."

I waited for him to continue.

"I'm not going to pretend I know what comes next for any of us, but I know I'm in, whatever it is." He looked at me. "I've got nowhere else to go, and I'm tired of running."

I looked at him, at the tired lines around his eyes and the set of his jaw. "You don't have to stay, Kael. You could walk away, disappear, start fresh somewhere else."

He shook his head slowly. "I've been running my whole life and I'm tired of it." He held my gaze. "You gave me a reason to stop."

I didn't know what to say to that, so I just nodded.

Dorian appeared in the doorway with his rod in his hand. "We're ready, everything is in place."

I stood up and walked toward the front door, the traps set and the weapons ready and the wards in place. We had done everything we could, and now we just had to wait.

Dorian stood beside me with his hand on my back. "We're going to make it through this, Arya."

I looked at him, at the trust in his eyes. "I know we will."

The snow started falling again outside, soft and silent, and we waited together.
