Chapter 156: That witch

“This partnership with Belle might be one of the most amazing things. We are sailing now. Even the Moon Goddess seems to be on our side,” Elena, my wolf, exclaimed.

That's right. Damn that May for lying to me about how trying to heal me would cause a backlash. It was all a lie after all.

I can't wait to heal and slap May in the face. Despite all May's plans, it ended up being a waste because of love. Love...

My heart ached. I had it and chose to throw it all away because of my stupidity.

“Is Stephen worthy of Belle?”

“He might,” Elena responded.

“If she was patient, she could have enjoyed everything later on. I had no doubt that someone arrogant like Stephen would want to lose Belle out of carelessness. But she was insecure and afraid that he would fall in love with us later. It could only mean that their love wasn't strong in the first place,” I whispered.

“And that's precisely what helped us. Yet it seems Belle is also playing it safe,” my wolf whispered, speaking the exact words I was about to say.

“She could have chosen to start the healing process, but she shifted it to tomorrow.”

I shrugged. “Well, it's a big risk for her too. She has already proved her loyalty. Meanwhile, I still haven't given her any signs.”

“Interesting. How shocked would she be when she realizes that your wolf had long awakened and you have known more about what's already going on?” My wolf chuckled.

I chuckled and walked around the room, enjoying the feeling.

It had been a while since I was able to walk. Being on my feet felt incredible.

It made me want to walk around for days to celebrate, but not yet... I can't stir May's suspicion.

I sat down at the edge of the bed and carefully continued reading while practicing.

The more I practiced, the more I got the hang of things. It was getting exciting.

Originally, I had a great brain that could assimilate things easily.

By the time I finished the pile of books, it was close to dinner time.

I lay on the bed and pretended to still be the weak girl I was.

It wasn't even thirty minutes before the girl from earlier pushed the door open.

Without looking me in the eyes, she placed the meal down and turned to leave. This character seemed so creepy.

“Wait!” I called, making her pause in her tracks. “Take it all away.” I pointed at the books.

She paused. She stared at the books before looking back at me.

“I have read them all. Bring me new ones.”

I knew she was confused about why I was returning the books.

She had brought them late in the afternoon, and now it was early evening, yet I had finished the entire pile.

But she wouldn't understand. I was used to solving piles of complex pack documents within hours. And even if Beta Eric tried to stop me, he wouldn't—

Wait. Wait. Where did that come from?

I fell into a trance. Why does it seem that since May gave me that memory loss concoction, I have begun to speak out chunks of my memories?

I didn't know when the girl left with the books. I was too bothered with my own internal problem to care.

“I guess we shall regard it as a good thing,” my wolf said.

“There's a problem,” I replied. “I'm finding the whole recovery very slow for a hybrid.”

“I also think there's a problem with our recovery speed. Perhaps May did something too?”

My eyes turned cold. “That witch. Just how far would she go?”

I took a deep breath to regain control over my surging emotions. My hand tapped my chin.

“Only if I could create a healing potion.”

Whatever May had been feeding me all this time must be a useless potion disguised as a healing potion.

May must be trying to make sure my loyalty lies with her before growing my strength.

When I couldn't make use of my legs, I could still push things aside with the thought that I would deal with it once I regained mobility.

But now that my legs were fully functional, I didn't want to stay tied to this room.

At most, I would stay here for a week.

I don't know what's going on, but I can't wait to find out.

The girl returned to the room carrying more books.

I sighed in relief upon seeing that not all of them were picture books. I guess she had no choice since I had almost read them all.

“Hey. I need a healing potion. Get me one.” I looked at her straight in the eyes.

She looked flustered. “I don't know about that. The nurse will bring your concoction at the right time.”

With that, she fled.

My lips curved up. Just how far does May's power in the witch clan reach? Nobody wanted to talk to me. If it wasn't for Belle...

It wasn't even fifteen minutes before May stepped into my room. I guessed the girl must have told her whatever I said.

My lips curved up. Expected.

May stepped forward, her voice soft and filled with concern.

“How did you find the books?”

“These are for kids. I should be a top-level witch. Why should I read books like this?” I spoke like a bratty princess.

May looked stunned for a moment, but she quickly recovered.

“Right now, you have to take things slowly. You were given wolfsbane that completely extinguished your power. You must build your strength step by step.”

“Why?” I tilted my head. “I could just take a detox and a healing potion and it should go away, shouldn't it?”

May looked uncomfortable. I could see that she preferred pushing me around instead of answering my questions.

“No, Princess Elena. The bane has ruined your system. You could get a backlash if you cast heavy spells.”

She sighed.

“Elena, I am doing this all for you. You don't want to get stuck in the future and regret it. Just follow my lead.”

Her voice was soft, and her face was filled with sincerity, as if she truly cared for me.
