Chapter 81 Split Up
Chapter 81 Split Up
Skylar's face immediately darkened: "I knew it! Samuel, how many times have I told you to keep your distance from Hazel! You're married now, you need to act like a married man and stop getting too close to other women!"
"Mom, I understand what you mean. But some things are beyond my control. The relationship between the Carter family and the Jones family is deeply intertwined. I can't completely cut ties with the Carter family just because of personal feelings."
"Mom knows you're a careful person, it's just... that Hazel... I won't say more; you handle it yourself. But one thing - no matter what, Hazel is still an outsider! Don't let Lily think you have feelings for Hazel other than friendship. A woman's heart, once broken, can never fully heal."
"Don't worry, I will."
After Skylar left the study, David sent Willie a message: [Follow the plan tomorrow, go to Tranquil Springs Retreat. Also, have Andrew keep an eye on that best friend.]
Willie quickly replied: [Got it.]
David put away his phone, a hint of anticipation flashing in his eyes.
Tomorrow would be another interesting day.
He was looking forward to seeing what method Lily would use to continue "investigating" him.
And he... would gladly "cooperate" with her investigation.
After all, who doesn't love playing hide and seek?
On the other hand, after getting David's schedule, Lily returned to her room and immediately sent Olivia a message: [Samuel is going to Tranquil Springs Retreat tomorrow; I'll follow him. You go to the Jones Group, we'll split up.]
Olivia quickly replied: [Got it! Will complete the mission!]
Lily put down her phone and took a deep breath.
Tomorrow would be the moment of truth.
Samuel, are you David or not?
I'll know the answer soon.
Just as she was about to wash up, there was a sudden knock on the door.
"Lily, you're not asleep yet, are you?" It was Skylar's voice.
Lily quickly opened the door: "Mom, what's wrong?"
Skylar said with a smile, "I saw Samuel still working in the study. Go call him back to the room to rest. You two sleeping separately at night won't do."
Lily's face turned red instantly: "Mom..."
Skylar took her hand, "You're pregnant now, nighttime is when you need someone the most. I'll only feel at ease if Samuel is there to take care of you."
"Mom! I'm fine." Lily was even more embarrassed.
"Okay, okay, I won't say more." Skylar smiled and gave her a gentle push, "Go on, have Samuel stay in your room tonight and get some good rest."
With that, Skylar returned to her room, satisfied.
Lily stood at the door, feeling a bit troubled.
Her relationship with Samuel was already strained. To suddenly have Samuel stay in her room like this?
This... wouldn't it be too...
But if she didn't let Samuel in, Skylar would definitely get suspicious.
She bit her lip and finally walked toward the study.
After knocking, she pushed the door open.
David looked up, and seeing it was her, a flash of surprise crossed his eyes: "What's up?"
Lily was actually coming to him on her own?
Lily felt a bit uncomfortable, "Mom asked me to call you to rest. She said... she said you should stay in my room tonight."
David raised an eyebrow. As expected of his own mother, she really understood him.
Lily was still hesitating, wondering what she would do if Samuel refused, but unexpectedly, David didn't say a word and just stood up and walked out.
Lily was stunned for a moment, not expecting him to agree so readily.
The two returned to the room together.
The moment the door closed, the atmosphere suddenly became somewhat delicate.
Lily pointed at the sofa, "Same old rules, I sleep on the bed, you sleep on the sofa."
"Why? Aren't you afraid my mom will come check on us in the middle of the night? And I don't think I need to keep reminding you that we're husband and wife. Sleeping in the same bed is perfectly normal."
"But..."
"Or are you afraid I'll do something to you?" David's voice carried a hint of teasing.
Lily's face turned even redder: "I'm not..."
"Then let's sleep together," David said, already starting to take off his jacket. "Don't worry, I won't touch a pregnant woman."
Lily bit her lip and finally gave in. David was right - what if Skylar came in to check in the middle of the night? Although even Lily herself didn't believe this reason, she somehow agreed anyway.
After they both finished washing up, David noticed that Lily had placed several pillows in the middle of the bed.
David looked at the row of pillows and couldn't help but laugh.
"Is that really necessary?"
"Very necessary. You're not allowed to cross the line."
"Okay, okay, I won't cross the line." David agreed readily.
They each lay down, and the lights in the room went out.
In the darkness, Lily was too nervous to sleep. Just as her mind was wandering, she suddenly heard steady breathing from beside her.
Samuel... was asleep?
That fast?
Lily couldn't help but turn her head, looking at Samuel beside her in the moonlight.
David was lying on his side, his mask looking somewhat mysterious in the darkness.
His breathing was very steady, clearly already sound asleep. He looked like he hadn't rested well in a long time.
Could it be... he's been having insomnia?
At this thought, a strange emotion welled up in Lily's heart.
She sighed softly and closed her eyes, too.
David slept deeply.
This was the soundest he had slept in a long time.
Ever since he and Lily started sleeping in separate rooms, he'd been suffering from insomnia.
Every night lying in bed, his mind would always think of Lily - her appearance, her voice, her smile...
Then he would toss and turn, unable to fall asleep.
But tonight was different.
Breathing in her familiar scent, listening to her breathing, he felt his whole body relax.
In his drowsiness, he had a dream.
In the dream, he was back on that rainy night years ago.
He was injured, covered in blood, and collapsed at a street corner.
The cold rain beat down on him, nearly making him lose all feeling.
Just when he thought he was going to die, a gentle voice spoke.
"Are you okay?"
He struggled to lift his head and saw a girl.
The girl stood before him, holding an umbrella, her face shrouded in shadow, impossible to see clearly.
But he could see the ring she wore on her hand - the same design as his.
"Don't be afraid, I'll save you," the girl said.
She helped him up, took him to a safe place, cleaned his wounds, gave him medicine...
"You'll be fine. Get some good sleep, and when you wake up tomorrow, it won't hurt anymore."
Her voice was as gentle as if she were coaxing a child.
David felt himself surrounded by warmth, that sense of security making him completely relax.
He slept a very long, very deep sleep.
When he woke up again, the sky was already getting light.
Morning light filtered through the gaps in the curtains into the room, coating everything with a soft golden glow.
David groggily opened his eyes and found himself holding a soft, warm body.
