Chapter 31
Greg was packaging some important documents in preparation for mailing when his phone rang. He was sitting at his desk in his Lekki office which he shared with another solicitor. There was no caller ID, so he assumed it was one of his contacts from his side hustle.
“What’s up?” He said into the receiver when he answered the call.
“Call off your dog,” the caller said in a menacing tone.
Greg didn’t need an introduction because he recognized the voice instantly. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
“Yes, you do. Call off your dog or I will send both of you to the pound for a very long time. Don’t mess with me and I won’t mess with you or your business.”
Greg hated being threatened. He wasn’t a victim, and he wasn’t going to cower under some obscure threat or run off and hide when he hadn’t done anything wrong.
“Look, I don’t know what you’re pissed off about, but whatever it is, I’ll suggest you take it up with the dog, not me.”
“I wasn’t expecting you to back down easily, so I am prepared to tackle you. All I need is for you to give me an excuse to come after you and I will.”
“Why don’t you just stop speaking in parables and say what you really have to say. I haven’t done anything wrong, and I don’t owe you shit. If you have a problem with my partner, just say so but don’t try to rope into a mess that I am not a part of.”
“Consider yourself warned.”
The call ended.
What the hell is this? Greg thought, fuming. How dare that bastard call him out of the blues to threaten him like that? He stood up and paced back and forth in the small office, thinking.
Greg was a clever guy, and he knew enough to know that it would be stupid of him to take this person’s threat lightly. He was the one who had a lot to lose—his career and his reputation were at stake. These were not the sort of things to joke with, not after how far he’d come. He’d clawed his way out of the dingy ghetto of Ajegunle and made something out of his life after years of struggling, and he’d be damned if he let all of his hard work go down the drain because of his partner’s pettiness. No, it wasn’t worth losing everything for.
He grabbed the documents from his desk and made for the exit. It was time for him to call off the dog and save his neck.
