Chapter 53: "Family Ties, Broken and Rebuilt"
With a solid but unsure grip, Alexander's hand trembled as he took Rachel's.
"As soon as I laid eyes on Odegaard... His voice was hardly audible above a whisper when he started, "I knew he was mine."
As Rachel struggled to understand what he had said, her eyes widened and her breath caught.
"I didn't need confirmation or a test. I just knew.
And I kept it a secret because I was worried about what it would mean for you and us if I told you.
Tears welled up in Rachel's eyes.
With a flurry of disbelief, rage, and a sliver of relief, she withdrew her hand. "You knew?" she said in a shaky voice. You knew this entire time, Alexander? And you kept silent ?
With tears still in his eyes, Alexander said, "I didn't know how." "I believed that the greatest defense for you two was to remain silent. I thought that if I spoke up, I would never be able to gain your trust again".
With her heart racing, Rachel turned away.
The reality tore through the flimsy barriers she had erected around herself like a cyclone. Her voice broke as she murmured, "You should have told me." "I needed to know."
Alexander took a step forward, his voice urgent. "Yes, Rachel, I know. But I'm here now, even though I knew I let you down. I'm willing to go to any lengths to put things right for our family.
Rachel's thoughts drifted back to how it all started, to the uncertain moments and the restless nights she spent caring for Odegaard all by herself, wondering if Alexander ever gave them any regard".
She pointed to a photo of Alexander on her phone and recalled the night Odegaard shouted, "Daddy."
Knowing that her son's innocent question contained a truth she was too afraid to face made her heart ache a little, even if she had laughed it off at the time.
She whispered, her voice trembling, "I carried this alone for years." "Alexander, do you know how that felt? to wonder if you even gave a damn while I watched my son grow up without his father".
Alexander answered, his voice breaking, "I cared every single day." I couldn't have gone a day without thinking of you two. However, I let my pride and worries to stand in the way".Before I returned to your life, I wanted to be the man you deserved. Rather, I just made things worse".
Rachel gazed at him, looking for the truth in his eyes. She had never noticed such vulnerability in his eyes before.
With tears in her eyes, she said, "I'm not sure if I can forgive you, Alexander." "But I'm not sure if I can continue hating you either."
A knock on the door cut them off before Alexander could reply.
When Alexander opened the door and saw Henry standing there, Rachel wiped away her tears and gathered herself.
He softened, almost hesitantly, his normally harsh look. "Can I come in?" Henry looked from one to the other and asked.
Henry could feel the tension in the air as soon as he walked into the room. He looked at Rachel as he cleared his throat. His voice was unusually soft as he opened, "I've come to say something I should have said a long time ago."
Rachel tensed, not knowing what to expect. Alexander's jaw was clenched as he stood guard next to her. Henry looked down and said, "I was wrong."
"Rachel, I unfairly judged you. I saw you as a danger to our family and the legacy I have worked so hard to build. However, after watching your defend my grandson and Alexander... I now understand that you pose no threat. But rather you're the glue that holds this family together".
Rachel's mouth dropped open in surprise. This was not the Henry she knew, the one who had treated her with contempt and disdained her at every opportunity he had.
Henry's face softened even more as he looked to Alexander. "And you—you've grown into the man I always imagined you would be. My perspective changed as a result of seeing your dedication and spending time with your son".
“I don’t know what to say,” Rachel said finally, her voice barely audible. “You’ve made it clear for years that I didn’t belong.”
Henry's age was more apparent than ever as his shoulders drooped. "Rachel, I made mistakes. I allowed my fear of losing control to prevent me from seeing what was truly important. Family. And whether I like it or not, you are now family, Rachel.
With a forceful yet courteous tone, Alexander took a step forward. "It's not just about Rachel, Dad. It also about Odegaard. He should be raised in a family that encourages him rather than one that is split apart by resentment and arrogance.
Henry stared at his son and nodded, his eyes softening.
“You’re right. I want to do better—for all of you. But there’s something I need to tell you both.”
Rachel and Alexander exchanged a wary glance as Henry continued, “I’ve been investigating David. "He has been embezzling money from Sterling Enterprises for years and using it to control smaller businesses, like yours, Rachel, so he's not simply implicated in the latest scandals".
Rachel's mouth clenched. "That clarifies why my company has been having trouble. He has been actively undermining me".
With a firm voice, Henry put a hand on her shoulder. we'll put a stop to this together. David will face the wrath of his betrayal.
Alexander's phone buzzed on the table as they spoke about what to do next.
He scowled as he looked at the screen. He answered the phone and said, "It's Detective Harris."
Harris spoke in a somber tone. "We've discovered something new, Alexander". "David had others working with him. Someone else is in charge, and they have a lot more authority than we thought".
Alexander gripped the phone more firmly.
"Who?"
"Although they don't yet have a name, they are associated with Sterling Enterprises. This now concerns your entire company, not simply Rachel or Odegaard".
A tremendous bang echoed from downstairs before they had time to digest the information.
After exchanging glances, they all hurried out of the room.
The window in the living room was broken, and glass was all over the floor.
There was a pebble among the fragment wrapped in a piece of paper. Rachel and Henry watched anxiously as Alexander picked it up and unfolded the note.
The message was straightforward but terrifying: “You’ve been warned. Stay out of this, or you’ll lose everything.”
Alexander stared at Rachel and Henry, his mouth tightening. "They've made their move, Now it's our turn.
