Chapter 436 So It Was You
Chapter 436 So It Was You
Even though Dylan had been dealt with, Ruby still felt uneasy. On one hand, the perfumer and Virgil were still missing, and on the other, there was Aiden.
If Aiden had really made a will, her seemingly fragile but actually quite cunning Aunt Samantha would have leverage over her, making things difficult.
"Mom, you're the only one who can handle this," Ruby pleaded, squatting in front of Ava. "Aunt Samantha always listens to you. You need to make her get Uncle Aiden to hand over his power and shares. Otherwise, I won't be able to secure my position in the company."
"Aiden wants to make a will?" Ava asked after a moment of thought.
"Yeah."
"He's trying to guard against us," Ava paused, thinking. "How was Aiden's health the last time you visited?"
"Not good. He had to be resuscitated, but unfortunately, he pulled through," Ruby recalled, feeling a pang of regret. If only he had died then, she wouldn't be so troubled now.
"Ruby, don't you think you made a mistake?"
"What?"
Ava gently touched her head. "First, since Aiden's health is so poor, you should have ensured he was well cared for and not disturbed by anyone, especially not the board members. Second, Samantha's health has always been fragile. She should be resting more, not exhausting herself taking care of Aiden. That should be left to a nurse."
Ruby listened quietly, sensing there was more to come. "And the third?"
"The third..." Ava paused, withdrawing her hand and slowly standing up. "Alex has been missing for days. Since it's clear something happened to him, there's no point in keeping it a secret. We should announce it to the company and the public, and give Alex a proper funeral. This would also fulfill Aiden and Samantha's wishes."
Ruby nodded repeatedly, impressed. "Mom, you're right! You're brilliant!"
Once Alex's death was announced, Aiden and Samantha wouldn't be able to hold on any longer. For Aiden, it would be a devastating blow, possibly fatal.
As for the first two points, she should have had the hospital under control to prevent any loopholes.
"Mom, I'll take care of it right away!" Ruby stood up, eager to head to the hospital.
"Wait!" Ava said, "I'll go with you."
Having played this game with Samantha for years, she couldn't miss seeing it through personally.
In a dark, musty room, the damp air made everything uncomfortable. Strange insect noises could be heard faintly.
Virgil groggily opened his eyes, finding the light still dim and the air cold. The chill was unsettling and frightening.
Looking around, Virgil had no idea where he was. "Help! Is anyone there? Help!"
His voice echoed in the room, but there was no response from outside. Even his own voice seemed weaker than expected.
He had no strength, his hands and feet were tied, and the room was empty. It felt like he was the only thing in it.
"Help." Exhausted and starving, Virgil had no idea how many times he had called out. His mouth was dry, his throat parched. Leaning against the wall, he had no energy left to shout. Just then, the door creaked open.
The sound of the iron door was sharp and grating, and the footsteps on the floor sounded like a death march, making his heart race.
Lifting his tired eyes, Virgil saw someone carrying a tray, walking in unhurriedly.
A tall shadow, face obscured, but for some reason, Virgil felt the person was smiling, a smile that filled him with fear.
"Who are you?" he asked hesitantly, instinctively retreating.
But with no room to move, his back against the wall, Virgil's eyes were filled with panic.
"What, Mr. Redwood, you don't recognize me?" The person stood over him, looking down as if at prey, a cold smile on his lips, eyes icy.
"It's you?" Seeing the face, Virgil's eyes widened in shock.
He tried to sit up straight, but his weak body protested, pulling at his injuries and causing him to grimace in pain. "It's you! Why did you kidnap me? Is it money you want? Do you believe my father won't have you killed?"
He cursed angrily, but the man remained unmoved, not a trace of fear.
The man chuckled, a mocking smile on his lips. "I don't believe it!"
He slowly squatted down.
As he moved, the faint light revealed his face—Liam.
"You..."
"Mr. Redwood, do you not understand your situation? Do you remember what your circumstances were before you ended up here?" he prompted kindly.
Virgil paused, a moment of confusion.
Thinking back, because of the perfume scandal, he was a pariah, unable to show his face in public. Ruby was about to take over the entire Redwood family business, leaving him a complete failure.
"It's you!" Realizing this, he pointed at Liam. "You set this all up! The perfume project, the perfumer, the model, it was all you! Why are you doing this to me? Who's behind this? Is it that bitch Ruby? What do you want?"
Liam, squatting there, rested his chin on his hand and laughed. "Mr. Redwood, you're overthinking it! Do you think I have such a deep grudge against you to set up such an elaborate trap?"
Virgil was momentarily speechless, thinking. "So, it was all Ruby?"
"You two are half-siblings, after all. You took everything from her. What did she have? Think about it," Liam said, looking at him like he was a fool.
A naive child, untested by the harsh realities of life.
"I always knew that bitch wouldn't stay quiet, but I didn't expect her to be so ruthless, setting such a big trap for me! So, the project was a trap from the start, just waiting for me to fall into it?"
Virgil had been excited, thinking he had secured a great deal, not realizing it was a trap all along.
