Chapter 57: Pregnancy Test Confirmed
Alexander unfolded the paper, his hands trembling ever so slightly. His eyes skimmed the bold word at the top: “Positive.” For a moment, the world seemed to fall away, leaving only the stark realization of what this meant. His lips parted, but no words came out.
Rachel stood silently in front of him, her hands twisting nervously. The silence stretched, thick with anticipation and fear. She had spent days preparing for this moment, yet she found herself utterly unprepared for his reaction.
“Rachel…” Alexander finally managed, his voice rough with emotion. His eyes lifted to hers, wide and unsteady. “Is this real? Are we… having a baby?”
Her heart thudded painfully in her chest as she nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. “Yes, Alexander. I’m pregnant.”
Alexander’s knees nearly gave out as he stepped closer, his hands moving instinctively to cup her face. “We’re having a baby,” he repeated softly, almost as if saying the words aloud would make them more real.
Rachel’s lip quivered. “I didn’t know how to tell you. I was scared… scared that it might be too much, that—”
He silenced her with a gentle kiss on her forehead. “Rachel, this is… incredible. Scary, yes, but incredible.”
The floodgates opened as Rachel let out a shaky sob, her arms wrapping around him. She had been bracing herself for doubt, for rejection, but instead, Alexander’s embrace felt like a lifeline.
“I know we’ve been through so much,” he murmured into her hair. “But this baby… it’s a sign, Rachel. A chance to start over.”
They spent the rest of the night talking, the tension between them softening into tentative hope. Alexander’s excitement was infectious as he began imagining the future—a nursery, baby names, family trips.
Rachel found herself smiling, though a part of her still hesitated. “What if we’re not ready?” she whispered. “What if… we mess this up like we did before?”
Alexander’s expression turned serious. He took her hands in his, his gaze steady. “Rachel, we’ve both made mistakes. But we’ve also grown. This time, we’ll do it differently. Together.”
His words were a balm to her weary soul, and for the first time in a long time, Rachel allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, they could make this work.
The next morning, Alexander surprised Rachel by canceling his meetings. “Today is about us,” he declared, pulling her into the kitchen.
“What are you doing?” she asked, amused as she watched him fumble with a recipe book.
“Making breakfast,” he replied confidently, though his actions betrayed his lack of experience.
Rachel couldn’t help but laugh as she joined him, taking over when he nearly burned the eggs. The domestic simplicity of the moment felt foreign yet comforting.
After breakfast, Alexander took her shopping for baby supplies. Although it was early, he insisted on starting preparations immediately. Rachel found herself caught up in his enthusiasm, her fears momentarily overshadowed by the joy of imagining their future as a family.
Later that afternoon, Rachel’s mother, Martha Green, stopped by unannounced. Her sharp eyes immediately picked up on the subtle changes in Rachel’s demeanor.
“Something’s different,” Martha said, her voice laced with curiosity.
Rachel hesitated, glancing at Alexander. He nodded, encouraging her.
“We’re having a baby,” Rachel admitted, her voice tinged with both excitement and apprehension.
Martha’s reaction was a mix of surprise and joy. “Oh, Rachel,” she said, pulling her daughter into a hug. “This is wonderful news.”
As the three of them sat down to talk, Martha shared stories from Rachel’s childhood, offering advice and encouragement. For the first time in years, Rachel felt the warmth of her mother’s unconditional support.
That evening, as Rachel and Alexander sat in the living room, discussing plans for the future, a sudden noise from outside shattered the calm. Alexander immediately went to investigate, his protective instincts kicking in.
He returned moments later, his face grim. “Someone left this on the doorstep,” he said, holding up a small, unmarked envelope.
Rachel’s hands shook as she opened it. Inside was a single photograph of her and Alexander taken earlier that day at the baby store, along with a chilling note:
“Congratulations on the baby. Enjoy your happiness while it lasts.”
Alexander’s jaw tightened as he pulled Rachel into his arms. “We won’t let them scare us,” he vowed. “No one will take this away from us.”
Determined not to let fear overshadow their joy, Alexander and Rachel spent the rest of the evening focusing on their growing family. As they sat together in the nursery, imagining what it would look like once it was complete, Rachel felt a glimmer of hope.
“Alexander,” she said softly, “I’m still scared. But I want this. I want us.”
He took her hand, his gaze unwavering. “Then we’ll face everything together. No more running, no more hiding.”
For the first time in years, Rachel felt a sense of peace.
As they prepared for bed, Rachel’s phone buzzed on the nightstand. She picked it up, her heart skipping a beat when she saw the message:
“The truth will come out, Rachel. And when it does, you’ll regret everything.”
Her breath hitched as Alexander noticed her pale face. “What is it?” he asked.
Rachel turned the phone to him, her voice barely above a whisper. “Someone knows.”
