Chapter 300: I Am Not Worthy, Neither Are You
Scarlett looked at him. He actually looked pretty rough.
Daniel, who was always refined and aloof, composed and steady.
Right now his shirt was wrinkled, his hair slightly messy, eyes bloodshot, stubble showing on his chin, and several scratch marks on his neck and the side of his face.
Scarlett thought he must be upset too, regretful and heartbroken.
But looking at him like this, she felt nothing. Nothing at all.
She stared at him with empty eyes, and after a long pause, spoke in a hoarse voice.
"Hate you? I should hate you, right? But how am I any better than you? I'm the one who deserves to die."
Scarlett lowered her head, her hands resting on her now-empty belly, her fingers slowly twisting tightly together.
In her daze, she had heard vague voices. She knew James was actually fine.
That call from Kaia and the hospital was just John's trick to deceive Scarlett.
Daniel had also left bodyguards to protect Scarlett. Without Rocky and Gia's protection, who knows what state Scarlett would be in now.
So what right did Scarlett have to hate anyone else?
She should hate herself more. She was too stupid!
She had promised again and again to protect Bunny, but broke her promise and put Bunny in danger.
She hadn't protected her own child. She had failed as a mother!
Hearing her say this, the guilt, regret, and pain in Daniel's heart didn't lessen one bit. Instead, it was like she had poured salt on his wound, burning even more.
His expression changed slightly as he suddenly reached out and pulled Scarlett's hands out from under the blanket.
Seeing that she had pinched and scratched her own fingers until they were spotted with blood, Daniel's face turned cold and dark.
"Scarlett, what are you doing! Look at me!"
He cupped her face, his eyes red and burning.
"You did nothing wrong. The ones who are wrong are the people who did evil! You should hate me. I'm the one who failed to protect you and our child. I'm the one who wasn't by your side when you needed me most!"
Daniel was extremely worried. Childbirth was already life-threatening for women, and Scarlett had suffered such a terrible trauma on top of it.
The doctor said if her emotions fluctuated too much, her body couldn't handle it. But he was even more worried that if she kept blaming herself and suppressing everything, she would develop postpartum depression.
He would rather she redirect her anger and hate him than blame herself.
And he truly was hateful, deserving of hate!
Scarlett stared at him blankly, her eyes filled with gray defeat.
"What good would hating you do? If I hate you, will my Bunny come back?"
Love and hate both meant nothing to her anymore.
Daniel's fingers cupping Scarlett's face trembled slightly. She was looking at him, but there was nothing of him left in her eyes.
Daniel's breathing became heavy. "Scarlett, do you never want to see me again?"
Scarlett gazed at his bloodshot eyes, churning with intense emotions, but she didn't want to figure out what those feelings were anymore.
Her colorless lips moved. "Yes. When I see you, I think of my Bunny, I think of everything from last night, I think of how when Bunny and I were struggling in pain, you were with another woman during her delivery."
Scarlett raised her hand and pulled away Daniel's hands from her face, fell back onto the hospital bed, and closed her eyes.
Slowly, she gave a desolate, self-mocking smile and continued.
"Daniel, you know what? I had even forgiven you before. I believed what you said about starting over. I was even thinking, maybe this time we could be happy."
Scarlett's voice finally caught, and after a long pause, she let out a hoarse, miserable laugh.
Daniel stood by the bed, looking at Scarlett lying there weak and lifeless, as if she had lost all vitality and soul. He clenched his fists, his bloodshot eyes trembling.
Actually, he had vaguely sensed it before.
Her softening toward him. She accepted the people he arranged around her. Gia contacted him every day, and Scarlett must have known, must have allowed it.
And that light laugh Scarlett gave in the car that day—every time he thought of it these past few days, his heart felt light, felt full of ambition.
He had arranged his schedule, planned how to court her, to date like young lovers, to start fresh.
He had also prepared to be with her throughout her postpartum recovery after she gave birth, to take care of her and the baby.
But he never expected it would all be destroyed so suddenly, that it would all become just a pipe dream.
Even more, he never expected to hear with his own ears that she had truly been willing to give him another chance, but that chance had slipped through his fingers in an even crueler way, breaking his heart completely.
"Scarlett, I..."
He wanted to say, give me one more chance. We're still so young. We can have more babies in the future.
More than one.
But these words stuck in his throat and he couldn't say them.
He actually knew how soft her heart was toward him.
Time and time again, bleeding and swallowing tears, she had moved closer to him.
He had messed up again. How could he ask her for anything more?
Daniel closed his burning eyes tightly, but Scarlett opened hers at that moment.
She looked at the stiff figure standing by the bed and said hoarsely.
"Starting over, parting on good terms—I don't deserve it, and neither do you."
A tear finally rolled silently from the corner of her eye.
Scarlett raised her hand and gently wiped it away, leaving no trace.
She said, "So, Daniel, please leave. Later, we'll go get the divorce certificate, and let's never see each other again."
Daniel opened his eyes, his Adam's apple bobbing.
"Scarlett, does it have to be this way? Is there no other possibility between us?"
Scarlett's lips moved. "Unless Bunny comes back."
Otherwise, there was no possibility left between them.
Daniel looked at her, his expression gloomy to the extreme.
But Scarlett had already closed her eyes. A moment later, footsteps sounded as Daniel walked out.
As Daniel closed the hospital room door, he heard muffled sounds from inside.
Buried under the blanket, barely audible.
The force of his hand on the handle nearly broke the doorknob.
As he turned around, two figures rushed over from the other end of the hallway—Sarah and Alton.
Alton had introduced Sarah to a director. She had auditioned for the female lead in a fantasy film crew and went to Skyview City.
Sarah had just finished her audition when she got the news about Scarlett's accident and stood up the director's dinner.
She had raced back all the way. Alton had just gotten out of the car and thrown up several times by the roadside, even bringing up stomach acid from all the jostling.
Sarah charged straight at Daniel. The bodyguards saw something was wrong and immediately moved to block her.
But Daniel said in a low voice.
"Everyone stand back."
The bodyguards hesitated and stepped back. Sarah rushed right up to Daniel without any obstacles.
Her face was full of anger. "Daniel, what right do you have to stand here! Where were you when Scarlett was in trouble? You can't even protect your woman and child—what kind of man are you!"
Sarah clenched her fist and swung at Daniel's face.
Alton was afraid she would do something reckless and impulsive, so he chased after her from behind and managed to grab Sarah's hand.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed! The baby's gone—Daniel must be feeling worse than you do. Stop making trouble, okay! Besides, it was John who did it. Daniel didn't expect it either!"
Alton held Sarah tightly. Sarah struggled and cursed angrily.
"What does he have to feel bad about! Does he have the right to feel bad? He didn't think of it because all his attention was on the White family, on the bastard in Alice's belly. How could Daniel think of anything else?
He just sent two bodyguards to brush Scarlett off, and he could sleep easy? He has an excuse now? Yes, John did it, but he wasn't the one who sent Scarlett to the hospital in the end either!"
