Chapter 75: What Happened To Her
Upon getting such a juicy piece of information, Timothy was not in a state to entertain William and Sarah. He quickly took his leave but only after announcing that their bill would be added to his tab.
William scoffed and waited for Timothy to close the door. He pulled Sarah closer and pressed a small kiss on the corner of her lips. “I didn’t think it would be that easy.”
Sarah rolled her eyes. “No matter how competent a woman is, when she is accompanying her lover, she is always seen as a gossipy and useless person. That is just how our world works.”
William arched his brow. “And you used that very well.”
Sarah gave him a bright smile and to reward him for his compliment pulled him into a passionate kiss. “Time to head home,” she whispered. She pulled away and brushed her thumb against his lip. The bright red lipstick she wore had smudged over his mouth, making him look comical.
He reached up to grab her wrist, his eyes burning with desire. “Let it be,” he said huskily. “No one will see it. And if they do, they will know who I belong to.”
Sarah didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. All her plans to be the secret girlfriend would be thrown out if she was seduced by William so easily. She shook her head to drive the lecherous thoughts away and kept wiping. “Why doesn’t it go away?” she grumbled, making William chuckle. She reached into her purse and pulled out a wet tissue before harshly rubbing on his skin.
William hissed.
“Serves you right,” she reproached for laughing at her expense.
When she was satisfied with the lack of lipstick on his face, she sighed and discarded the tissue. She got up and extended her hand to him.
“Time to head home,” she repeated.
William took her extended hand and allowed her to guide him out of the club. There were a few people who tried to stop William but he shook his head at them.

Timothy was in a rush as he dialed Senator Barn’s number. It seemed like hours had passed by the time the call went through.
“What is it?” Barn asked gruffly.
“I got the two of them drunk. The girl slipped up and told me who the informant is,” Timothy started excitedly.
Barn scoffed. “You think they would let you know so easily?”
Timothy huffed. “Uncle, they didn’t tell me anything. I deduced it. The girl slipped up and asked about your campaign manager and William just gestured her to stop. I was lucky enough to catch it. She changed her tune immediately.”
Sarah didn’t even know this was how their little act looked in the eyes of an outsider.
“The campaign manager?” Barn sounded more awake than before. Timothy had his full attention. “You’ve been tricked, boy.”
Timothy didn’t respond for a while. “I can only give you information that I get from them. I am not Sherlock Holmes,” he grumbled.
“If you are just that useless just let it be and don’t make the situation worse!” Barn barked before hanging up.
Timothy stared at the phone in shock for a minute before he helplessly went back inside the club. It was nothing a little alcohol couldn’t cure.
On the other side of town, Barn looked downright livid. “That nasty boy. He is so easily tricked and that Colton boy took him for a ride.”
Vera simply chuckled and wrapped her long hair in a bun as she slid off the sofa. “You get agitated over the smallest of things. Didn’t you send your nephew to William knowing that he would mess up?”
Yes, Senator Barn had wanted to send Timothy to William for a couple of reasons. One of them was to get fragments of information he could piece together and find a weak spot to attack. Another was to create havoc on William’s side. Right now, he wasn’t sure if the same tactic had been used on him and he was the one suffering for Timothy’s lack of intellect.
“The brat had the audacity to tell me that my campaign manager betrayed me. Like that man could go against me. I have his life in my hands.” Barn scoffed and gulped down the glass of water.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he was playing both sides,” Vera said nonchalantly.
Barn’s head snapped in her direction. “What do you mean?” he hissed. “He is a trusted aid. He brought me to power with those schemes of his.”
“Always fear the kingmaker… They have made a king once… what is stopping them from changing teams and helping someone else?” Vera started. “Don’t you remember how he stabbed his best friend in the back and supported your political career all those years ago? He has it in him to betray others.”
Barn gritted his teeth. “That is exactly what Colton wants me to believe. He is trying to drive a wedge between my people and me.”
He was right, in a sense. But there was no merit in leaving the seed of doubt lingering. It could fester and cause problems in the future.
Barn waved his hand. “Ask Mendez to follow him around and gather information. I want solid proof either way.”
Vera threw her head back and laughed. “You’re not absolutely stupid, then. I warn you, though. This is definitely a trick.”
“Then why did you instigate me?” Barn asked coldly.
Vera shrugged and picked up her cellphone. She dialed Mendez.
The call went through immediately.
“What can I help you with?” Marcus questioned with a hint of boredom. He was stuck in the office, taking care of the dirty laundry of others. Meanwhile, his wife was at home and on the verge of divorcing him. So, he was not happy about this late-night call.
“I need you to find out everything you can about someone.”
Mendez knew the ritual. But he raised his brow when he heard the name of Senator Barn’s confidant and campaign manager being mentioned in the next sentence. The earlier boredom evaporated and he sat straighter.
He had already texted his private detective.
“I am already on it,” he said quickly.
“And did you find out about that girl called Sarah Mitch?” Vera asked. She wasn’t in a hurry to find out, but because she was on the call, she suddenly felt the urge to ask.
“About her. I have found quite a bit about her after she became an adult but things before that are blurred. Like someone wiped her history away at some point.” Mendez was suspicious on this point.
“Not a simple girl, then.”
“She is an orphan and completed her education by doing part-time jobs and getting scholarships. No doubt she is a good student… but not the best.”
“Like she is hiding something… or from someone,” Vera finished his thought.
“It is indeed strange.”
“And where did she meet William? Is it at college like Wendy believes?”
Mendez didn’t speak for a moment. “There was mention of them sleeping together after her birthday but I am not sure about the details.”
Vera laughed in surprise. “This girl continues to surprise me. Sleeping with a man within a few hours of knowing him. She has a good sight for men…” she trailed off. She had to admit Sarah’s speed was faster than hers.
Mendez didn’t comment on this issue.
“Keep digging about her, too. Anything you find. Anyone who knows her from her childhood.” Suddenly a thought crossed Vera’s mind.
“Marcus, do you remember Casandra Cavanaugh? What happened to that pesky daughter of hers again? You never did tell me how you handled her.”
