Chapter 84
Dominic’s POV
The apartment was quiet that night, too quiet, with only the faint hum of the city below seeping through the windows. I had been on edge all evening, following threads of suspicion that had been nagging at me for weeks.
Tyler’s manipulations had been subtle, infuriatingly clever, but tonight, I had found something a small, irrefutable piece of proof that confirmed every fear I’d held.
I held the folder in my hands, my pulse quickening. Documents, receipts, photos, even snippets of a voicemail where Tyler’s voice was too smug, too casual revealed his attempts to twist Ethan’s perception of me.
He’d been laying traps, nudging Ethan with small lies, making me seem controlling, overbearing, even cruel. It was all there, neatly compiled, like a roadmap of deceit.
I paced, thinking about how to confront Ethan. I didn’t want to scare him or make him doubt his own judgment. Tyler had poisoned his mind carefully. I needed strategy, timing, precision. And I had none of that if Tyler caught wind of what I had.
Then, as if on cue, my phone buzzed. A message from Tyler, innocuous enough at first glance, but I knew better. “Ethan’s upset. Maybe he needs some space. Don’t stress too much. 😉” The emoji, the casual tone was classic Tyler, planting guilt before I even had a chance to act.
I clenched my jaw. Of course he’s already working his angle.
I set the folder down, my mind racing, when my memory betrayed me, drifting back years. Tyler’s voice, his expression, the same calculating, insistent energy it all came rushing back.
I saw him as a child, small but determined, always hovering around Ethan. Always watching. Always waiting for any moment Ethan might turn to someone else like me to seek guidance, protection, or attention.
He had been obsessed with Ethan for as long as I could remember. I had entered their lives later but Tyler had already claimed his position as “Ethan’s closest companion.” And when I became more than a friend, when Ethan started relying on me, Tyler’s quiet envy transformed into something darker, more deliberate.
I could see it now in retrospect. Every slight he had directed at me, every subtle dig at my patience, my decisions, my interactions with Ethan it wasn’t impulsive. It was meticulously plotted over years.
The hallway incidents, the “innocent” questions to Ethan about my decisions, even the small notes and texts planted to make me seem unreasonable, they were all carefully orchestrated.
The flashback only made my blood boil further. I remembered his childish whispers to Ethan: “Why do you listen to him? Doesn’t he treat you like you’re… lesser?” Small words, whispered in hallways, repeated over years, conditioning Ethan to doubt, to question. And Tyler had grown bolder as we all grew older. Now, he had his sights set on destabilizing us entirely.
I shook my head, snapping back to the present. Tyler had twisted history and manipulated perception for far too long. And the worst part? Ethan’s trust in me was already fraying, just enough that Tyler could insert his poison.
The thought of confronting Ethan filled me with unease. I didn’t want to overwhelm him with the truth and have him retreat into confusion or fear. Tyler had made sure he was primed for that reaction. Every phone call, every innocent-seeming comment, every manipulated “coincidence” was aimed at eroding my credibility.
I grabbed my coat and headed out, intent on intercepting Tyler before he could do any more damage tonight. My mind replayed the small victories Tyler thought he had scored over me, over Ethan.
He underestimated me, as always. He didn’t know how long I had been watching, how meticulously I had begun piecing together the evidence.
Arriving at the café where Tyler had suggested Ethan meet him “to talk things out,” I stayed hidden across the street, phone in hand, recording the scene. Tyler’s smirk was in place, the casual charm dialed up to ten.
He was guiding Ethan through some story about me being controlling, manipulative, unfair a narrative designed to plant doubt. Every laugh, every shake of the head, every seemingly innocent comment was aimed at shaping Ethan’s perception.
I caught a phrase, subtle, but unmistakable: “He doesn’t really care about what you want, you know. I just… worry about you.” Tyler’s voice, soft and insistent, a weapon in disguise. He was counting on Ethan’s trust in him to outweigh his trust in me.
I felt my hands tighten around the phone. Not this time.
Back in my apartment later, I poured over the evidence again. Receipts of gifts Tyler “borrowed” to make himself seem thoughtful, messages twisted to make me seem unreasonable, photos strategically chosen to mislead. Everything pointed to a single goal: to make Ethan question me, to weaken my bond with him, and to reclaim the position he had always believed was his by right.
I leaned back in my chair and thought of Tyler as a child again. Small, clever, obsessed with control. I had witnessed it firsthand, even before understanding the extent of his ambition.
I remembered the countless games he had played turning friends against each other, subtly undermining anyone he perceived as a threat to his claim over Ethan’s attention. Now, years later, he had escalated his game.
The thought of confronting him directly crossed my mind, but I knew better. Tyler thrived on chaos. Confrontation on my terms might backfire. The next step had to be precise, timed, and undeniable.
I would gather more proof, corroborate every manipulation, and then bring Ethan into the fold carefully, showing him the full extent of Tyler’s obsession and deceit. It was time for the truth to come to light, and I would make sure it did, before Tyler could twist another story in his favor.
For the first time in weeks, I allowed myself a small measure of satisfaction. Tyler had underestimated how far I would go to protect Ethan. The chessboard was set. I had all the pieces I needed. And when the right moment came, Tyler’s carefully curated façade would crumble.
And Ethan… Ethan would finally see the truth, without question.
The thought steadied me, anchored me. Tyler had always believed he was untouchable. He had always thought his obsession, his planning, his manipulations would secure Ethan for him. But he had forgotten one key thing: I wasn’t about to lose what mattered most not now, not ever.
