Chapter 121: The Reclamation

Maya’s POV

The smoky air inside the concrete vault is vibrating with the deafening roar of the security sirens and the groans of the two guards Adrian just leveled, but while Adrian is turning his head toward the closed service elevator doors to track his father's escape route, my eyes lock instantly onto the middle section of the steel work table where Silas left the second large leather bag of bearer bonds sitting right beside the main accounting computer. I do not stay hidden behind the protective row of server racks or wait for Adrian to give me a tactical clearance note, instead sprinting straight across the open concrete aisle while the flashing red emergency lights cast long shadows over the metal frames, and my hands wrap firmly around the thick leather handles of the bag before Silas's groaning bodyguards can even lift their faces off the floorboards.

"Maya, what are you doing out in the center aisle, get back into the shadow of the cabinets because I told you to stay completely flat until we verified that those men were completely incapacitated!" Adrian roars, his large frame spinning around instantly as he hears my boots scraping against the steel floorplates, his hand reaching out to grab my shoulder to pull me back toward the safety of the rear exit corridor.

"I am snatching the physical bond certificates that Silas stole from my mother's estate, Adrian, because he left this second bag right on the table when he ran for the freight lift, and I am not going to leave millions in family assets sitting in this basement for the local authorities to confiscate under a federal sealing order," I tell him, my voice sounding completely steady and sharp as I heave the heavy leather bag off the metal surface, the sheer weight of the contents straining my arm muscles but I refuse to let go of the handles.

"That bag weighs at least thirty pounds, Maya, so let me carry the straps while we navigate the remaining utility stairs because you are already carrying the primary Edinburgh folder inside your coat pocket and you won't be able to run fast if we encounter the perimeter patrol near the driveway," he says, his dark eyes scanning my face with a mixture of intense surprise and protective worry while his fingers wrap around the top leather seams to lift the weight off my wrists.

"I can carry my own family's weight perfectly fine, Adrian, and you need to keep both of your hands completely free to handle that automatic pistol because your father is already heading for the private marina behind the house, so just lead the way out of this room and stop treating me like I am still the helpless girl Silas left stranded in that Swiss boarding school three years ago," I fire back, tightening my grip on the leather straps and staring directly into his eyes until he nods his head in silent agreement and releases his hold on the bag.

"You are definitely not that helpless girl anymore, Maya, so keep right behind my left shoulder and drop the bag instantly if I tell you to run for the side door," he answers, a small, grim smile touching his lips for a fraction of a second before he turns toward the outer threshold where Damien is already waving his crowbar through the thick haze of the corridor.

"Adrian, Maya, you need to scramble up these back stairs right this second because Sofia just intercepted a radio transmission from the harbor master's office, and Silas has already ordered his yacht crew to cast off the stern lines from the private pier!" Damien shouts through the open doorway, his face covered in dark grease and rain sweat as he gestures toward the narrow concrete steps that bypass the main lobby lift.

"We have the primary documents and half of the physical bonds, Damien, so tell Sofia to get the sedan's engine running near the western veranda lane because we are going to intercept that boat before the captain can turn the hull toward the open lagoon," I tell him, stepping past Adrian's frame and lifting the heavy leather bag over the threshold without a single bit of hesitation in my stride.

"Maya is right, Damien, just get to the vehicle and make sure the secondary security gate is still jammed because if those iron barriers slide shut now, we are going to get trapped on the driveway with all this physical evidence in our possession," Adrian commands, his hand resting firmly on my lower back to steady my pace as we begin to climb the steep, unlit steps toward the courtyard level.

"I am glad to see you finally took charge of the asset reclamation, Maya, because if we left those bonds on the table, Silas would have used his overseas lawyers to tie up the funds in the Swiss courts for the next twenty years," Damien mutters over his shoulder as his boots click rapidly against the concrete risers ahead of us, his tone carrying a sudden sense of respect that makes the heavy weight of the leather bag feel completely insignificant compared to the victory we are about to secure.

"He isn't going to tie up anything else in a legal court, Damien, because once the high court judge receives the digital transmission Sofia is broadcasting, the Vale family name will be completely frozen on every maritime registry from Lagos to London," I say, my breathing turning shallow from the intense physical exertion but my heart is pounding with a fierce, unstoppable satisfaction because the man who ruined my childhood is finally running out of places to hide, and the sound of the yacht's heavy diesel engines rumbling through the open courtyard doors above means the final confrontation on the pier is already waiting for us.
