Chapter 248: New Beginning
Diana POV
The door to my hospital room opened slowly, and my heart swelled as a doctor entered, followed by Bradley, who was looking down at a tiny bundle cradled awkwardly in his arms. My husband's face was a peculiar mixture of terror and awe.
"Someone wants to meet her mommy," the doctor announced with a warm smile.
Bradley approached my bedside with careful steps, as if carrying the most fragile treasure in the world. When he gently transferred our daughter into my waiting arms, I felt tears spring to my eyes. She was so tiny, yet so adorable.
"She's beautiful," I whispered, lightly tracing my finger along her soft cheek. She had Bradley's strong chin, and something about her eyebrows reminded me of him, too. Her skin was still red and wrinkled from her dramatic early entrance into the world.
"The nurses have gone through all the early care information," the doctor explained, checking my vitals as he spoke. "She's small but strong—just like her mother."
I nodded, barely hearing him. I was lost in memories of Jacob and Joanne as newborns—how fragile yet resilient they had been. This little one was even smaller, but I could feel the same vibrant life energy pulsing through her tiny form.
"What do you think?" I asked, looking up at Bradley.
He was standing stiffly beside the bed, his gaze fixed on me rather than our daughter. "She looks..." he hesitated, finally glancing down at the baby, "...wrinkly."
I laughed softly. "They all do at first. Look at her eyebrows. They have your exact line."
Bradley leaned closer, studying her with intense focus. I could see the moment his expression softened when our daughter transformed from an abstract concept to a real person in his mind.
A gentle knock interrupted us, and Martha peeked in, her eyes immediately filling with tears. "May we come in?"
Soon my room was filled with family—Martha, Steven and Paula, my parents, Katie and Marilla. They gathered around my bed, exclaiming over the baby and asking how I was feeling.
I noticed Steven examining the baby's features intently before catching my eye with a meaningful look. We both knew he was searching for Sullivan family traits. Martha stood beside Bradley, squeezing his hand as she gazed at the baby.
"At last," she whispered to him, "a family complete."
Something flickered in Bradley's eyes—vulnerability, joy, perhaps a touch of fear.
The door opened again, and Suzanne entered with Jacob and Joanne. They approached the bed cautiously, eyes wide.
"Does it hurt, Mom?" Jacob asked, his small face serious with concern.
"Not anymore, sweetheart," I assured him, though my body ached in ways I'd forgotten about.
Bradley placed a hand on Jacob's shoulder. "We have three princesses in our house now."
Jacob straightened his spine. "I'm the man. I'll protect all my sisters. Mommy, too."
Joanne, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, finally spoke up. "Can I design clothes for her?"
"Of course you can," I laughed.
"I want to be her godmother," Paula announced, only to be immediately challenged by Katie and Marilla who made the same claim.
"You can all be her godmothers," I told them, smiling at their enthusiasm. "Though with so many of you spoiling her, I worry she'll really become a princess."
"What's her name?" Joanne asked, gently touching her sister's tiny fingers.
Bradley and I exchanged glances. We'd discussed several options but hadn't settled on anything definitive.
"Joy?" Martha suggested.
"Jade?" offered my mother.
Bradley cleared his throat. "I was thinking... maybe Grace? For her middle name at least."
I looked up at him, surprised. "Grace?"
"Because you brought grace into all our lives," he said quietly. "You've given us all a second chance."
Tears welled in my eyes again. After everything we'd been through—my blindness, his coma, the threats against our family—we had somehow arrived here, in this moment of perfect peace.
"Grace," I repeated, looking down at our daughter. "It's perfect."
Suddenly, there was a thud beside me. Bradley had collapsed onto the floor.
"Bradley!" I cried as everyone rushed toward him.
The medical team hurried in, quickly checking his vitals and helping him onto a chair. He came around almost immediately, looking embarrassed.
"I'm fine," he insisted, though his face was ashen.
The doctor examined him briefly. "Just stress and exhaustion catching up with you, Mr. Booth. You've had quite an ordeal these past twenty-four hours."
When the excitement calmed, and most of our visitors had been shooed away by the nurses, Bradley sat beside my bed, holding my hand.
"What happened at the factory?" I asked quietly, suddenly remembering the chaos we'd left behind. "Is everything...taken care of?"
Bradley nodded. "Parker handled it all. The police have been informed about Colin's heroism and Anne's... actions." He rubbed his temples. "I'll need to speak with Charles and Queen Elizabeth about what happened. Not a conversation I'm looking forward to."
"Will there be legal problems?" I worried.
"Nothing we can't manage," he assured me, then gave a humorless laugh. "Though I might have to answer for all the traffic laws I broke getting to the hospital. Apparently, I caused quite a scene cutting through intersections and running lights."
"What?" Now it's me giving the humorless laugh.
"I was so afraid I'd lose you," he admitted.
"You can't get rid of me that easily," I said, squeezing his fingers.
The doctor returned later with test results and recommendations. After reviewing my medical history and the complications with this birth, he strongly advised against future pregnancies.
"Your body has been through a lot, Mrs. Booth. Another pregnancy could pose significant risks."
After he left, Bradley and I looked at each other and somehow found ourselves laughing.
"I've carried two pregnancies," I said, keeping my voice low so as not to wake Grace, who was sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside my bed. "During the first one, you developed prenatal anxiety. For this one, you actually fainted. I'm not sure you could survive a third."
Bradley's smile was tender as he leaned over to kiss my forehead. "We have our perfect family. You, me, Jacob, Joanne, and now Grace. What more could we possibly need?"
As I drifted toward sleep, cradled in the warmth of my husband's gaze, I knew he was right. After all our struggles, we had finally found our happy ending. Or rather, our new beginning.
The End.
