Chapter 55: Odegaard's School Event

Rachel held up  her  phone, her heart pounding as David's voice echoed in her ears. “Rachel, it’s David. We need to talk. It’s about the Sterlings.”

In an attempt to regain her composure, Rachel inhaled deeply.

"David, what could you possibly say to me? after all of you did?”

She hadn't heard David's voice for a while now, but it softened. "This is bigger than us, even if I know I don't deserve your trust. At noon, meet me at the park beside the lake. Alone".

With all of her instincts telling her not to go, she hesitated. "What if I don't?"

He merely responded, "Then you'll never know the truth," then he hung up, leaving Rachel staring at her phone with a mixture of annoyance and discomfort.

The next few hours were a haze. She slept very little, her mind racing up and down. By morning, sunshine  streamed through the curtains, cruelly mocking her unrest.

Even though she had a restless night, Rachel knew she couldn't let David's cryptic warning ruin her day. She had assured him that she would not miss Odegaard's school even, which was slated for this morning.

-------------------------------------

The school auditorium was a hive of activity as kids and parents crowded in. "Dream Big, Little Stars" was the theme of the vibrant banners and streamers that stretched above the stage.

As they made their way through the mob, Rachel firmly grasped Odegaard's hand.

His expression showed a mixture of nervousness and delight as his tiny fingers grasped hers.

“Mom, do you think everyone will like my performance?”  His voice was small as he asked.

Rachel put her hands on his shoulders and crouched down. "Sweetheart, they will love it. Just remember to have fun and talk clearly".

Alexander showed up next to them with a little bunch of flowers. He winked and continued, "And if they don't like it, we'll buy out the school and make them change their minds."

Odegaard's nerves relaxed as he laughed. Alexander's attempt to lighten the mood made Rachel grin.

The principal gave a dynamic introduction to kick off the event, stressing the value of fostering young minds' creativity and self-assurance.

The second row was the ideal spot for Rachel and Alexander to observe Odegaard's performance.

Rachel felt a surge of pride as he took the stage when it was his turn. He personified the idea of having big dreams while dressed as a miniature astronaut.

During his performance, he recited a poem he had written about stars exploration, which was full of heartfelt sentiments and humor. "I'll fly to the moon when I grow up, or I might even plant a star garden." But I know my parents will always be there, no matter where my goals lead me".

Rachel's eyes stung with tears as the audience erupted in cheers. Alexander spoke softly as he leaned forward. "He gets that creativity from you, you know."

Startled by the sincerity in his voice, Rachel turned to face him. "You think so?"

“I know so,” he said, his eyes meeting hers in a way that made her pulse skip a beat. Families met in the schoolyard for photos and refreshments after the ceremony.

Odegaard happily displayed the tiny medal he had earned for his accomplishment as he darted amongst his friends.

From a distance, Rachel and Alexander observed, enjoying a private moment together. Then Alexander spoke up, "He's amazing," with a hint of wonder in his voice. Rachel gave a nod.

"He is, in fact. I sometimes wonder how I got so lucky when I look at him".

"You earned it," Alexander said abruptly. "You are the reason for everything he is and will become."

Rachel's barriers briefly collapsed as she gazed at him.

"I wasn't always certain that I was acting morally. Keeping him away from you and raising him alone... I had a lot of self-doubt.

Alexander's hand touched hers as he reached out. "You followed your instincts. And you were right to keep him safe".

She felt hope, something she hadn't let herself feel in years, thanks to the warmth of his touch and the sincerity in his voice.

The celebration started to wind down as the morning gave way to the afternoon.

Children held their certificates of participation as families gathered.

When Rachel looked at her phone, she noticed that an unknown number had left a missed call.

Her belly rumbled. "Is everything alright?" Alexander asked, seeing her mood swing.

She hastily typed a message to check in with her mother and admitted, "I'm not sure." The phone buzzed once more before she could put it aside. She responded this time.

"Rachel?"

Her breath caught. "David?"

He answered in a quiet voice, "Yes." “I know you’re at Odegaard’s event, but this can’t wait. We must meet".

She yelled, "I already told you I don't trust you."

"I get it," he answered abruptly.  “But if you care about your family, you’ll listen to what I have to say.”

Rachel paused, her eyes darting between Odegaard and Alexander.

"Where?" she inquired at last.

"The same place we agreed on earlier". Before he hung up, he said, "Be there in an hour."

\-------------------

Rachel's thoughts were racing on their way home.

Alexander watched her from the passenger seat. After some while, he said, "Want to tell me what's going on?"

Rachel let out a sigh. "It's David. He wants to tell me something important".

Alexander's mouth clenched. "You won't be meeting him alone."

"I can manage," she pressed.

"I'm not doubting that," he answered. "But I'm coming along."

Odegaard's voice came from the backseat, interrupting their almost silent discussion.

“Mom, Dad, did you see how many people clapped for me?”

Rachel's heart softened as she looked at him in the rearview mirror. "Yes, dear, we did. You were incredible.

Alexander smiled as he turned to face him. "I've never seen a better astronaut."

oblivious to the storm brewing in his parents’ world. Odegaard smiled.

Rachel sat on the balcony later that night, holding her phone tightly. Her gut told her that seeing David was a mistake as she gazed over the message he had sent her.

But as she peered back into the house, where Odegaard chuckled with Alexander over a chess game, she realized she couldn’t ignore it. She was willing to go to any lengths to ensure the safety of her family.

Alexander grabbed Rachel's arm as she was about to head out for the meeting. With his eyes flaming with resolve, he added firmly,

“If you’re going, then we’re going together,” he said firmly, his eyes blazing with determination.

Rachel hesitated, then nodded.

Together, they stepped out into the night, ready to face yet another uncertainty.
