Chapter 202
The war was a maelstrom of steel and blood, tearing through the heart of the Blood Crescent pack.
The war had begun in full force. The chaos was heart-wrenching. It seemed Rashka's army had one assignment - destroy everything that made up the Blood Crescent pack.
They were not soldiers fighting for honor or glory; they were instruments of destruction, their eyes burning with a cold, inhuman light. They tore down buildings with savage glee, their laughter echoing through the chaos.
Women and children screamed, fear consuming them.
The Ashkais barely had the time to fight. It was almost like they weren't scared to die.
Of course, they weren't. Not that they were actual wolves. They were just Rashka's twisted creations.
"Protect whatever you can! We can't lose all our homes!" Randall yelled into the air as he lounged at one of the Ashkais who was headed toward the homes for the elderly.
Alpha Parthe had sent about a thousand warriors. His armies could never be killed by mere blades, which made them unique. But it seemed Rashka's warriors came prepared. Their swords were able to slice through and kill some of Parthe's warriors.
This wasn't looking good.
As the battle raged, a chilling realization dawned on Randall. Where was the mastermind behind this carnage? He should have been leading his army, reveling in the destruction he had wrought. But he was nowhere to be seen. It was as though he was watching from the shadows, pulling the strings of this horrific puppet show.
"Where's Rashka?" Randall muttered under his breath, his eyes scanning the battlefield. Despite the devastation his army was causing, Rashka himself was nowhere to be seen. "Why isn't he here leading his forces?"
Fear almost drowned Randall's heart. What was Rashka planning? What other horrors did he have in store for the Blood Crescent pack?
"Randall, we need to focus," Klara said, pulling him out of his thoughts. "He's playing games with us. We have to be smart about this."
Suddenly, a piercing scream cut through the noise. Randall turned to see a group of Ashkais converging on a cluster of homes where the women and children had taken refuge. "No!" he roared, charging toward them.
Klara followed, her blades flashing as she cut down two Ashkais that blocked their path. "We need to get them to safety!" she yelled.
Randall reached the homes just as the Ashkais broke through the flimsy barricades. He swung his sword with a desperate ferocity, cutting down one after another. "Get back! Protect the children!" he shouted to the defenders who had joined him.
He turned to Klara, "Take them somewhere else!"
She didn't hesitate. She signaled the women and children to follow her as the warriors prevented the Ashkais from touching them. Although it didn't seem like the Ashkais intended to touch women and children, but they didn't want to take chances.
Soon, Klara was back. She fought fiercely. She had managed to take the women and children into the inner courtroom of the Alpha. At least they would be safe there for now. All they had to do was make sure no Ashkai goes in that direction.
Her twin blades danced through the air, cutting down any enemy foolish enough to cross her path. She glanced over at Randall, who was fighting with a desperation she had never seen before. "Randall! We need to regroup and fortify the defenses around the homes and the courtroom!" she shouted, her voice barely audible over the din of battle.
Randall nodded, blood and sweat mingling on his face. "Form a defensive line around the vital areas! We can't let them destroy everything!" he bellowed, rallying his warriors to his side.
"Alpha, what are we going to do? They seem to be more dangerous than we thought." One of the younger warriors, barely more than a boy, asked, his voice shaking with fear.
"We fight. We protect our home and our people. We don't let them take everything from us," Randall replied, his voice firm despite the chaos around him.
"We need more weapons. They are more than mere swords, Alpha!" Xular yelled into the Alpha's ears, and his bones weakened.
They were out of weapons. The only weapons they had on this field were the ones all the warriors had in their sheaths before the war began. Their armory had been brought down.
"We need to make use of what we have, Xular. We don't have a choice," Klara said when she found out that Randall was at a loss for words.
Xular nodded and kept fighting, his fingers giving way to claws, and so did other wolves. They gave partial control to their wolves.
In the midst of the chaos, Torreas, Travn, and Cariton returned from their search for Reyana. "Alpha, we haven't found her!" Torreas shouted, his voice filled with frustration and worry.
Randall's heart sank, but he couldn't afford to lose focus. "Keep looking! She has to be somewhere!"
Randall looked up to see another army approaching from the western border. Alpha Parthe's reinforcements had arrived. Relief washed over him like a cool breeze in the scorching heat of battle. "Parthe's reinforcements are here! Hold the line!" he shouted.
The tide of battle began to shift as the combined strength of Blood Crescent and Parthe's forces pushed back Rashka's warriors. Randall felt a surge of hope.
Just as they thought they had hope, they saw another army emerging from the eastern horizon. Dust clouds rose, obscuring the sun, and the ground trembled under the weight of thousands of approaching soldiers. Randall's breath seized when his gaze rested on a cruel version of himself riding at the forefront.
It was him... His twin... Whom he thought he had killed for so many years.
Hearing about Rashka was one thing. But seeing him now, face-to-face, was something else. He saw the huge scar on Rashka's face. He remembered so vividly. He had sliced his brother's face years ago... All for what? Power. The scar remained, almost disfiguring the handsome face he used to know.
Randall's heart pounded in his chest, a mix of fear, disbelief, and guilt washing over him. So it was true? Rashka...? Tears stung the side of his eyes. Was it tears of guilt? Shame? Regret? He couldn't tell.
Rashka's eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto Randall's with a ferocity that sent chills down his spine.
Beside Rashka, mounted on a black steed, was Reyana. Randall's heart sank at the sight of her. How did she get to him? How did she leave the pack within such a short period? She was right there, creating chaos. He had seen her with his eyes.
Her face was a mask of chaos and darkness, her eyes void of the warmth and kindness he once knew. She seemed almost unrecognizable, her aura radiating malevolence.
He thought it was all a dream when he saw Novak straddling a brown horse beside Rashka and Reyana. Novak had obviously gone back to doing his master's bidding. His eyes held all the anger he had against Randall over the years.
Today, he was going to avenge Letisha, his first love, whom Randall had cruelly killed during one of their semi-wars. Weren't women and children meant to be spared at times like this? But Randall had shamelessly murdered the woman he had loved all to get to him.
Today was a day of reckoning for Randall.
Randall's grip on his sword faltered as memories of the past flooded his mind. The betrayal, the fight, and the moment he thought he had ended Rashka's life. The guilt of that moment resurfaced, paralyzing him with regret.
"Rashka..." Randall muttered, his voice barely a whisper. The name tasted like taboo on his tongue.
The battlefield around him seemed to blur, the sounds of clashing swords and cries of battle fading into the background.
"Randall, focus!" Klara's voice cut through his reverie, but it was too late. An Ashkai, seizing the opportunity, lunged at him with a sword. The blade sliced through his side, and a searing pain jolted him back to reality. Blood gushed from the wound, staining his armor and dripping onto the ground.
Randall staggered, clutching his side as he tried to regain his footing. The pain was excruciating, but it was the sight of Reyana that hurt the most. She watched him with a cold, detached expression as if he were a stranger.
Rashka descended his horse, walking toward the bleeding Randall; his cruel laughter echoed across the battlefield, a sound that made Randall's blood run cold. "Did you really think you could get rid of me that easily, brother?" Rashka taunted, his voice dripping with malice. "I've been waiting for this moment. To see the look on your face when you realize you failed."
