Chapter 59: A strange turn of events!

Ezra

THE NEWS THAT I HAD A MATE ran through the room like a shockwave. It had a much larger effect than I thought it would. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that the stupid council would be affected by this news. Within seconds, they were whispering and the entire meeting turned into chaos. Carlo called it all to order and suggested we all take some time to think about it.

They agreed to give me two more days while they decided about my fate. I had no idea what they would do. All I knew was that if they killed me, it would kill Lilith and the worst part was that her family would never know why she died. I was taken back to my cell. I was so wrapped up in my own problems that I didn’t even notice the Kingpin trying his very best to goad me into a fight.

I had too much on my mind and at the very top of that list was Lilith and what might happen to her. If only I could reject her, then at least she would be safe. I called the guard. I needed to tell Blanca to bring Lilith to me. I had to reject her. It was the only solution. She might feel heartbroken for a little while, but she would get over it. At least, she would be alive.

I was hoping that Blanca would agree but as soon as I told her what I wanted to do she blew up at me. She point blank refused. I didn’t know which hurt more. When Blanca rejected me or when she didn’t want to bring Lilith here so I could save her life! I felt lost! Blanca stormed out and told the guards not to call her again. There was no way I would be able to reject Lilith! I tried to convince the guards to call Carlo for me. Surely, he would understand and help me, but they very quickly informed me that he wasn’t coming.

Blanca had already told him what I wanted to do. I was pushed into a corner and this time there was no getting out of it. Couldn’t they see that I was just trying to save my mate’s life?! Couldn’t they understand?! There was no way the council would ever let me go. There was no way they would allow me to live a happy life with Lilith! None of these damn councils were ever fair!

I wished there was something I could smash in my cell! Something I could rip to shreds! The Kingpin walked closer to the bars that kept us apart. I was seeing red and not hearing one single word of what he was saying. My arms shot out and my hands grabbed hold of him before I could stop myself. I heard the bone snap and only then did I realize I had killed the poor bastard.

He was going to be executed in any case, but as his body dropped to the ground, I instantly feared the worst! There was no way the council would pardon me now!

Blanca

THE NEWS THAT EZRA had killed the Kingpin was truly shocking! I knew he lived a tough life and that he probably did things I would never … I never imagined he would kill the Kingpin! Carlo rushed out of the room without so much as a word. This was going to put all of us in danger!

Ezra killed the Kingpin while he was in our custody! I feared what it might mean not only for Ezra but also for us! Carlo tried his best to keep me updated, but I grew so frustrated that I got dressed and walked downstairs. I was shocked to find that the council had already arrived and were locked in a meeting with Carlo in his office.

I paced back and forth in the foyer. Why were they taking so damn long?! What could they possibly be discussing? My mind refused to admit that it could be Ezra’s execution. I was just about to storm in there when the door flung open and the council left. None of them looked happy. I waited patiently until Carlo finally came back from greeting the council.

“Walk with me,” He sighed, and I took his hand. Carlo led me downstairs to the cells. The Kingpin’s body had been removed, but I was sure I could smell death in there.

“Carlo, what happened?!” I insisted when he came to a halt in front of the cells.

“The council has decided not to execute Ezra.” Carlo took a deep breath and looked at Ezra. “If you promise to take over the Kingpin’s business and turn it into a legal business.” I gasped and my eyes shot from Carlo to Ezra. Since Ezra basically killed the alpha of the pack … That made him their new alpha! I hadn’t even thought of that! Ezra had changed from a rogue to an alpha in one snap! Ezra gaped at Carlo and then looked at the rest of the men in the cells. They mumbled and then the one who seemed to be in charge now nodded at Ezra.

“I promise.” Ezra sighed. I frowned. I couldn’t think that a promise was good enough, surely!

“Of course, the council will require proof eventually, but for now we are allowed to let you all go.” Carlo nodded in the direction of our guards and I was completely stunned! If I had thought this would work, I would have suggested it right from the start! It couldn’t possibly have been this simple! The men slowly filed out of the cell and Ezra gave them some orders before turning to look at us.

“Thank you for everything you did.” He shook Carlo’s hand and I felt as though it was actually very anti-climactic! Here I was thinking I would miraculously save Ezra and bring him and Lil together and we would all live happily ever after!!
