Chapter 35: Chapter Thirty-Five: Behind the Locked Door

Ethan led her down the hallway slowly, his hand firm against the small of her back.

The house slept around them.

Rain whispered against the windows.

And with every step, anticipation tightened deeper inside Lila’s chest.

At the end of the hall, Ethan stopped before a dark wooden door she had never seen open before.

Her pulse skipped.

He glanced back at her, reading the nervous curiosity in her expression instantly.

“You don’t have to go inside,” he said calmly.

The choice again.

Always the choice.

Lila took a slow breath before answering. “I want to.”

Ethan studied her for another second, then unlocked the door.

The room beyond was dimly lit in amber tones, softer than she expected. No harshness. No coldness. Shelves lined one wall neatly, holding restraints, silk ties, candles, and objects she recognized only vaguely. A leather chaise rested near the center of the room beside a low cabinet.

It should have intimidated her.

Instead, it felt strangely intimate.

Like a place built on trust rather than secrecy.

Ethan watched her carefully as she stepped inside.

“Color?” he asked immediately.

“Green.”

“Good.”

He closed the door quietly behind them.

Lila turned slowly, taking everything in while Ethan loosened the cuffs of his sleeves with maddening calm.

“You’ve done this before,” she said softly.

“Yes.”

The honesty in him never wavered.

“But never with you,” he added.

Something about that mattered.

A lot.

Ethan crossed toward her slowly until he stood close enough for her to feel the heat radiating from him.

“Tonight is not about pushing limits,” he said. “It’s about learning what you enjoy. What you don’t. What makes you feel safe.”

Lila nodded slowly.

His fingers brushed beneath her chin again.

“And if I think you’re overwhelmed,” he continued, “I stop. Even if you tell me not to.”

The protective edge in his voice sent a shiver through her.

Ethan moved toward one of the shelves and picked up a long strip of black silk.

Lila’s stomach flipped.

“Hands behind your back,” he instructed gently.

She obeyed.

The silk wrapped around her wrists, smooth against her skin as Ethan tied it carefully, leaving enough room to slide two fingers beneath the restraint.

Not trapping.

Securing.

“You comfortable?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good girl.”

The praise hit like warm whiskey through her bloodstream.

Ethan guided her toward the chaise slowly before sitting beside her. His hand traced lightly along her thigh while his other hand opened a small velvet-lined box resting nearby.

Inside sat several sleek toys, elegant instead of intimidating.

Lila’s breath caught.

Ethan noticed immediately.

“Nervous?”

“A little.”

“That’s alright.”

He picked up a small silver vibrator first, deliberately letting her see it before touching her with it.

“No surprises,” he murmured.

The gentle hum filled the room softly.

Then Ethan pressed it lightly against the inside of her thigh.

Lila jolted at the sudden sensation, a gasp escaping her before she could stop it.

Ethan’s eyes darkened.

“There you are.”

He moved agonizingly slowly, teasing rather than overwhelming, letting anticipation build until Lila’s breathing turned ragged.

Every reaction she gave him, he watched carefully.

Every tremor.

Every soft sound.

Every shift in her body.

“You’re doing beautifully,” he said quietly.

The words made her feel exposed in the best possible way.

Seen.

Ethan set the toy aside briefly before reaching for something else from the cabinet drawer.

A slim leather paddle.

Lila’s pulse thundered.

Ethan held it loosely at his side while stepping closer.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“You are safe,” he said firmly. “And you are in control of this with me. Understand?”

“Yes, sir.”

He brushed the paddle lightly against her thigh first, letting her feel the leather before anything else.

Then came a single light smack.

Sharp enough to sting.

Not enough to hurt.

Lila inhaled hard, shock and heat colliding instantly beneath her skin.

Ethan’s expression sharpened with focus.

“Color?”

“Green.”

Another strike.

Slightly firmer this time.

The sensation bloomed warm across her skin, immediately followed by Ethan’s hand soothing over the spot afterward.

Pleasure tangled strangely with the sting, confusing and intoxicating all at once.

“There’s the balance,” he murmured against her ear. “Pleasure and restraint. Trust and surrender.”

Lila’s head tipped back slightly as Ethan kissed slowly along her throat, his fingers threading gently through her hair while the toy hummed softly back to life in his hand.

The room blurred into sensation.

Warmth.

Pressure.

Praise.

Control so careful it became tenderness.

And through all of it, Ethan never stopped watching her like she was something precious placed entirely in his care.

The air in the room had changed.

Heavy now.

Charged.

Lila’s breathing came unevenly as Ethan stood behind her, one hand spread possessively across her waist while the soft hum of the toy still pulsed against her sensitive skin in slow, deliberate waves.

Not rushed.

Never rushed.

That was what made him dangerous.

Ethan understood patience.

Understood exactly how to unravel her inch by inch until even the smallest touch felt unbearable.

“You’re shaking,” he murmured near her ear.

Lila let out a breathless laugh. “You noticed?”

“I notice everything about you.”

The words wrapped around her tighter than the silk around her wrists.

Ethan turned the vibration lower before trailing it teasingly along her body again, never quite where she wanted it most. The denial made her restless, her body instinctively seeking more.

He noticed that too.

One strong hand settled against her hip immediately.

“Stay still.”

The command sent heat rushing through her instantly.

Lila obeyed, though barely.

Ethan’s mouth brushed slowly against the curve of her shoulder. “Good girl.”

God.

Every time he said it, she melted a little more.

He guided her carefully onto the chaise then, helping her settle against the dark leather while he knelt in front of her. The position alone made her dizzy. Ethan Knox, composed and untouchable Ethan, looking at her like she was the only thing in the world capable of wrecking his control.

His fingers slid slowly along her legs before he pressed another soft kiss just above her knee.

“You’re beautiful like this,” he said quietly.

Vulnerable.

Trusting.

His.

The thought should have terrified her.

Instead it made her ache.

Ethan reached for the silk binding her wrists, loosening it just enough to rub soothing circles over her skin.

“Still comfortable?”

“Yes, sir.”

“That’s what I like to hear.”

The storm outside cracked louder now, lightning briefly illuminating the room in silver flashes. Ethan rose slowly, removing his shirt with maddening calm before tossing it aside.

Lila swallowed hard.

The shift in him was visible now.

Still controlled.

Still careful.

But thinner at the edges.

Like restraint stretched tight.

Ethan caught her staring and smirked faintly. “You look overwhelmed.”

“You are very distracting.”

A low chuckle escaped him.

“Careful,” he warned softly. “You keep looking at me like that and I might lose some of my patience.”

Heat curled through her stomach.

Part of her wanted exactly that.

Ethan stepped behind her again and slowly gathered her hair in one hand, tilting her head back just enough to expose her throat.

“You trust me?” he asked once more.

“Yes.”

“Completely?”

Lila hesitated only long enough to understand the truth before whispering:

“Yes, sir.”

Ethan exhaled slowly against her skin like the answer affected him more than he wanted her to know.

Then his composure finally cracked a little.

Not violently.

Not cruelly.

But enough.

His kiss became deeper this time, rougher around the edges as his hands tightened against her waist. The toy in his hand moved with more confidence now, drawing startled sounds from her lips she could no longer hold back.

“That’s it,” he murmured. “Don’t hold them in.”

Lila trembled beneath him.

Every sensation felt amplified.

The sting from the paddle earlier still lingered warmly against her skin, blending with the overwhelming pleasure Ethan pulled from her so expertly that she could no longer separate one from the other.

Pleasure.

Tension.

Relief.

Need.

It all tangled together until she felt completely consumed by him.

Ethan suddenly stilled the toy.

Lila let out a frustrated sound immediately.

A dangerous smile touched his mouth.

“There she is.”

Her cheeks burned. “That wasn’t fair.”

“No,” he agreed calmly. “It was intentional.”

The authority in his tone sent another shiver through her.

Ethan brushed his thumb across her lower lip, studying her carefully.

“You want more?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Use your words.”

Lila’s pulse thundered.

“I want you to make me fall apart.”

Something dark and heated flickered across Ethan’s face at the confession.

He leaned closer slowly.

“And what do you think I’ve been trying to do all night?”

The next hour disappeared into a blur of sensation.

Ethan alternated between overwhelming gentleness and devastating control so seamlessly it left Lila breathless. Every touch had purpose behind it. Every command grounded her deeper into the moment.

When he praised her, she glowed beneath it.

When he restrained her, she trusted him completely.

And when he finally let himself unravel too, the polished control he carried so carefully cracked apart in the most intoxicating way imaginable.

His forehead rested against hers afterward, both of them breathing hard in the dim amber light while rain continued tapping softly against the windows.

The room no longer felt intimidating.

It felt sacred.

Ethan slowly untied the silk from her wrists before bringing her hands to his lips one at a time, kissing the faint marks left behind.

Tender again.

Always tender after.

Lila watched him quietly, emotions still spinning through her chest.

“You took care of me,” she whispered.

Ethan looked at her like she’d said something important.

“Always.”

One word.

Absolute.

He pulled her gently into his arms then, wrapping a blanket around both of them as the storm rolled on outside.

And somewhere deep inside her, Lila realized this was no longer curiosity.

No longer experimentation.

She was falling hopelessly, dangerously in love with every side of him.
