Chapter 269
Only then did Lila snap back to reality. Looking at the handsome face so close to hers, she suddenly felt a bit scared to meet his eyes, because his gaze was too captivating;one careless moment and she'd be lost in it
She didn't know when it started, but she was no longer as rational as she had been when they first got their marriage certificate.
So it was true, living together really could lead to developing feelings?
After spending so much time with Alexander, seeing so many excellent qualities in him, plus a countenance that was impossible to resent her affection for him really had been building up gradually.
Especially since he hadn't mocked or ridiculed her in quite a while.
After coming back to her senses,Lila lowered her eyes and said, 'I wasn't thinking about anything"
Alexander watched as she didn't even dare to look at him, which gave him even more reason to suspect she had something on her mind!
Without hesitation, he lifted her chin and stared straight at her, chuckling softly, "If it's nothing, why do you look so wronged? All the servants in the house are watching—they'll think I've been bullying you."
Lila thought for a moment, then finally gritted her teeth and spoke, "I was thinking... you didn't answer my question earlier."
"What question?"
"Is it really like Arabella said—that if your ex-girlfriend comes back, with just one word from her, you'd divorce me even if I were pregnant?"
Alexander's eyes darkened, and he said nothing.
Lila knew this meant yes.
Her mood suddenly soured. She pushed him away, "Let go of me. Let's go home."
Alexander pressed her back against the car, grabbed her wrist, and his large hand lingered, enveloping her delicate, supple handWhile tracing her fingers, he spoke with a half-smile, "Mrs. Sinclair, didn't you say that hypothetical questions yield hypothetical answers with no pratical value? If you really want to know, why not get pregnant with my child first? Then we'll see whether I'll divorce you when Celeste comes back, right?"
Lila looked at him, hesitated for a few seconds, then said, "But I'm scared."
"Scared of what?"
"Scared that if I really get pregnant, you'll divorce me because of someone else's words."
Hearing this, Alexander's gaze gradually became complicated.
Lila's voice continued, "How helpless would I be? I'm only 22, I haven't even gotten my teaching certificate yet. Pregnant and kicked out. I wouldn't even have the means to support a child. How would I survive?"
As she said this, there was grievance in her voice.
Alexander frowned at her words.
After a moment, he lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly. His deep eyes fixed on her as he coaxed in a low voice, "Don't overthink it. My wife and child won't end up that miserable. I promise, no matter what happens between us in the future, I won't let you go hungry or homeless."
"I'm not really your wife yet."
"You will be."
Lila didn't understand where his confidence came from.
Why was he always so confident?
She frowned.
Suddenly, a gentle kiss landed on her forehead.
She was slightly stunned, "Why are you kissing me?"
"Silly girl."
"What's silly about me?"
A low chuckle escaped from Alexander's throat, "You look silly. If you were smart, you would have found a chance to climb into my bed long ago and secured your position as Mrs. Sinclair. Only a silly girl like you would honestly sleep in separate rooms with me every night."
Lila pressed her lips together, "That was the rule you set."
"The rules no longer matter, but you are here."
"I have enough self-respect not to climb into a man's bed"
He gave a soft snort, and his large hand suddenly slipped around Lila's waist, pulling her into his arms.
Lila stumbled before steadying herself, looking nervously at Alexander who was so close, "What are you doing?"
