Chapter 152
Jeremy
Sarah was knelt down, Dylan’s head resting on her knee, he was still unconscious, still fighting for his life, but she was doing her best, working as quickly as she could before the blood loss took him from us.
Fuck, I hope he doesn’t die. I’m close with Dylan, with both the twins. I’m not sure how I would cope if either of them died, let alone how Sarah would feel. They are her mates just as much as I am.
In the beginning I hated them, but that was only because I was jealous of them. They had time to work on their bonds before I was even in the picture, but neither the twins nor Sarah made me feel like I was any less deserving of her love. We have built a family together, all of us.
If Dylan dies, we not only lose someone we all care about, but our children lose a dad. How would I even begin to explain that to Jacob? He adores Dylan, they even have a secret handshake that I could never get the hang of. Their bond is beautiful, and I don’t want to be the one to tell that little boy that he’s never coming back.
“Sarah, how much time do you need?” I urge her to answer quickly with my eyes, I need to know how long I have to hold the enemy back.
I need to know how long it’ll take her to save him so I can protect them both, I’ve never been the best fighter, but I know how to kill. I’ve done it before, and I will do it again if it means protecting the people I care about.
Dylan is pale, too pale. I just hope all hope isn’t lost.
Sarah doesn’t look up when she finally answers me, her voice barely above a whisper, “I don’t know. Just hold them back for as long as you can.”
I may not know much about her power, but I do know that whatever she is doing is going to take a lot of her energy from her. She may not be able to fight after this, she may not even be able to stand.
But I will hold them back for her, for Dylan. I have to.
I won’t lose this second family I have been given. I lost the first, I won’t lose this one.
“I’ll hold them back.” I say, my voice tight. “Just concentrate on saving him.”
She nods, her words dying in her throat as Dylan makes a choking sound. She’s no longer looking at me, her eyes are back on him, only on him, and right now, that’s exactly where I want them to be.
I turn to Drake, almost pulling him back to his feet so he can help me fend off the wolves currently running towards us, but he looks exhausted. His eyes are on his brother, his chest heaving with barely concealed panic.
He’s in no state to help me.
I turn to Matthew, and he looks as nervous as I feel, his lips pressed into a thin line.
I step closer to him, lowering my voice. “We have to do this.” I tell him. “This pack is counting on us.”
He looks from the twins to me, torn between being there for them and doing what he needs to do to keep them safe.
But then he surprises me, he cracks his knuckles and smiles, “let’s take these dickheads down.”
I smile back, feeling a surge of energy and hope was over me. “No surrender, no mercy.” I say coldly. “They won’t give us any leeway, why should we give it to them?”
Matthew smiles even wider, “they don’t deserve our mercy, we do this for Dylan and for all those we have lost.”
Matthew has never been a violent man, not from what I have seen, but he is fiercely protective of those he cares about, and that’s pretty much the same thing when you are faced with a situation like this.
It is kill or be killed, and we are not about to lay down and die.
I turn to the men gathered around us, all of them waiting silently for their orders, they’ve heard us speak, but now they need to hear it again. They need to know that they can kill them all.
Thirty men, all of them running towards us with one goal; kill the Alpha Queen. But we won’t let that happen.
We are going to protect her with our lives.
“Long live the Alpha Queen!” I shout, loud enough for all the men around me to hear, including those ready to kill us.
“Long live the Queen!” My men shout back, Matthew joining in the chant.
I step forward, taking a deep breath, “kill as many as you can, protect your queen and the twins.”
They all shift without another word, rushing into battle without a second thought, some of them will die, that’s inevitable in war. But all those who lay their lives down for the queen will be met by the moon goddess herself when they cross over to the other side.
She’ll welcome them into her home, into the pack lands of forever, I’m sure of it, and they probably know it too. They know they are dying for someone who cares about their safety and happiness.
She has protected the people of this pack multiple times, now it is their turn to do the same thing for her, and they are more than willing.
I shift into my wolf, my beast shaking out his fur, ready for the fight of his life. He’s proud my wolf, but he’s also strong and smart. He knows how to kill quick and easy, without prolonging the problem.
Some see that as weak, but I see it as efficiency.
“I could take them all out on my own to protect Sarah.” He growls in my head, “but I will allow them to fight for their queen.”
I laugh silently, he’s always been full of himself, but this is new. Normally he’s wise enough to admit when he’s bit off more than he can chew.
“Don’t worry about anyone but us.” I tell him sternly “we don’t want her to have to heal another one of her mates.”
I feel his agreement through the bond, healing one large wolf is hard work, two would be almost impossible after all the strength she has already used. She needs help, not another wolf she needs to bring back from the brink of death.
He runs with the others, making it to the front just as bodies collide and blood paints the sky crimson.
War is here, and we are not going to lose.
