Chapter 150

The Silent Army

Flames licked at the darkness of the night sky outside the southern wall, black smoke curling up like an angry ghost. Joel paced on the rampart, cloak billowing around his knees, eyes straining against the heat. He had ridden hard out of the packhouse, omens ringing in his head: "Unmarked wolves," the scout had reported. "Silent. No howls. Just shadows." And then the wall had gone up in flames.

Lynk descended beside him, gasping. "Holy gods," he gritted out, voice metallic over the scream of fire. "They just got here."

Joel's jaw firmed. "They're here." He tracked the fire-lit fence with his gaze. "Silent army."

Lynk's Adam's apple bobbed. "What do you want to do?"

Joel's hand on the hilt of his sword. "Assess the damage. Look for survivors." He wheeled around, eyes cold and hard. "You… mobilize the warriors. Deploy them to prepare for war. General mobilization."

Lynk nodded, his face pale. "Immediately." He turned and disappeared into the darkness.

Joel sheathed his sword and descended from the wall, the roar of fire behind him. Below, warriors ran towards the blaze, torches held high, shouting orders. He stepped across the burned barrier, where wood glowed and glass lay broken. He swept the ground. No tracks… only charred earth where untrackable wolves moved through the breach quietly.

A dead warrior was half buried in ash. Joel knelt beside him, fingers tracing the gash. No bite marks… just one deep cut across the throat. Effective. Brutal. He traced the warrior's uniform collar with a finger and followed the emblem. A wolf's head, severed. Closer inspection showed an out-of-date emblem: the Blood Fang pack. A myth. Dead for decades.

Joel rose to his feet, rage congealing in his veins. He unbuckled his sword again and strode towards the camp. Campfires surrounded the wounded and dead, warriors tending to victims, fear on every face. Panic was dissipated by Joel's presence. An unsettling silence fell as he strode towards them.

One of the younger scouts stepped forward. "Alpha Joel." He spoke in a trembling voice. "It was… them. No banners. No runes. Just the mark on the dead. The Blood Fang symbol."

Joel's lips set in a hard line. "Where is the rest of them?"

The scout swallowed hard. "Gone. Like smoke.".

Joel's gaze swept the darkness beyond the wall. "Then they'll strike again." He turned and bellowed an order: "Seal the breach with fresh wood. Patrol in twos. Nobody leaves camp without my permission."

"Alpha!" the scout called out and scattered.

Joel beckoned to two betas. "Fetch me the messenger," he ordered. "Whoever's still here."

The betas nodded and set off into the night. Joel walked to the camp center, where warriors stood in a ragged circle around the corpse. He knelt and closed the dead man's eyelids. "Rest," he said softly. Rising, he addressed the silence. "Blood Fang walks once more… long thought dead. They've struck our warriors and our wall." His voice was low and deadly. "Tonight they strike at our gates. Soon they'll come for our people… maybe for her."

A murmur of discontent ran through the ranks. Joel glanced at the butler standing at the edge of the circle, expression scrunched up. He'd insisted on staying, guardsman or not.

"Sir?" the butler ventured. "Is there something I might help you with?"

Joel gave him a glare. "Hold the line. Seal off infirmary. No going in or out without patrol.".

The butler made a tight bow and withdrew. Joel faced his second, Lynk, who returned with two betas pulling a bound messenger between them.

The prisoner was covered in blood and trembling, face concealed under a hood. Joel stepped forward, hand on the sword pommel.

"Tell me who sent you," Joel said, voice icicle.

The messenger spat a wad of blood. "They… they're massing south. Thousands. The Blood Fang… "

"Mouth open," Joel snapped.

The man obeyed. Joel popped the hood. The eyes of the prisoner were wild, black as a starless night. No recognition. Joel's fist flew into the messenger's stomach, and the man doubled up, coughs wracking his body.

"Talk," Joel growled.

"Wait." he gasped. "You must warn her."

"I don't know." the messenger gagged.

"Your… your friend." The word spat out of him. "They know who she is. They see her face. They want the dead wolf's face one."

Joel stepped back, fury and fear battling. "Dead wolf's face?"

The messenger coughed. "The girl Joel saved… emerged from the river with the face of a corpse. They call her Dead Wolf. She has that blood… Lena's blood." He coughed harshly. "They're taking her."

Joel's eyes focused. The flames behind him were a scarlet haze. His head roared: They are after Emerald. They are after Lena's legacy. They are after murdering her.

He spun around. "Take him away." His voice was a thunderclap. "And feed him to the wolves at dawn."

Lynk paled but fell in, dragging the wounded man away.

Joel edged to the edge of the camp, where the wall burned. He stooped, placing a gloved hand on the charred wood. His heart pounded with the rhythm of hooves… armies gathering.

He took a deep breath and shut his eyes. The wind seared like frozen steel. Whispered his name.

Joel.

He opened his eyes. The fire barrier spat and spewed, hurling embers into the air.

He stood, chest heaving. He would not let them take her. He would not let them break her. Not Lena. Not Emerald.

He returned to the command tent, where maps and tokens lay scattered across a roughly cut table. Lynk was already there, pacing, face set hard.

"They've seen the symbol," Lynk said. "Blood Fang's mark. They're not coming as wolves. They're coming as ghosts."

Joel nodded and grabbed a pointer next to him. "We attack them first. We take the war to their conclave."

Lynk's eyes widened. "You mean… "

Joel pounced the pointer on the map. "At sunrise we advance south. Two thousand men. Sword and flame. We scatter them before they can form ranks."

Lynk steadied himself. "You're going to invade territory that doesn't belong to us?"

Joel's stare was thunder. "They've taken our nights. They've taken our peace. They'll bleed every last drop until we stand on their bones."

Lynk swallowed. "And she? If they're coming for her… "

Joel's jaw clenched. "Then I'll kill every one of them before they get to her."

Lynk nodded, resolve hardening in his eyes. "At dawn, Alpha."

Joel whirled from the map, cloak flying. He emerged into night air, where warriors stood in formation. Swordpoints glittered like stars. The firelight leaped across their faces in orange shadow.

He leaped upon a raised log, sword aloft. "Hear me!" His voice thundered across the formation. "Tonight, darkness fell on our gates. Tonight, they struck with shadow and steel. But tomorrow… tomorrow we strike back!"

A roar returned to him, wild and loud enough to shake the trees.

Joel raised his sword. "For the pack! For Lena!"

Another roar.

He descended and walked through the lines, each of the warriors bowing as he passed. His wolf hummed in his head:  It begins.

And outside the barrier, where the flames still hissed, an army gathered.

The silent army.

And they were coming for her.
