Chapter 65 - A birthday surprise.
Arora
Those couple of days quickly turned into weeks. It felt as though I had blinked, and it had turned into a couple of years! The entire kingdom was flourishing under Luke’s and my rule. People were happy, and I could see it each time we had one of our tours throughout the kingdom. My biggest relief was Sebastian’s pack, who turned things around.
We even had some of their pack members requesting transfer to the Royal Army. Our kingdom was running like a well-oiled machine and people were happy. The only thing that saddened me was how fast Adam grew up. Luke and I tried to have more pups, but for some reason, we just never did, and eventually I made peace with the fact that we would only have one child.
I had always wanted an entire litter of children, but it seemed that was not in our future. It was on the day we were celebrating Adam’s fifth birthday that all of that changed. As soon as I took my first bite of the creamy birthday cake, I physically felt myself turn green. My stomach flipped right around! I whipped around and rushed to the bathroom and made it just in time. At first, we thought it might just be that the food was a little too rich or that I had some bug, but by late afternoon, the doctor walked in smiling broadly.
“Congratulations, your highnesses. You are pregnant.” He grinned and I felt shocked. They could never find anything wrong with either me or Luke. There was no physical explanation as to why we didn’t fall pregnant! Nobody ever officially said that I was infertile or anything. I gaped at Luke for a moment before he let out a loud whoop and swept me up into his arms. I was grateful that he didn’t swing me through the air, since I felt utterly awful!!
“Are you sure?” I studied the doctor for a moment after Luke let go and when he nodded, I allowed myself to feel the purest of joys. We were pregnant! I felt sad that my sudden illness kind of spoiled little Adam’s birthday, but all of that disappeared as soon as we told him that he was going to have a baby brother or sister.
“Is that my present?” His little face scrunched up at us after we told him and I burst out laughing. The guests had kept our little one busy by giving him his gifts while Luke and I were seeing the doctor. By the time we were finished, all the guests had left and Adam was waiting in his room. Luke disappeared for a short while and I tried to distract Adam while we waited.
When Luke returned, he was carrying the gift box with our son’s gift inside and Adam’s eyes lit up like a Christmas tree as soon as he saw his dad.
“Here is your gift, baby boy.” Luke grinned and Adam frowned again.
“I am not a baby anymore, daddy. I am five. I’m a big boy now.” He sighed as he ripped at the paper and opened his gift. I was so happy, but I was still feeling incredibly nauseous, so I kept my mouth shut just in case. Adam squealed with delight at the sight of his gift and before long he was happily playing on the carpet.
Luke and I retired to our room, and it felt as if I could breathe for the first time in hours. Luke helped me to take a shower and when I could finally climb into my nightgown, it felt like the best thing ever. I felt sick. Something that didn’t happen when I was pregnant with Adam. Hell, I never got sick. I was a werewolf. Our wolves always healed us, and we never really felt the effects of any illnesses.
Luke slid into bed beside me, and we spent the evening in bed catching up on the day’s events. My heart was simply bursting with love as my hand slipped over my abdomen. It still felt like a dream. I had honestly thought Adam would be our only child and this little one that was now growing inside my stomach was my little angel.
“If it’s a girl, I would like to call her angel.” I spoke out loud and didn’t realize it until Luke burst out laughing.
“I don’t know, honey. You might decide to change it once she is born. She might not be an angel.” He laughed and I rolled my eyes. He was right. My body was already pulsing with pregnancy hormones and choosing a name off the cuff like that might not be the best idea ever. Luke and I had received the best gift we could ever have received.
The kingdom would be informed in the morning, and then we all would have received the best news we could possibly have. We were going to have a baby! The kingdom would have another heir! Not that I wanted to think that anything would happen to Adam! I eventually fell asleep, and my nausea faded just enough that I could get a good night’s sleep.
Since I was a little further along this time than when we found out about Adam, it turned the entire castle a little upside down. The baby’s room had to be decorated, which made me feel very torn up inside. I didn’t want Adam to move to another room that would put him further away from us and I couldn’t let the baby stay in the room further away from us!
In the end, Luke came to the rescue and suggested we put both of them in one room. It was the perfect solution, since the room was big enough for two babies. They weren’t grown up enough yet to want rooms of their own. This time around, however, Luke and I wanted to know the gender of the baby, so we could make sure the room was decorated right.
I was blissfully happy to find out that we were expecting a girl, but we kept the secret to ourselves. It would remain our secret until she was born.
