Chapter 86: The Curse Beneath

Raven

Elara’s eyes are shadowed when she finds me. She doesn’t come often now — she and Cassius are deep in the work of shoring up Haven’s borders — but today there’s something urgent in the way she pushes into my tent, snow melting in the dark strands of her braid.

She doesn’t sit. Doesn’t even bother with a greeting.

“I had another vision,” she says.

I set down the whetstone I’ve been running over my blade. “Bad?”

Her gaze doesn’t waver. “Worse. And it wasn’t about me this time. It was you.”

I motion for her to speak, but the air between us is already heavy. She paces once, twice, then stops as if planting her feet will keep the vision from following her here.

“I saw Lilliana,” she says finally. “And you. She was trying to bind you — not your body, not even your wolf. Your Flame.”

The word curls in my gut, molten and dangerous. My mother’s gift. My mother’s curse.

“She failed to bind your mother’s Flame once,” Elara goes on. “But she won’t fail with you unless you claim it first.”

My throat tightens. “You’re sure?”

Her expression is grim. “I saw the same chains that wrapped your mother’s wrists, the same ash that smothered her fire. She fought, Raven. But without the bond anchored, she couldn’t stop it. You’re stronger than she was — but Lilliana knows it. She’s going to use the curse to make you doubt yourself.”

Nyx’s Seer’s warning echoes in my mind: The Hollow Howl devours the mate’s soul if you choose too soon.

“She’ll make you believe you’re dangerous to the one you love,” Elara says, reading my thoughts as easily as she reads the weather. “Fear is her weapon. The second you give in to it, she’ll chain you with it.”

I press my fingers to the mark on my wrist. It’s quiet now, but there’s a steady thrum beneath my skin, as if it’s listening.

“If she wants a chain,” I say, “she’s going to have to catch me first.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Elara murmurs, her gaze softening. “Don’t wait until you’re cornered, Raven. Choose the ground you fight on.”

She leaves before I can answer, her scent of smoke and pine trailing behind her like a thread I could follow if I wanted.

But I don’t follow. I already know where my ground is.

By the time the sun has burned through the morning clouds, I’ve called the pack to the central clearing.

The cold bites at my cheeks, the sky the pale gray of wolf fur. The firepit is lit, its flames snapping gold and orange against the snow. The ring of wolves is solid around it — rogues, old bloodlines, Haven-born alike. Nyx leans against the long table with her arms crossed, her eyes bright with anticipation. Elara stands beside Cassius, her gaze steady on me.

And Kieran… he’s just inside the circle, hands loose at his sides, watching me like I’m the only thing that matters here.

I step into the center, letting the fire’s light paint gold across the frost at my boots. My wolf is at the surface, her presence heavy and steady inside me.

“You’ve all heard the whispers,” I begin. My voice carries easily in the cold air. “About the mark. The prophecy. The curse.”

A low ripple moves through the crowd — a shift of paws, a murmur of voices. I wait until it fades.

“They say if I choose too soon, I’ll destroy the one I love. That the Hollow Hand can use my fire to end us.” I let my gaze travel across the ring, meeting eyes, forcing the words to land.

More murmurs, sharper this time. A few wolves glance at Kieran. He doesn’t flinch.

I take another step forward, closer to the fire, letting its heat roll over my skin. “Here’s the truth. No mark, no curse, no prophecy will choose my mate. I will. And when I do, this fire will belong to us — not to the Hollow Hand, not to Lilliana, not to anyone but the wolves who stand here.”

A low growl of approval rises from somewhere in the circle. Then another. Until the sound swells into something primal and fierce, a rumble in the ground beneath my boots.

I turn slowly, letting my eyes lock on each face. Some are wary. Some burn with open loyalty. But all of them are listening.

“If Lilliana wants a fight, she’ll get one,” I say. “But it will be on our terms. Not hers. The Flame is not a weapon she can wield. It’s mine. And I’ll burn every chain she tries to throw over it.”

The firepit flares higher, flames reaching for the sky as if answering me. Heat slides under my skin, my mark warming in time with the roar of the blaze.

I hear Elara’s voice in my mind — Choose the ground you fight on. I think maybe I already have.

The crowd begins to break, wolves peeling away in twos and threes, the sound of their voices rolling into the crisp air. Nyx gives me a slow nod from across the clearing. Elara holds my gaze for a beat, then turns to Cassius.

And Kieran… he hasn’t moved. He stands where he was, eyes fixed on me, molten gold and steady as stone.

It’s not a smile he wears, not exactly, but there’s a promise in it. The kind that doesn’t need words. The kind that says he’ll wait as long as it takes.

I touch the mark on my wrist. It glows like an ember — not consuming, not demanding, just waiting. Waiting for me to decide.
