Chapter 110: Give what belongs to Caesar to Caesar.
There was a moment of silence between the two or rather, three as Viola was unconscious, laying on the fairly uncomfortable bed of the infirmary while Asher seared in boiling anger, gripping unto her hand for dear life.
Imogen on the other hand, stood rigid like a rock, grimacing and clenching her teeth together tightly as she herself faced this uncomfortable situation.
“So you left and didn’t even leave a note?”, the pain in Asher’s voice was alarming,
“I wasn’t planning on leaving you”, she said, breaking down in tears, “That night… I went out to clear my head and I might’ve gotten a little bit carried away because I didn’t even notice that I had left the pack entirely”,
“What the fuck do you mean?”, he was mentally drained by this back and forth- it was too much for him to deal with and he wasn’t sure that his brain could take another blow of information.
“I went out for a stroll Asher! Goddess knows it. I wasn’t expecting to be ambushed by more rogues than I could count!”, she explained, “So I ran”,
“Not back into the pack?”, Asher questioned and she shook her head, “Why?”,
“Because Addilyn was with them! And believe it or not, I thought about going back until I realized that she would be granted free access into the pack since she was still a member”, she pursed her lips, asking for permission to continue or leaving him with space to input his thoughts,
“Your things were missing”, he pointed out and dreaded her not having anything to do with that because it would mean that the rogues had gone into his room without him knowing- he was an Alpha! How could he not sense them?
“I swear, I have nothing to do with that. I didn’t even know what was happening here”, she admitted, biting her lips nervously.
“Where did you go?”,
“I was luckily able to out run them”, she sighed, “My mind was literally everywhere and I knew I needed to get to safety before they could spot me or even tell where I was going so I hid in a tree until I was sure they were gone then I headed to the safest place I knew”, Asher gifted her a look of confusion, “Headquarters”.
Asher’s blood spiked up again as he realized what she had just said, “My parents knew where you were the entire time!”, he had suffered and they had watched him as he sunk and wept profusely like a little pup who had gotten his toy stolen… “They knew!”,
“No, Asher”, a deep masculine voice which commanded authority spoke from the door, “I knew, your mother had nothing to do with this”,
Asher was on his feet in a second and he stormed over to where his father stood and swung his fists at him but before he could even make contact, Jax caught his fists and squeezed his hand, nearly breaking it.
Asher thought he was faster but Jax was the fastest.
“You know what your problem is son? You don’t think before you do, you act out on impulse and I swear it will ruin you”,
“No, Jax! You have ruined me! If you had just given her to me, none of this would’ve happened”,
A dry laugh escaped Jax’s lips as he stared his son in the eyes and said, “That war with Darian was inevitable, if I had let her go back to you, she would’ve been a pawn in your game of chess”.
Asher didn’t know what to say to his father’s words because every inch of him knew the older man was telling the truth.
“That’s not all”, Jax said and looked to Imogen who gave him a shocked look- her eyes were wide as saucers and her mouth gaping open before she began to shake her head. The Alpha ignored her and turned to his son, “We also had an agreement that we should let you have some time with your mate to see who your choice really is”,
“It wasn’t your place!”,
“You are disgracing me, son! Do you think it’s easy for me to hear people mocking me and dragging my name through the mud because of you?”, Jax hadn’t meant for his words to come out as harsh as they did, “Ash…”,
“No!”, he lifted his hand up, “You’ve said your piece”, he moved away from his father and went over to Imogen, cupping her face with his large hand, not believing what he was about to do, “Imogen, I still love you… more than anything”,
Hope filled her eyes and he nearly burst into tears knowing that what he was going to do next was something he might regret for the rest of his life, “I love you”, she said.
“But…”, he sighed and the hope in her eyes burned out, “You deserve much more than me. You deserve a man that can make you feel like you’re one in a million- you deserve a man who won’t make you feel like an option, whether first or second and mostly, you deserve a man who isn’t destined to be with your sister”, she was about to talk but he wasn’t going to let her, “You have stuck with me through everything and anything and I would forever be indebted to you”, the more tears fell out of her eyes, the more heartbreak he felt.
“What are you saying?”,
“Go to your mate, Imogen. It’s not too late for you to repair and fix the bond. Beg him until he takes you back, make him love you just like you made me. You are a fucking star, Imogen”, he kissed the top of her head, “Make him see that”.
There was no changing his mind and Imogen could see that. She had been defeated- her sister had won him over and she wasn’t surprised. There was something her sister had that she didn’t have and Asher had seen that it.
Imogen knew she could stay there and keep fighting but she saw no point to it. After all, Asher was never truly hers’ to begin with.
‘Give what belongs to Caesar to Caesar’.
That was exactly what she was doing- Asher belonged to Viola and if being with her would make him happy, she will gladly walk away with her crumbled heart in her hands.
Imogen left with her father and it was only when the door closed behind them that Asher was able to have his own breakdown. He slumped back into the chair and covered his face with his hands and yelling, the loud sounds muffled by his palms.
What had he just done?
What the fuck had he just done?
He had just chased away the woman he had literally lost everything for. He had just given away the person he loved the most.
Could he still… No! He sat up firmly and he realized that he did what had to be done, Imogen deserves to have a life filled with love- she had gone through so much being with him; hated and pain.
Enough was enough, she didn’t have to go through that anymore. In fact, he swore that from then onwards, no one would have to go through anything because of him. He wasn’t going to be the cause of anyone’s pain anymore.
