Chapter 33: Chapter Thirty-Three: Weak For You
Demetri’s POV.
I was weak for Freya.
Usually, I made decisions with caution but that all went out the window when Freya made a request of me.
What wouldn’t I do for her?
I knocked on Ginni’s door. “Freya didn’t tell me you were coming to pick up Gabe,” she said after opening the door.
“She found out,” I said, walking in. “I didn’t get the chance to tell her myself, we had a prisoner from The Cold Lightning pack who claims to be her sister. She found out from her.”
Ginni’s hands were shaking. “Sister…” she said and frowned. “Freya’s upset with me?”
I picked up Gabriel off the couch, he was sound asleep. “Mm-hm,” I responded. “I’d give her time to cool off while you think of what you will say to her. You’re still her mother but she needs to understand why you did it and never came clean.” I needed Ginni to fix things so Freya wouldn’t have second thoughts about staying a part of our pack. Her parents were the main reason she rejoined.
Ginni nodded and I left.
While Freya worked the next day, I spent my free day with Gabriel. He wanted to watch me spar with the warrior wolves so I showed off a bit for my son. I took on a pretty hard knockdown, one warrior's head to mine. I was distracted by a mindlink I got from Freya, ‘Rose was telling the truth, the test shows that we share the DNA of sisters.’
‘We’ll talk later.’
My head throbbed.
Gabriel was worried but I threw the warrior off of me and continued sparing. I shouldn’t have anything to worry about if Rose truly hated her pack as much as she said. Since she was a runaway minor who was still linked to her pack I might have some issues. Someone would come looking for her soon.
As I shifted into my human form to take a break from sparing my son ran up to me with praise. “You were so cool!” he said excitedly as he jumped up and down.
I patted his head with a smile. “When you have your first shift you’ll go straight into basic training like I did. Eventually, we can spar with each other”
Gabriel’s eyes lit up before running off a few moments later.
I watched Gabriel as he playfully spared with one of the boys his age in their human forms. I looked around at everyone and my eyes landed on Brandon who was sitting under a tree alone.
It was weird seeing Brandon around without having Caroline by his side. I walked to him and leaned against the tree, looking down at him. “Where’s your other half?” I asked.
“Voluntarily locked up in her room,” Brandon answered. “She won’t even tell me what’s wrong.”
I was worried about Caroline. I knew she went to lock up with Freya yesterday and Freya’s “sister” must have said something that upset her. I didn’t want to lose my Gamma, not only because she was amazing at helping me run the pack but because we’ve been friends for a while and I cared about her. If she tried going back to The Cold Lightning Pack we’d be enemies and they’d hurt her all over again.
Brandon closed his eyes. “I feel like I’m chasing my own tail here,” he said. “We’re close but I’m in the friendzone. It’s weird because sometimes I’m sure she has feelings for me.” I hated to admit it but she was probably holding out for her mate. When I took her in and trusted her enough to give her a seat in my inner council I knew there was a chance she leave and become Luna of our biggest enemy pack. She’d know our secrets and would be able to use them against us but I took my chances.
“Don’t give up on Caroline,” I said. “It’s not in your head, I see it too when you two are together. You haven’t met your mate so you don’t know how hard it is to be with someone who’s not after already feeling that bond.”
Brandon buried his head in his crossed arms that lay on his knees and said, “Yeah…”
The rest of the day with Gabriel flew by.
Night came and I was getting sick of sleeping alone. I never had a problem finding company for the night but I didn’t want anyone in my bed unless it was Freya.
In the morning Becca sent me a text letting me know that Kyle had been doing his work this whole time. Apparently, he left all these reports in the conference room so I headed there. When I opened the door Kyle was putting his reports away in one of the filing cabinets.
Kyle turned and let out a disappointed breath. “Becca texted to you too soon, no doubt on purpose.”
“She wants me to apologize,” I said.
Kyle closed the filing cabinet door. “But you’re not going to.”
I shrugged and walked to him. “With everything we’ve been through I shouldn’t have to,” I started. “But if it’s gonna be such a big deal then I’m sorry. I already said I regret it and I think it’s clear I wouldn’t do it again if I could go back.”
Kyle scoffed. “You regret it because you hurt and lost Freya not because of how it’s affected me and my family.” His glare grew heavier. “When we became closer you could have told me. I could have at least reached out to them or something.” It would have resulted in everyone learning the truth, I wasn’t ready for that. “I wasn’t only close to Freya. I spent every summer with my aunt and uncle as a kid. They were like a second set of parents to me!” he shouted with his fists clenched. “My grandparents were so distraught that their daughter betrayed the pack that they distanced themselves away from the rest of us. No one trusts each other anymore and you were to blame.”
“What do you want from me, Kyle?”
“You’re a dick, Demetri.”
Kyle shoved past me and slammed the door.
I stood there for a few minutes, thinking about what he said and how I didn’t know how badly I destroyed his family. All these years I never asked how they were doing because I was afraid Freya would come up in the conversation and I’d be reminded that I lost her.
I left the conference room, not bothering to take or look at his reports.
On my way down the hall, I stopped because of something I saw in my peripherals as I passed the long rectangular window of the infirmary. Adam and Freya were awfully comfortable with each other. They hadn’t seemed to notice me looking in at them. They were talking and laughing but Adam was a little too close to her.
It was hard not to burst into the room when he put his hand on the small of her back. He was looking at her with lust in his eyes. It disgusted me and my wolf wanted to tear him apart. Me? I wanted to exile him, make sure he’d never be near my mate again. I held myself back from doing anything rash. Unfortunately we didn’t have another doctor as good as him and Freya would hold this against me if I didn’t have a good reason.
Freya got up and left to the back while Adam stayed in view behind the front desk.
Since Freya and I traded off with Gabriel so often I knew her schedule, she’d be off in ten or so minutes, so I waited. I crossed my arms and pressed my back against the wall adjacent to the window of the infirmary, still watching unnoticed.
Adam’s other nurse came from the back with paperwork in her arms. She walked to Adam behind the desk and set them down. They talked for a second before he leaned in to whisper something to her and before pulling away he kissed her neck discreetly. The nurse didn’t look very comfortable. He looked at her with the same gaze he set on Freya earlier. His hand reached up her skirt and she laughed it off, taking a step back. As she walked away to the back, she had a look of shame on her face.
I held back a growl.
If he treated my Freya that way, he’d be dead in an instant, scum.
Freya walked back to the front and waved at Adam with a smile before walking towards the door. I took a step out of view of the window so she wouldn’t see me watching. When she opened the door she looked at me surprised. “Oh hey Demetri,” she said. “Were you waiting for me?”
I shook my head. “I have business with Adam.”
“Is it serious?” Freya asked, concerned. “You look kind of… intense.”
I waved my hand in front of me. “It’s nothing you need to worry about.” Not anymore.
“When you’re done here, can you meet me in my room so we can talk about Rose?” Her room, interesting.
I agreed and watched her walk away for a little longer than I intended, she looked good in scrubs. How couldn’t she feel what felt anymore…? I wasn’t as bad as my worst actions but maybe she wasn’t convinced.
I walked into the infirmary and straight to Adam’s office. “Alpha Demetri, it’s always a treat to see you.” I couldn’t say the same. “Is there something I can do for you?”
“I’m switching both your nurses to work with another doctor,” I said. “There’s a few nurse applications I’ve been sitting on, I’ll assign someone to you quickly.” Male nurses because I wasn’t going to let him harass the women of our pack. Really I didn’t want him working here at all but I probably will find another reason to remove his role as pack doctor at some point.
“There has to be a mistake,” Adam said and the smug look on his face made me want to punch him. “Neither of my nurses mentioned wanting to transfer and I didn’t put in a request.”
“I’m making the call,” I said, “It’s for the best.”
Adam looked like he wanted to question me but he backed down.
“And let me offer you a piece of advice,” I said, my expression cold and I could see fear in his eyes. “Don’t think about touching my mate again, it won’t end it.”
“Un—understood.”
Now off to Freya’s room to discuss our intruder.
