Isabela
The night stretched on like an unbroken thread, each second heavier than the last. I paced the living room, my mind racing with worst-case scenarios. Gabriel hadn’t called, and every moment of silence felt like a blow to my resolve. Clara had stayed late, helping to keep Miguel entertained, but now he was asleep, and I was left alone with my thoughts.
The security system’s low hum was the only sound in the house. I found myself staring at the monitors Gabriel had set up, the live feeds from the facility flashing in black and white. The breach had been chaotic, and though Gabriel’s team was highly trained, André’s reach was proving to be as vast as we feared.
Finally, the front door opened, and Gabriel walked in. His presence was like a surge of relief, but it was tempered by the grim expression on his face. His jacket was rumpled, his tie loose, and his eyes carried the weight of the night’s events.
“What happened?” I asked, rushing toward him.
Gabriel set down the briefcase he was carrying and ran a hand through his hair. “They got to Raul.”
My stomach dropped. “What do you mean? Is he…?”
“Alive,” Gabriel said quickly, though his tone didn’t ease my worry. “But barely. André’s men roughed him up before we could secure him again. They were trying to send a message.”
“What kind of message?”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened. “That no one is untouchable. Not even under my protection.”
The next morning, the house was quiet. Gabriel was in his office, poring over the reports from the attack, and I found myself in the kitchen, absently stirring a cup of coffee. Clara arrived early, her presence a small comfort in the midst of the chaos.
“How are you holding up?” she asked, her tone gentle as she sat across from me.
I shrugged. “It’s hard to feel like we’re making progress when André keeps staying one step ahead.”
Clara reached across the table, her hand covering mine. “You and Gabriel are doing everything you can. That’s all anyone can ask for.”
Her words were kind, but they didn’t ease the knot of frustration in my chest. I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were missing something, some crucial piece that would tip the scales in our favor.
Gabriel emerged from his office later that morning, his phone in hand and a look of determination on his face.
“I need you to hear this,” he said, gesturing for me to follow him.
We sat in his study as he played a recording. It was Raul’s voice, shaky and strained, recounting the events of the previous night.
“They knew exactly where to find me,” Raul said. “They… they mentioned someone on the inside. Someone close to Castellano.”
My breath caught. “A mole?”
Gabriel nodded, his expression dark. “It explains how André’s men breached the facility so easily. Someone’s been feeding him information.”
“Who?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“I don’t know yet,” Gabriel admitted. “But I’ll find out. No one betrays me and gets away with it.”
The anger in his voice was cold and controlled, but it was enough to send a shiver down my spine. Whoever the mole was, they had made a dangerous enemy in Gabriel Castellano.
The revelation of a traitor within Gabriel’s ranks added a new layer of tension to an already fraught situation. Laura arrived later that day to discuss the implications, her usual confidence replaced with a wary edge.
“If there’s a mole, we need to act quickly,” she said, her voice low. “The longer they’re in play, the more damage they can do.”
“I’m aware,” Gabriel replied, his tone sharp. “I’ve already started vetting my team. But we can’t let this distract us from the bigger picture.”
“André is the bigger picture,” I added. “If we take him down, the mole loses their leverage.”
Laura nodded. “True. But we can’t underestimate the damage they can do in the meantime.”
Gabriel’s eyes met mine, a silent understanding passing between us. The fight was becoming more complicated by the day, but we couldn’t afford to falter now.
That evening, as Gabriel and I sat together in the living room, the weight of the day pressed heavily on us both. Miguel was asleep upstairs, his presence a constant reminder of why we were fighting so hard.
“Do you think we’ll find the mole?” I asked, breaking the silence.
Gabriel nodded, his gaze fixed on the fire crackling in the hearth. “I have to. If I don’t, everything we’ve built is at risk.”
I reached for his hand, lacing my fingers with his. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”
He turned to me, a rare softness in his expression. “I don’t say this enough, but I don’t know what I’d do without you, Isabela. You’re the reason I keep pushing forward.”
His words sent a warmth through me, momentarily melting away the fear and uncertainty. In that moment, I knew we would face whatever came next side by side.
But even as I fell asleep that night, nestled in Gabriel’s arms, the shadows of doubt lingered. The battle with André was far from over, and the revelation of a traitor among us had fractured the fragile sense of security we’d built. The fissures were widening, and I could only hope we were strong enough to withstand what was coming.
