Chapter 148
Drake's pov
The enemy wolves have come, they are outside the walls, threatening to destroy everything we have built, but they don’t know that we expected them. They don’t know that we’re ready to fight.
We have the moon goddess on our side, surely, that means we can’t lose? I hope that Sarah was right, I hope that we can do this.
I have all the faith in the world for my mate, but almost none for the moon goddess, she does nothing but watch her people suffer at the hands of tyrants. She could help, she could save her children from being torn apart, but she doesn’t. instead, she chooses to watch and wait, wait for someone else to save them for her.
The same applies to today, she’ll sit back and watch our people fight and die, but she won’t intervene. According to her apostles, it isn’t her place to save us. But she could, she could easily use just a fraction of her power to actually help her children.
But she will not, it became our job to protect ourselves long ago, long before my own father was born, and we have done a damn good job.
The strong protect the weak, it is how it has been for a long time.
And today, we will protect the children and those who cannot fight, we will crush our enemy and make sure that they never return.
Yes, our people will die, but today, they are dying for a cause greater than themselves. They are fighting for their Queen and their Luna, we all are.
She is the rightful heir to the throne, and we will make sure that she keeps that throne.
“I hope your ready brother.” I turn to Dylan, stretching out my back as he shows people where to go. “This isn’t going to be easy.”
He glances at me, his eyes dark, dark with the shade of his wolf, “Nothing in this world is easy, brother.” He quips. “But today, we fight for our children and the children of all the people who follow us.”
I nod, agreeing with him with my whole chest. “And we fight for our Queen, our Sarah.” I say, stepping closer to him and lowering my voice. “Take no prisoners, not until Sarah orders it. We kill as many of them as we can.”
My brother stares at me for a second too long, “What changed your mind?” He asks. “Just yesterday you wanted to save as many as you could.”
“The young ones, I want to save.” I say, my voice a little softer than before. “But those who blindly follow their alphas for money will all die.”
Dylan smiles, “I never knew you had a big heart, not until this war began.” He admits, rubbing the back of his neck. “But since the war began, you’ve shown me how much heart you have, and I’m impressed, I used to think you wanted nothing but money and women.”
“I was like that.” I say with a laugh, “But I left him behind in our old lands, I knew there was no place for him where I needed to go.”
“I hope you two are ready, there’s a fuck load of those fuckers out there.” Matthew says with a smirk, walking to stand beside us.
Matthew has always been loyal, we have counted on him more times than I can count, and he has always come through for us. He loves Sarah like a little sister, and I know he’ll do everything he can to help her and keep her safe whilst we are fighting them off.
“You remember your job, don’t you?” Dylan asks, his hands shaking slightly.
He always gets nervous before a fight, but he’s stronger than he thinks. Much stronger.
“I remember, I protect the queen, even if that means laying down and dying for her.” Matthew smiles, a cheeky hint in his eyes, “But I won’t go to hell without taking some of them with me.”
“We expect nothing else, brother.” I say, clapping him on the shoulder, “If something happens to either of us, promise you’ll not tell Sarah until the battle is over, we can’t have her losing sight of what she needs to do.”
Matthew looks massively uncomfortable, “I don’t know about that man, she’ll rip off my head if I lie to her about something like that.”
“You are not lying to her; you just don’t tell her.” Dylan says, his tone much more convincing than mine. “If you tell her, we lose, because she will stop fighting to try and save us.”
“She should try and save you.” Matthew argues, his tone hard. “You guys are her mates, she needs you, and so does your daughter.”
“We are not going to be able to convince you, are we?” I ask, already knowing the answer even without asking. “Not even if it is for the good of our people?”
“I care about our people as much as you do, but Sarah can do amazing things, and bringing people back from the brink of death is one of them.” He says voice like ice. “And if there is a chance, she can bring your stupid arses back to life, I’m fucking taking it. There’s no victory without the alpha twins.”
I laugh; I can’t help it. He’s always been protective of us, but this right here is a new level I’ve not seen before. But then again, we weren’t fighting for our lives back then. Today, we are.
“Fine.” I say, faking anger. “Don’t tell her.”
I should be angry; I should chew his ear off. But I won’t, his anger and persistence over the situation shows that he cares, and I can’t be angry at him for that.
Jeremy comes jogging over, his eyes hard. “All the kids and those who can’t fight are in the bunker; the rest are coming here to hold the line.” He says, “Sarah will be here in a moment, she’s saying goodbye to the kids.”
I turn to him, my heart aching for our mate. She doesn’t know if she’ll see the kids again, but all those in that bunker know not to tell anyone who Jacob and Amelia are, if we lose and they are found, the children are omegas. That’s the lie.
“Is Jake with the children?” I ask, hoping that he was.
No one will protect my children like him, especially because he has his own boy around the same age as Jacob. Amelia is a princess, but no one needs to know that. To everyone outside the bunker, she’s just another warrior’s child, not the alphas daughter.
“Yes.” Jeremy says, “and he knows the lie, he’s going to claim them are their own should things go south.”
I nod; that’s a good idea.
A warrior comes running towards us, “Alpha’s they are here.” He pants, “they’re breaking through the defences.”
The battle is about to start, lets just hope it ends with us standing and not them.
