The Turning Point
Lyra's POV
As I stood there, looking at Damian, the weight of the talk from that night weighed heavy in the air. The feelings swirled in my head: bewilderment, betrayal, and a heavy, smothering hurt. What was the situation? How could the man I had trusted and grown to love end up being the major cause of my family's demise?
The picture of my father's face when I told him the truth would not leave me. Fear and guilt. Now, however, it felt like a fresh betrayal to face Damian. He was responsible for everything that had transpired and had pulled the strings, which had contributed to the demise of my family.
My hands shaking, I walked across the room and stared at him. His big shoulders tensed, and his back turned. He had remained silent ever since the phone call regarding Ethan. As though the years of manipulation, the anguish, and the falsehoods had all become ingrained in his bones, leaving him a man on the verge of collapse.
With a voice that was hardly more than a whisper, I screamed out, "Damian," carrying the weight of all the questions I had and all I needed to know.
He didn't get back up. He was stiflingly silent. My chest was pounded by my heart. How was he able to remain composed when I was tearing up inside?
I added, more forcefully and loudly, "I need answers." "I must understand why. Why did you contribute to my family's demise? Why you haven't told me about this?
At last, his sharp blue eyes met mine as he turned. What I saw there was primal, something that made my chest constrict with grief and rage.
“Lyra.” His lips were pressed together as if he were attempting to suppress something, making his voice strained as if the truth was too much for him to handle.
My voice rose as I moved on. Don't "Lyra" me! You would be foolish to act as though this is unimportant. My dad, my family,... Damian, everything is ruined by you. Everything. I am now left standing here, attempting to figure out why I am still standing next to you. Why do you still touch me, kiss me, and give me faith in things I can no longer even begin to believe?
He recoiled as if I had hit him, and his walls cracked for a second, only a tiny bit, but enough for me to glimpse the pain behind his icy façade. He stiffened his jaw, and I could see that he was attempting to suppress the feelings that were surfacing.
"You don't comprehend," he said, his voice tense with feeling. He moved closer to me, his eyes less intense but still wary. This is not what I ever intended for you, Lyra. That’s something you must be aware of.
With my fists clenched, I shook my head. Why, therefore, did you allow it to occur? You didn't stop it, but why? Why did you not alert me? What prevented you from telling me the truth before we became involved?
For a considerable amount of time, he did not respond to the question that lingered. He seemed unable to look at me any longer, as his eyes fell to the ground. In a barely heard murmur, he said, "I couldn't." “I was unable to. You couldn't leave me. I had to keep you close to me.
I felt like I was slapped by his remarks, and I was momentarily out of breath. "You I rambled on, my voice full of incredulity. "You were manipulating me. I fell for you because of you, and now everything is a lie.
I didn't want to offend you, Lyra. To God, I swear. His speech faltered, and I could see the strain in his eyes as the guilt pressed down on him like a physical burden. This was not what I intended to happen. If I could make you trust me and keep you near, I believed that things would be different.
I stepped back, allowing the truth of what he had spoken to set in. The space seemed too cramped, and the air too dense. I couldn't decide if I should cry or yell. The love I had for him and the rage that raged in my chest were tearing apart every part of me.
With the words tasting like ash in my mouth, I muttered, "You lied to me." You deceived me, and I fell for it. Now, however... I’m footing the bill.
His voice a little louder now, he reiterated, "I didn't want to hurt you." Nevertheless, I was at a loss. I had people and things that I needed to keep safe. People that I was unable to let go. It would be worthwhile, I reasoned, if I kept you in the dark and protected you from all of this.
I became so irritated that I quickly found myself standing in front of him with my hand up to slap him across the face. He reached out and grabbed my wrist in a vice-like grip just before contact.
He murmured, "Don't," in a quiet, cautionary voice. Please. Don't allow this to destroy us, even though I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. Do it, Lyra.
As I looked up at him and saw the desperation in his eyes, my vision became blurry with tears. "How are you able to ask me," In the end? Considering all that you've done? Is it possible for me to simply forgive you?
He released his hold on my wrist and stated, "I'm not pleading for your pardon." "I'm merely requesting a chance. An opportunity to prove to you that I'm not who you believe me to be.
The feelings swept over me in waves, making the room seem to be spinning. The man I had grown to love and the one who had deceived me in ways I couldn't possibly fathom caused my heart to hurt.
"I'm not sure if I can give you that chance," I said in a broken voice. "I'm not sure if I can put my trust back in you."
When Damian's face contorted in agony, I noticed the vulnerability he hardly ever showed. His hands reached out and cupped my face. I beg you, he whispered. "Remain persistent with me."
I was unable to escape the emotional tornado that was created when the hurt, betrayal, and love all merged in that one instant. Leaning forward, he tentatively and softly kissed me. It seemed as though the world, the falsehoods, and the suffering had all stopped for a moment. It was only us, the two of us, in that brief silence.
But the calm was short-lived. Everything I had been suppressing poured out as soon as the kiss became more intense. Regardless of everything, regardless of the treachery, my body reacted to him. I was unable to shake the force of our unquestionable chemistry, even in the middle of all the lies.
He seemed to be attempting to make up for all the time he had withheld by guiding me closer as his hands moved over my body. Still, the question stayed in the back of my mind. Am I able to forgive him? Might I ever love him again?
I drew away from him, gasping, "I can't keep doing this." Not until you reveal everything to me. The truth is what I need. Every single thing.
With doubt clouding his eyes, Damian paused. "Lyra, I'll tell you all. However, you must believe me. I never meant to cause you any harm, so trust me. Believe me, I want us to be genuine.
With my chest rising and falling quickly, I drew a nervous breath. Then explain. Every single thing.
He was about to say anything when there was a huge crash that sounded so abrupt and startling that I jumped. The room's door crashed open as I turned, my heart thumping.
A figure I had never seen before appeared in the doorway.
Ethan.
Nor was he alone.
My blood was freezing, and my heart stopped. As he entered the room, Ethan's dark and menacing demeanor caused his eyes to meet mine, a sneer to twist on his lips.
With an air of hate in his voice, he questioned, "Lyra, did you miss me?"
Between the man I had once loved and the man who had only brought chaos into my life, I felt as though the world was tilting and I was still.
In an instant, the past suddenly rushed back.
