Chapter 128: New Protectors

Emma

“Pardon, that is impossible–”

“For someone who got into a relationship with your son, not minding her status, I do not think anything is impossible with her. Plus, look at her father, she must have taken after him in…whatever he is.” Fiona cuts Mrs Anderson off before she can finish speaking with the officers. It was the first time she got off, resting against the tree and approaching us. She had a sinister look on her face, the one that confirmed my guess that she had something to do with this.

“Shut it Fiona,” Harietta stated firmly, though her voice was cold and filled with firmness; she wasn’t scolding her daughter.

Fiona shrugged, and Mr Anderson continued.

“Have you gotten any proof that she is involved in what you claimed?”

Before the officer nodded, it had already clicked where this was all coming from, and now I doubted it was Fiona; certainly, it had everything to do with Peter. He must have done this, framing me up, even at the stake of his own business, perhaps, he just paid them to have me take the cross, while he continued dealing with his business.

“Peter Anderson has been caught, the warehouse was searched, and we found Ms Taylor as one of the employees. Everyone stared back at me, aside from Liam, who stepped forward and Harietta, who followed without hesitation, she had even walked before Liam, directly to the officer.

“Listen here, uniform man, my daughter here has nothing to do with whatever shit is going on, so get back and tell your authorities to provide solid evidence.”

Grace and Selene were the ones holding on to me now. I had even forgotten they were around until Grace whispered, “What’s going on, Emma?” I couldn’t bring myself to answer as I just watched everyone talking.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, we can not do that. We would need answers to some questions from her, and then her trial will determine the rest. I will appreciate your cooperation.”

“Why don’t y’all just let the officers do their job?” Fiona rolled her eyes. This time, Harietta yelled. “One more word from you, Fiona, and I’m getting you out of the family register. Don’t you dare say another word.” Now that seemed to have shaken her a lot because Fiona stood still with wide eyes, and Haritta didn’t bat another eye at her.

“What if I have proof she was coerced into working there, and my cousin also blackmailed her?” The officer at the forefront knitted his brows, then turned to the colleagues behind, who all nodded while the one by his side pulled out a jotter.

“Then we’d be glad to have that.” The sound of something hard falling to the ground resonated through the air, as all attention turned to Fiona, who was marching out.

“In exchange, she has nowhere near the cell. I will see the authorities with my son and give out statement.”

Even Liam, Derek, and I turned to Mr Anderson in surprise. This was the same man who sent his men to turn our house into a mess when he found out I was dating his son, yet he’s willing to help me.

“I can’t–”

“I cannot have my soon-to-be in-law in a cell; besides, she just lost a loved one. So you either take the option given or you would have to go empty-handed.” Mr Anderson cut off the officer, while my heart skipped a beat at how he addressed me. Suddenly, everyone seemed to be on my side, which was scaring me. I only had Grandmother, but now she’s gone, and now I thought I’d be alone in the world; I have the people I thought hated me the most helping me.

But having Liam go without me didn’t sit right, besides, I did work for Peter in the warehouse, and a part of me knew something illegal was going on, so I made a move to speak, but I had caught Mrs Anderson’s gaze, and she gently shook her head, gesturing with her hands for me to take a breath instead.

Before I could turn back to the officers, they were already walking away, aside from Liam, who returned to leave a kiss on my cheek.

“Don’t worry about anything, this is my family’s fight, I’ll return soon.” That was all he said before he walked up to his father, as they walked together to the Van. while the officers went to their respective cars, leaving us here. My heart heaved as they drove off, and I wasn’t sure if that was the right thing to do. But Mrs Anderson had walked up to me the minute they were out of sight.

“You should finalise the burial and speak to your Mother. I’m sure they know what they are doing. If you were to have gone with the officers, the people at wrong will never get the penalty they deserve, and everything will be blamed on you.” She said so softly, a tone she hadn’t used for me in a long time. I didn’t know how to feel about it.

“We have something to discuss about, but I’ll leave you with your mum today.” She said and turned to leave, the remaining guards left escorting her to another car, as they drove her away, leaving me with Grace, Selena, Derek, Harietta and I. I couldn’t tell if Fiona had gone or was lurking around, but she was nowhere in sight.

“We’ll go get something and be back soon.” Said Derek, who was pulling Selena away. While Grace insisted on staying with me, I was grateful for that.

“If you want, I’ll leave also, just let me help you out with the rest. I’ll also love to make sure Granny is laid properly to rest.” Harietta stated. And I wanted to refuse, to chase her away as always, but I didn't have the energy to.

“As you do, explain everything I need to know.”
