Chapter 183: Hank Hospitalized After Being Stimulated
Before this, Jessica had mentioned that Evan had a supplementary black card with no spending limit, but she still hadn't received it.
She strongly suspected that card was in Harper's hands. And when they divorced, Evan must have given Harper a substantial settlement. The money Harper used to buy that villa—it all came from Evan!
She'd always considered herself Mrs. Morgan, always believed everything Evan owned was hers. Now Harper had walked away with a huge sum and was still spending Evan's money. How could she stand for that?
Claire extended her hand toward Harper. "You're already divorced. How can you have the nerve to keep using Evan's card? You definitely bought that villa with Evan's money. How can you have the nerve to spend it!"
She did have a card Evan had given her, but that was part of her divorce settlement. Why should she hand it over to Claire? "What card? I don't have one. Besides, I bought this villa with my own money. What does it have to do with Evan?"
"Your own money? Someone who's never held a job—where would you get money? Your parents don't even like you. They couldn't possibly have given you much. You must have bought it with Evan's money." Claire didn't believe Harper, convinced she'd spent Evan's money.
Harper shifted her gaze to Evan, gesturing for Claire to look at him. "The man himself is standing right here. Why don't you ask him? The money he gave me was my divorce settlement. Once he gave it to me, it became mine. However I spend it is my business."
"As for any other money belonging to Evan, I haven't spent a single cent of it. If you don't believe me, check the transaction records and see whose money I'm actually spending."
Feeling she'd made herself perfectly clear, and convinced Claire was mentally unhinged, Harper didn't give her a chance to continue. She walked decisively into her house and shut the door, leaving the two of them outside.
Claire only believed what she chose to believe and didn't trust Harper's words at all. She turned to Evan, demanding, "You gave her the supplementary black card, didn't you? The money she used to buy the villa—it's all yours, isn't it?"
Evan pinched the bridge of his nose. He was finding Claire increasingly unreasonable. "No. She hasn't spent my money."
Claire looked into Evan's eyes. He didn't look away. His gaze showed only sincerity, along with a hint of helplessness and impatience. She believed he was telling the truth.
If that was the case, then where did Harper's money come from? Claire remained puzzled.
"We should head back. Your body hasn't fully recovered yet. You shouldn't stay outside too long." After speaking, Evan turned and walked toward his own villa.
Claire felt somewhat unwilling to let it go, but Harper had already closed the door and Evan was leaving. She could only follow resentfully behind Evan toward the villa, though she filed this incident away in her mind.
When the international competition began, Harper specifically requested time off to fly abroad. This competition was livestreamed on Instagram, and Harper's performance during the event was witnessed by many.
Only then did everyone discover that Harper wasn't some useless waste who knew nothing—she was actually brilliant. Her academic credentials were made public: dual doctorates. Those who had insulted her before found their faces burning with shame.
At the same time, news of Harper and Evan's divorce was also posted on Instagram.
At first, many people didn't believe it, but neither Harper nor Evan came forward to deny it. This tacit acknowledgment meant the divorce was indeed real.
If previously everyone had felt Evan and Harper should divorce and that Evan should be with Claire instead, after Harper's credentials and competition performance became public, public opinion began tilting toward Harper's side.
It was also at this time that people took notice of Harper's appearance. Putting Harper and Evan together again, they realized the two were actually perfectly matched.
For a while, Instagram erupted with discussions about whether Evan regretted the divorce and when Evan and Claire would get married.
Neither Evan nor Harper paid attention to this chatter, but Claire followed it closely.
She'd previously used public opinion to pressure Harper into divorcing Evan and force Evan to make a choice and stand on her side.
Now Harper was gradually revealing her excellence, and public opinion was no longer in Claire's favor. She had to find a way to get Evan to agree to an engagement and marriage quickly. Otherwise, she feared she'd never become Mrs. Morgan.
Evan sat in his office. On the computer screen before him wasn't an open company file but rather video footage of Harper's competition.
Harper on the competition stage was confident and radiant, as if glowing from within. This was somewhat different from how she'd been at academic conferences—even more dazzling.
Watching Harper now, Evan couldn't quite identify what he was feeling. Regret? Perhaps a little.
And why was he only learning about her after the divorce?
Before their divorce, he'd arranged for people to investigate Harper. Back then, they hadn't uncovered much. After the divorce, quite a bit of information had suddenly become available.
"Was it really not you deliberately hiding things?" Evan murmured to himself, his mind filled with bits and pieces of his time with Harper.
He strongly suspected this point—why couldn't they find anything before the divorce, but could immediately after? Clearly someone had deliberately concealed information.
Just then, Evan's phone rang. The caller was the butler. "Young Master, Hank learned about your divorce from the missus. The shock caused him to collapse. He's been taken to the hospital. Please come immediately."
"Alright, I'll be right there." Hanging up, Evan rushed toward the hospital.
He'd always known the divorce news couldn't be hidden for long, but Hank couldn't handle shocks. Evan had tried his best to keep it secret. He hadn't expected Hank to find out so soon.
By the time Evan reached the hospital, Claire was already there.
The butler immediately approached to report. "Master Evan, Hank's condition has stabilized, but he hasn't woken up yet. The doctor emphasized that Hank cannot endure any more shocks."
Evan nodded. He was about to push open the hospital room door when Claire grabbed his arm. "Evan, can I go in with you to see Grandpa?"
Hank still hadn't accepted Claire. Having just suffered a shock, if he woke up and saw Claire, Evan feared he'd be shocked again. "Claire, Grandpa's condition just stabilized. Come visit later. Don't go in right now. You should head back."
Claire wanted to use this opportunity to get Hank to agree to her engagement with Evan. If Hank would just give his approval, her situation with Evan would improve dramatically.
Her calculation was that this was a hospital—if Hank suffered another shock, he could be treated immediately...
