Chapter 68

, Kaelan's POV

The next day when I woke up, I smiled at the lady in my bed before walking out silently, wanting her to keep sleeping if she was still asleep. I didn't have much work to do now, but I needed to commission a couple of people first. Most importantly, I would have to change the men guarding the gates and replace them with a new set of people, just in case the attack that was revealed to me yesterday would happen anytime soon.

I wasn't about to let myself be caught off guard, especially after I had already heard about it. I was going to take proactive steps, active measures in order to make sure that it didn't work out as planned. I told Alex to do everything for me, telling him exactly what I wanted. I wanted the new men positioned there to know that their lives depended on it. If anyone got through the gates in the next couple of days, they would be the ones to pay with their own lives. I needed them to understand what was at stake.

It was a rightful punishment because, honestly speaking, I felt they would be the ones held responsible if things went wrong, considering how much was placed on them and how many people would die if things didn't go well. If they let the rogue wolves enter, there was no telling how many people they would kill before they finally disappeared. I wasn't going to let that happen, so I needed to be proactive and ready to stop it from taking place as soon as possible. Alex nodded at me in agreement, and I relaxed.

I would go to the army when I was free after breakfast, and then I would talk with the general and assign the people who were going to join up with the people from the Mystic Moon Pack. We needed to have a united front because I knew already that the rogues wouldn't stop at nothing. This was a very big setback for them, but that didn't mean they were going to give up just because of that. They would continue fighting, so I needed to be ready to apprehend them whenever they came at me. The alliance with Alphazanda was still very important to me now and wasn't obsolete yet, so there was no reason for me to discard it.

Lana showed up, rubbing her eyes with her hand before looking at me and smiling. Memories of what happened last night came to me, and I laughed a little. "Come here," I stated and took her up in my arms.

"Are you already working?" she asked me, frowning like she wanted me to suddenly relax and stop doing everything.

I smiled at her, unable to really stop myself, but I spoke seriously. "Yes, I'm working already, and you know that things haven't changed yet. Until this place is better, I will have to keep working relentlessly."

She pouted, and I responded, "Don't worry, soon enough we will go to the capital after everything has settled down, and then we can continue living our normal lives without anybody to disturb us anymore."

She seemed to like it, and I smiled, liking it even more than she did. All I wanted was for all this to be over, but unfortunately, I couldn't get that desire of mine. I simply wouldn't get it until I had managed to quell the threats and the rising dangers around the park in general. They were just rogues; I knew they didn't really have a leader or agency, so they couldn't fully stand their ground against us. Sooner or later, we would defeat them, and then they would finally go back into the shadows where they came from and stay there for the next couple of hundred years.

I had to tell her simply, my face lit with a smile. She nodded at me before pulling away. "Since you are busy, I guess I should go back to my work right now."

I had to smile. "That's why you deserve a great education," I said. "You have realized how much you helped us with your delivery of information to your students," I continued, nodding at her in approval. "I don't know how much the people would have suffered if the gates were actually breached by the traitors and the rogue wolves came in. It would have been a very brutal fight. We might have won, of course, but at what cost? You've saved us a lot, I think," I assured her.

She smiled. "Why, thank you," she told me. She sounded quite fulfilled and happy at her accomplishment, but she didn't seem like she was about to take my advice and rest after accomplishing something so good. "It's nice that you think that I have done a lot," she told me, "but that doesn't mean that I can relax. You aren't relaxing now, are you?" she questioned.

I frowned, thinking about it. Come to think of it, no, I wasn't. She nodded, and she wasn't either, she told me simply. I thought about this for a while before letting her continue. I think it wasn't a bad idea. I was pretty sure that later on, she would probably come up with something helpful for us to use to our advantage once again. The thought of it filled me with anticipation. Somehow, this new job that she had gave her a lot of things that she could do to help me and the pack in general, and any surprise could come up at any moment from her research.

She was off already, and so I decided that I needed to do the same. Since she was already so interested in working, I really should take the initiative also and support her in the best way I possibly could by doing my own part in this endeavor we were both entwined in to rule our pack.

I went over to the army like I had wanted to do previously, but this time around, it was with enthusiasm. Somehow, the words I had with her had fired me up to that point. I didn't even feel hungry anymore. I just wanted to work and get my job done so that we could finally live here and be at peace with each other the way it had been before the interference of the rogues in the first place.

I met the army general at his barracks training the soldiers as usual. Some soldiers were fighting in dueling rings while others were doing workout routines that looked very stringent even from here. A couple of others were throwing stunts and doing flexibility exercises while, to my surprise, a few of them were playing basketball.

"Basketball?" I asked the general, approaching him with a frown on my face.

"Oh," he responded. He looked a little panicked, but I could tell that he wasn't going to show it any more than he had for a split second there, due to his training and his mission to always remain calm at all times. "It's recreational," he told me like I didn't know already. "Another way of exercising instead of simply resting and sleeping. I decided that I can allow it," he continued.

I raised up a hand. If he thought it was good for them, it was probably not a bad idea anyway. I wasn't completely against soldiers resting after a long day's work.

"Do you know why I'm here?" I asked him.

He looked at me apprehensively. "No idea," he said.

"I want to take a division of soldiers," I told him. He looked like he would be glad to give me anybody at the moment, so I smiled a little. He was just as I expected him to be, but still, the way he sucked up to me was annoying.

"Select your finest men," I told him. "They are going to be working with Alpha Zander of the Mystic Moon Pack, so I would require people who are very strong and also very fast. Above everything, I want them to have the ability to work with others and get a job done in collaboration with people that they have probably not worked with before at all," I told him. "Can you get me such men?" I questioned.

"Of course," he said. "I already have a couple of suggestions, but I'll select them all for you since I know them more than you do."

"Good," I said in approval. With him going about it like this, I could be sure that I was going to get the best possible men for this job, and it wasn't going to even take me a lot of time to do that.

I went over to an office at the side, deciding to rest there until he got ready. Taking a deep breath, I started reading through a newspaper, one that reported all the activities of the park over the past couple of days. It was interesting news, but I found myself a little surprised at some of the events. Maybe I hadn't known everything about the park after all, and there were still a lot of things that were hidden from me.
