Chapter 65: 65
"I'm sorry to say I won't leave until you answer me," he put his hands in his pants' pockets.
"Do as you please," she said before turning around and bending down to pick up her pets. She faced him when she stood back up. "How can you be like this? How can you ask me why I left the party without telling you when you and I don't have anything in common? When I say nothing, I mean we don't feel anything for each other."
"Let me remind you that we are married, and as long as we are..."
"You don't rule over me!" she shouted, interrupting him. "I'm not one of those women who let themselves be bossed around by their husbands or the man they're with. And if I don't want to tell you why I left, I won't tell you," she said, annoyed.
"Damn it, Katia!" he shouted, hitting the wall with his fist forcefully. Katia looked at him a little frightened. "Something could have happened to you! What the hell were you thinking!? The streets of Munich are dangerous at night!"
"Nothing happened to me. It's not the first time I've walked the streets at those hours. In Seattle..."
"Seattle is not as dangerous as Munich."
"But nothing happened to me. I can take care of myself," she told him.
"Of course. Nothing happened to you because Inspector Müller showed up and brought you here. What did he tell you? To help him catch me? Don't tell me you believe what he said..." he said with a sarcastic smile.
"Of course, I don't believe him, but can't I doubt?"
"No!" Katia took a step back and bumped into the edge of the bed. "The only thing that man wants is to see me behind bars, and you are his best card to help him achieve it! You know why? Because you're my wife! That's why he approached you!"
"I told you I wouldn't help the police put you in jail," she said calmly, but something inside her was hurting with each of his shouts. It was her heart. "Wait a minute, are you yelling at me because I left the party? Or because someone other than you or Joshua brought me here? Because if that's the case, I advise you to shut up because you have no reason to do so. You're nobody in my life... and if you claim to be my husband, I'll throw this heel at your head," she warned when she saw he was about to speak. "At least I don't sneak into women's restrooms to have sex," he looked surprised. "The woman you slept with said it. We were at the same table." She turned around and left the pets on the bed. "So don't come with that attitude, we have enough for both of us."
"And why do you care who I sleep with?" She shook her head, annoyed. "You yourself said there's nothing between us to keep us faithful to each other. So I can do whatever I please whenever I want."
"I hate you! I swear I hate you with all my soul! You're the worst person I've ever met in my life! These past few weeks, I felt bad about sleeping with you. I love Oscar! Oscar! And there's nothing I want more than to be with him and not with you! All I want is... is for you to leave me alone once and for all, and I want to be happy with Oscar. Why don't you give me a divorce already and end this nonsense? The fact that..." She stopped.
"The fact that what?" she said very seriously.
"The fact that being married to you makes me feel... feel bad about myself all the time. I want you far, far away from me," she bit her lower lip. "You're a cancer in my life, and I want to get rid of you forever."
They stared at each other in silence. Their eyes conveyed what each of them was feeling.
Stefan was upset, no... he was very angry. Katia felt bad for telling him he was a cancer, but it was true that she wanted a divorce.
She turned her head to the right and squinted. But when she looked back at Stefan, he was just a few steps away from her. She had to appear determined about what she had told him, but when she looked into his eyes, she realized she had gone too far.
"I may be a cancer in your life, but you have tired me with constant 'I love Oscar.' Let me remind you that you married me, and furthermore, your boyfriend isn't with you. If I were him, I wouldn't have allowed another man to marry you, and even if I were dying, I wouldn't want another man by your side... Yes, I'm saying that your boyfriend doesn't love you," he placed a hand on his waist and pointed at her with the other. "If you really loved him, you wouldn't have slept with me these past few days, or the first few times. And if I sleep with other women, it's because I see nothing in you that attracts me. I think I sleep with you out of pity more than anything else," he told her harshly. "Because the only thing I feel for you is pity."
"Then give me a divorce, and you won't see me again," she said with clenched fists.
"Of course, I'll give it to you. I hope to lose sight of you once and for all," he turned around and walked towards the door. "But when you sign, I want you out of my house. And if not, I'll throw you out like a stray dog."
"Fine, because I don't particularly enjoy being in this house. So I'll leave when you sign," she crossed her arms.
"Good, because I don't want to have you here anymore. You're like a black widow. Everyone who's close to you or touched by you ends up dead. I hope nothing happens to me," he said before leaving and slamming the door shut. "Oh, one more thing! You've just been one more in my conquest collection! Even whores are worth much more than you!" Stefan shouted from behind the door.
Katia covered her mouth with the back of her hand and fell to her knees as tears streamed down her cheeks. She didn't know why her heart hurt so much.
Suddenly, she had to get up and run to the bathroom. She lifted the toilet lid and began to vomit.
A few minutes later, she sat on the floor with her legs drawn up, allowing the tears to keep falling. She ran a hand over her forehead, lifting her bangs, and held onto her legs with the other.
When she felt better, she stood up and entered her room. Unable to stop her tears, she packed her bags with the clothes she had brought to spend the summer in that place.
Then, once she finished and changed her clothes, she leaned down to her pets and said sadly:
"I hope you behave well. I can't take you with me; I'm so sorry."
She petted them one last time, picked up her suitcases, and left the room without dragging them on the floor. She went down the stairs, biting her lower lip, and walked to the house's front door.
She opened the door and took one last look inside that house she would never see again. She sighed with her eyes closed and closed the door behind her.
She didn't want to be in that place for another minute.
Since she didn't have a vehicle, she began walking down the path that led to the large estate to exit that property that belonged to the cruel man who had stayed in the house.
