Chapter 86: Chapter 86
The explosion above them sent a deafening rumble through the halls. Dust and debris cascaded like a deadly waterfall. Eliasa pressed closer into Romans solid frame her heart hammering against her ribs. The primordial entity inside her chest coiled tighter twisting with vicious intent. It whispered promises of effortless victory if only she would surrender control. She clenched her jaw refusing to yield even as fresh pain lanced through her veins.
"We cannot stay here." Romans voice cut through the chaos low and commanding. He adjusted his grip on her keeping her plush body securely against his broad chest. "The courtyard is our only path to the surface. Silvia take point. Darius cover the rear. Lucien watch for spells from above."
Silvia wiped blood from her blade her doll like eyes flashing with determination. "As you command my king. But these guards are enhanced beyond anything we faced below. They move like they have nothing left to lose."
"Exactly why we end them swiftly." Darius replied his golden eyes scanning the crumbling corridor. His fortress like build shielded Nyra who leaned against him her breathing ragged. "Nyra can you manage another shield? Just enough to buy us seconds."
Nyra nodded weakly her voice a hoarse whisper. "I will try. For the queen. But the magic drains me faster now. The entity she carries disrupts the flows around us."
Eliasa lifted her head her blue eyes meeting Luciens crimson gaze. "Father. Tell me the truth. Is there any way to contain this thing without losing myself completely? I feel it pushing every second. Like it wants to swallow everything I am."
Lucien blurred to her side deflecting a stray shard of falling stone with preternatural speed. "My daughter the seal was always meant for your bloodline. It recognizes you as its vessel but it tests your will. Hold to love as your anchor. Rage will only feed it. Remember the moments that made you fight this far."
Roman growled his pale green eyes darkening as his wolf stirred close to the surface. "She will not face this alone. Eliasa listen to me. You are not that scared girl they tried to break anymore. You are my queen. Our bond has survived rejection and curses. It will survive this."
A surge of warmth spread through the fractured mate bond easing some of the agony in her body. She managed a small smile despite the fear clawing at her throat. Her short black curls clung damply to her forehead and her freckled pale skin flushed with effort. The oversized sweater hung torn around her soft curvaceous frame a stark reminder of how far she had come from the insecure omega everyone dismissed. Yet doubt lingered. Could she truly master this power without becoming the monster Denver wanted her to be?
Another roar echoed from the shadows. A fresh wave of elite guards charged forward their scar slashed leader at the helm. "The tribrid blood is ours." The beta snarled leveling his glowing spear. "Hand her over Cain and we may let you die with honor. Resist and we carve every ounce of power from her soft flesh while you watch."
"Over my dead body." Roman set Eliasa down gently against a stable pillar freeing both arms. His muscled scarred physique tensed visibly through the tatters of his formal wear. He lunged forward in a blur meeting the first attacker with a devastating claw strike. Blood sprayed hot across the stone floor.
Silvia spun into the fray her blade whistling through the air. "You picked the wrong side fools. The queen rises today and you fall." She dispatched one guard with a precise thrust then pivoted to block a blow aimed at Darius.
Darius planted his feet like an unyielding wall his dry humor cutting through the tension even now. "They never learn do they? Always underestimating the chubby omega who turned out to be our salvation." He swung a heavy fist crushing a guards ribcage while keeping Nyra protected behind him.
Eliasa summoned her remaining strength channeling silver crimson energy through the bond. It flowed into Roman sealing gashes along his shoulder and arm. The effort made her vision blur and her plump legs tremble. "I will not be their experiment anymore." She whispered fiercely. "Not yours. Not Denvers. No ones."
A guard slipped past the defensive line slashing toward her side. Pain bloomed sharp and fiery as claws raked her arm. She cried out but refused to fall. Instead she pushed back with a burst of witch magic. Ethereal vines of light erupted from the floor wrapping around the attackers legs and yanking them off balance.
Roman roared in shared fury wheeling back to her. "Eliasa stay with me. Do not let it take you." He crushed the offending guard against the wall with brutal force then pulled her close again. His voice softened just for her amid the din. "I know you hate how vulnerable this body feels. But it houses the strongest heart I have ever known. I was a fool to push you away. Let me protect you now as I should have from the start."
Tears stung her eyes mixing with the sweat and dust on her face. "You hurt me Roman. Publicly. Cruelly. Yet here you are carrying me through hell. How do I trust that after everything?"
"Because the bond does not lie." He murmured his breath warm against her curls. "And because I am terrified of losing you more than any curse. You make the madness quiet. You make me want to live beyond twenty five. Fight with me now my queen."
The ceiling groaned louder massive cracks spiderwebbing across it. Nyra raised her hands with a desperate chant creating a shimmering barrier just as huge fragments plummeted. The shield held but flickered under the strain. "We must move." She gasped. "The structure will not last."
Lucien tore through two more guards his fangs flashing. "She is right. The surface war rages hotter. I sense more loyalists converging but also Denvers remnants desperate for one final strike. Eliasa conserve your power. The entity grows bolder near the surface where the old seals weaken."
They pushed forward as a unit navigating the treacherous lower halls. Every step sent jolts through Eliasas body. Her soft form protested the constant motion yet she drew strength from Romans steady presence. Conversations flew between them keeping morale alive amid the suspense.
"Tell me about the courtyard." Eliasa asked breathlessly as they rounded a corner. "What awaits us there?"
Roman kept one arm around her waist guiding her. "The heart of the academy. Where East and West once clashed openly. If we reach it we can rally the loyal forces. End this division once and for all."
Silvia glanced back her red hair whipping with movement. "And claim victory. I lost my mate to shadows like these years ago. I will not lose this fight. You give us hope queen. A real one."
Darius chuckled darkly even as he struck down another foe. "Hope wrapped in curves and power. Who would have thought the scholarship girl would rewrite our world? Keep pushing Eliasa. We are almost there."
A new explosion rocked the academy closer this time. The walls shuddered violently. Hybrids and enhanced guards poured from side passages their numbers overwhelming. The air thickened with smoke and the metallic scent of blood. Eliasa felt the entity surge again its hunger aligning with the violence. Visions of destruction flooded her mind. She could end it all release the power and watch Golden Throne burn as revenge for every insult every rejection every year of starvation and pain.
"No." She said aloud forcing the images away. "I choose differently."
One hybrid broke through lunging directly at her with violet eyes blazing. Roman intercepted it but not before its claws grazed her thigh. Agony flared hot and she staggered. The bond pulsed wildly sharing the torment. Roman snarled tearing the creature apart with raw fury. "Stay behind me love. I will not let them touch you again."
Lucien appeared beside her his voice urgent. "Daughter the entity senses your doubt. It feeds on the old wounds. Speak them if you must but do not let them rule you."
Eliasa leaned on Roman her blue eyes locking with his pale green ones. "All my life they called me weak. Wolfless. Worthless because of this body. My foster father starved me. Roman you humiliated me in front of everyone. Yet I stand here. I absorbed that monster below. I will not break now."
"You never were weak." Roman replied his tone fierce and tender. "I saw your strength from the moment you arrived. Bullying you was the worst mistake of my life. It was fear not hatred. Fear of the prophecy. Fear of dragging you into my cursed fate. But you proved stronger than all of it. Forgive me later. Survive now."
The group burst into a wider antechamber leading to the central courtyard. Bodies from both sides littered the floor. Distant howls and clashes echoed louder. Loyalists spotted them and rallied with shouts. "The king and queen. Hold the line."
But Denvers final remnants surged in greater force a desperate last stand. Their leader a towering hybrid twisted by serums bellowed. "The tribrid is the key. Take her and the sovereign rises. Cain falls today."
The battle exploded anew. Steel clashed with claws. Magic crackled through the air. Silvia fought like a whirlwind her blade a deadly dance. "For the queen. Push them back."
Darius coordinated strikes his voice steady. "Flank them. Nyra shield the center."
Eliasa channeled healing through the bond mending Romans wounds even as her own body ached. Her plump frame trembled with exhaustion but resolve burned brighter. Rocks fell from above threatening to crush them. The entity roared inside her tempting her with release.
Roman pulled her into a brief embrace amid the fray. "Together Eliasa. Always together."
A massive enhanced guard charged their position spear aimed at her heart. Time seemed to slow. Eliasa raised a barrier of light just in time. The impact jarred her to her core. Pain and power warred within. She poured everything into the defense her love for Roman her hope for a new future overriding the ancient hunger.
The barrier held then flared outward knocking back attackers. Cheers rose from their allies. But the ceiling above the courtyard entrance buckled dangerously. More enemies poured in their eyes wild with fanaticism.
"We end this now." Roman declared his voice carrying across the chaos. He lifted her once more carrying her toward the courtyard heart. "The Golden Throne will have its queen."
Eliasa clung to him her heart full of defiance and fragile hope. The path ahead shimmered with uncertainty. Victory hovered agonizingly close yet sacrifice loomed in every shadow. Enemies closed in from all sides the ground trembled and the entity tested her limits. In this crucible of blood and fate she vowed silently to rise. For herself. For her mate. For the future they might still claim.
The final clash awaited in the courtyard where the war would decide everything. United they pressed on bound by unbreakable will as the academy itself seemed to hold its breath for the outcome.
