Chapter 59: Zara Looks for a Job

Emily's POV

I felt dizzy and sensed a stomachache. Looking down, I realized my period had started.

These troublemakers never give me a break. They're driving me crazy.

"What's it about this time?"

"I heard my guy and Warren's guy got into an argument over an easy position. My guy handles vehicle placement, Warren's does loading. He thinks it's unfair that they get the same pay when his work is so much harder, and he said something about discrimination."

"Then they started arguing. Warren's guy saw his man losing ground, so he called in others. Gradually more people joined in, and it escalated to this."

I was about to rush over to handle it, but then my eyes lit up with an idea.

"Here, I'll give you a number. Have her deal with it. She's new here, specifically in charge of managing company employees."

"Ms. Johnson, I'm afraid the new person won't be able to control the situation."

"It's fine, let her try first. If she can't handle it, call me then."

"Alright, got it."

Thinking about Mira struggling later actually improved my mood.

Let's see how you deal with this, since you want to go against me.

I got up, washed up, quickly put on some lipstick and headed to the factory to watch how Mira would handle it.

I usually don't wear makeup during my period, but my lips look too pale without anything, so I always put on lipstick.

My dorm is on the sixth floor. Just as I came down the stairs, I saw Joshua coming out of the washroom.

"Emily, how come you're going out without makeup today?"

"Don't I look good?" I glared at him.

"Good, of course you look good. This is my first time seeing you without makeup, my heart's racing."

He's such a smooth talker, but having such a big brother figure is actually nice.

"Only vampires don't have heartbeats. Alright, come with me after you wash up. The workers are causing trouble at the factory again, we need to deal with it."

"Sure thing, coming right up."

We walked in slowly. The crowd stirred a bit, and people in front moved aside, making way for me. I heard people muttering behind me—

"Make way, Ms. Johnson is here. Once she arrives, this will definitely get resolved."

"Yeah, Ms. Johnson solved our salary and work issues right after she arrived. She's capable. Following her, we have a bright future."

Hearing them say this made me really happy. At least I've earned a good reputation.

Getting closer, I saw Mira still trying to communicate. "Alright, we're all colleagues, everyone stop fighting."

"Why should we stop? Why should my work be so exhausting when we get the same pay? This is discrimination, blatant discrimination!"

Mira's face turned red with anxiety. "Alright, stop arguing, what's there to fight over about a lousy job?"

"Lousy job? What did you say?"

Nicholas's guy couldn't help but roar: "This job lets me support my family, gives them a roof over their heads so they won't be homeless, and in your mouth, it becomes a lousy job."

"Exactly! We're all working so hard to survive, how dare you insult our work!"

The crowd was getting agitated, with a sense of mob anger building up.

Mira's voice stopped abruptly. I saw her face turn pale, her eyes drifting toward me and pausing on my face for two seconds. I couldn't read what that look meant, but the anger in the surrounding crowd hadn't dissipated. Some things, whether I liked it or not, still needed me to handle.

"Alright, everyone quiet down."

The crowd stirred.

Someone shouted: "Quick, Ms. Johnson is here."

"Hello, Ms. Johnson."

"Ms. Johnson, it was Warren's people who started it."

Listening to the chatter in the crowd, I just raised my hand slightly, and everyone fell silent.

"Nicholas, Warren, get out here."

The two quickly emerged from the crowd.

I looked at them both and said coldly, "I told you to lead your teams. Is this how you lead? Can you do the job or not?"

Both were too scared to breathe heavily. "We can, we can."

"This time, you're both fined fifty dollars each. If anyone under you causes trouble in my factory again, you're both out!"

Neither dared to object and had to smile and promise to do better.

I nodded, grabbed Mira's arm to leave, when Warren came up to me saying he had something to tell me, so I took him aside.

Behind me, Nicholas's angry voice cursed: "Damn it, if any of you cause trouble for me again, don't blame me for being harsh. This fine, you're paying it."

"Why should I?"

"If you can't handle it, get lost. Because I said so."

Listening to the scolding behind me, I looked at Warren. "What is it?"

Warren looked around and lowered his voice: "Emily, let me tell you, this incident didn't happen for no reason. It's most likely Samuel's idea."

I raised an eyebrow, piecing together the whole story in my mind.

I promoted Warren, and Samuel went from a management position to a regular employee—if he had indeed been profiting from his position before, this move basically cut off his income stream. Could he swallow this anger?

Of course, I had no proof, but the more I thought about it, the more certain I felt about the direction.

Warren shook his head. "Emily, don't worry, I'll definitely find evidence that he's causing trouble."

"Also, Emily, there's something I'd like your help with, if you could..."

"What is it?" I asked casually, thinking that since I promoted him, giving him some privileges would make him more obedient.

"Emily, I have a sister who's a designer, a really good one. She used to work at a listed company in Silverlight City, but the company went bankrupt recently and she hasn't found a new job yet. Could you..."

I felt all the hair on my body stand up.

Silverlight City, big company, bankruptcy.

His last name is Jenkins!

I should have thought of it, but because he and Zara don't look alike, I overlooked this.

I probed calmly: "Your sister? How old is she, what's her name? Does she have credentials?"

"Emily, my sister is 28, her name is Zara Jenkins, and yes, she has credentials. What do you think?"

Looking at him rubbing his hands with a flattering expression, I sneered inwardly.

Zara, I thought we'd have no connection in this life, and I was ready to let you go.

But who would have thought, fate is truly magical. I ran all the way to Luminous City, and you still managed to follow.

Fine, very good.

In that case, let's see how I play with you!

I'll make your brother work for me and ruin your reputation. Just you wait!

I patted his shoulder. "No problem, after all, I'm the one who promoted you. It's only right that I help find your sister a job."

I'll have her join my company, make her work right under the workers' noses. I'm in the shadows, she's in the light. I've already planned it out—what I want, she'll hand over herself.

"How about this, have your sister come to the company tomorrow and go through the onboarding process directly. The steel factory's new product needs promotional materials, let her handle that. Oh, and," I paused, lowering my voice, "I go by Ophelia now. Tell the workers there's a new woman trying to take Ophelia's position, and you need to keep an eye out for me."

Warren immediately got excited: "Yes, Ophelia, don't worry. I'll definitely perform well."

My mind raced, planning to tell Christopher and the others that from now on I'm called Ophelia, and they need to be careful.

The workers don't know my name anyway.

Zara, I've put in so much effort for you. You better perform well and not disappoint me.
