Chapter 88: Chase You Again
“That… that is not the important issue! Wendy is not—”
George remembered that this was all new information for Sarah. “Oh yes. The DNA test results said as much. We ran a few to be sure.” He hummed.
“I don’t understand why.”
“Only Vera can tell you that. But I presume you wouldn’t want to ask her why she tricked your parents into divorcing,” George said sympathetically.
“Thank you for your insight, Mr. Colton. I will keep these in mind as I move forward.” She paused and looked at George’s hopeful expression and gave him a polite smile. “I understand you want to put in a good word for your son, but I am firm in my decision.”
“You have already made the decision?”
Sarah nodded. “I have also made the decision to take William’s help and root Vera out of the company. But I do not plan on being at the helm of Stone and Brothers myself,” she said frankly.
“That is understandable. But it is a shame. I believe you would have restored the company to what Phillip really wanted it to be,” he sighed.
“I’m sorry” was the only thing she could say.
She heard another knock on the door and walked over to it. This time, it really was William. He held a few packets of food in his hand. Sarah looked at them and shook her head. “Come in,” she said, surprising William.
He had thought she would draw the line and ask him to talk in the hotel lobby or book a meeting room within the hotel. But he was delighted that she had invited him in. He brushed past her before she could change her mind and was about to keep the packets down when he noticed his father seated inside the room.
“What are you doing here?” he questioned, his voice hard. He thought that his father had once again come to sow discord or tell Sarah to keep away from him.
“I was here to meet my friend’s daughter and set some things straight,” George said casually.
Despite William taking over, the rift between the father and son had not been mended.
“You shouldn’t have come. You don’t know anything…” William whispered so that Sarah couldn’t hear.
George raised a brow. “Don’t I? I do know I came to put in a good word for you and explain the misunderstandings away… But it seems the little girl has no intention of getting back with you.”
William’s expression softened but the pain in his eyes was evident. No matter how much he denied his feelings, he had to face the truth. He really wanted Sarah to run into his arms and them to be happy again.
William cleared his throat. “We are about to discuss business.” He looked at his watch and commented, “Don’t you have a yoga session soon? You should be leaving.”
Sarah heard this bit and held back her laugh. “Mr. Colton, your assistant is waiting outside for you,” she said.
George stood up and nodded. “I will head out. Sarah, it was wonderful meeting you. I hope you succeed in your endeavors,” he said with a hint of pride before leaving.
William saw his dad off. When he closed the door, he looked perplexed. “He has never spoken to me in that tone,” he confessed.
Sarah shrugged. “I am not his son, so…” She looked at all the food and sighed. “Let’s have the food here. The meeting room I booked doesn’t allow outside food. Then we can shift there to talk about business.”
William had thought wrong. He did know Sarah well and she was good at making boundaries. At the same time, he hadn’t changed from being a manipulative bastard either. He didn’t protest and simply started to unpack the food so that both of them could enjoy it.
“Let’s eat. I am starving.”
This one sentence could melt the rock on Sarah’s chest every time.
William was sly, though. He broached every topic that they would in the meeting room while they enjoyed their food. The talk of sneakily giving one of Sarah’s uncles the DNA result to throw Wendy out of the company and diminish Vera’s power was the first on the agenda. He also revealed that a lot of people who supported Vera had been slowly weeded out of the company.
So far, Vera had not noticed.
“I have bought shares myself,” Sarah informed. “It is better to stay under the radar if you don’t transfer the shares you have to me. We don’t want to startle the snake before it is time.” She paused. “As for the criminal investigation into her commercial and violent crimes, there is enough evidence to take her into custody and be questioned.”
“Now, the only thing remaining is to turn Marcus Mendez against Vera so that she has no lawyer to fall back on,” William added thoughtfully.
As long as a wily fox like Mendez was not on Vera’s side, everything would be fine.
“Do you have a plan for that?” Sarah asked. Because she was still mildly scared of Mendez. She was powerful in her own right, but the little girl who had been threatened to be killed was still present inside her heart. “The shareholder meeting is in four days.”
William nodded. “The timeline is a bit tight, but I think we will manage,” he started. “As for Mendez, I have started working on him. Once we get the will, you can walk into the board meeting and oust her.”
Sarah tilted her head in confusion. “I am assuming that you won’t tell me what you have planned to get Mendez on our side?”
William shrugged. “A man has to keep his secrets.”
“Fair,” she said calmly. “But don’t run yourself down because of it. I can take over without your help, too.”
She had already found the record of Phillip Stone and her mother’s marriage. She had a right to some of his shares as a legal heir. Because no one knew Phillip had left a will. And with Wendy’s new identity, most people would have a problem with her having shares but not Sarah. This was all conjecture, though. Having the Will would be the best-case scenario.
“I don’t mind,” William said in a low voice.
“You should be the businessman you claimed to be. Don’t spend more energy than the returns you will get,” Sarah said.
William knew that she was trying to put as much distance as she could between them. And he couldn’t stand it. “I changed my mind,” he blurted out, unable to control his urge.
Sarah raised a brow. “You don’t want to help me anymore?”
William shook his head. “No. I am done pretending like I don’t care about you. I do. I can’t stand that I have to act like I don’t want to be with you every second of the day. I want you in my arms and I want you to tell me your plans in the same way that I can tell you everything I am scheming.” He shuddered. “I hate that we have come to this. I might respect your decision but I don’t understand why we need to break up. I don’t understand why…”
Sarah gulped. “William, I can—”
“Don’t. I don’t need your rejection. I am going to find a way to be with you and I am going to be the evil bastard you think I am. You’ve already told me your plan so there is nothing you can do to stop me from finding where you are every moment of the day.” He stared at her with determination. “Sarah Mitch… Cera Stone… Whoever you are… I am going to pursue you all over again. Even if you are not either of them. I am going to pursue you until the end of the universe.”
