Chapter 25: Secrets From Beyond
Aidan's head throbbed as he slowly opened his eyes. A dim light swung above him, casting strange shadows across unfamiliar walls. He tried to move but found his hands tied behind his back.
"He's awake," someone whispered.
Blinking to clear his vision, Aidan saw Asher and Elijah similarly bound to chairs nearby. Blood trickled down Elijah's temple, and Asher's eye was swollen shut.
"Where are we?" Aidan croaked, his mouth dry.
"Basement of the summer house," Elijah answered, his voice tight with pain. "Audrey brought us here after she knocked you out."
The memory flooded back—Audrey standing over him, gun in hand, wearing their father's cold smile.
"I can't believe she's working for Victor," Aidan muttered.
"None of us saw it coming," Asher said. "She played us perfectly."
The sound of footsteps on stairs made them all go quiet. The door swung open, and Alex stepped into the room, followed by a battered Maya.
"Untie them," Alex ordered someone behind him.
To their surprise, Audrey appeared, looking nervous as she moved to cut their ropes.
"What's going on?" Elijah demanded as his hands were freed. "First she knocks us out, now she's helping us?"
Alex crossed his arms. "It was a test. We needed to be sure you weren't the spies."
"A test?" Asher stood up, rubbing his wrists. "You beat us up for a test?"
"I'm sorry," Audrey said, tears in her eyes. "I had to make it look real in case Victor was watching."
"Victor was watching," Maya confirmed, wincing as she touched her split lip. "He had cameras hidden throughout the marina. Alex spotted them just in time."
Aidan stared at them in disbelief. "So none of you are working for our father?"
"Not anymore," Alex said grimly. "But someone was. We needed to flush them out."
"And did you?" Elijah asked, standing protectively close to the twins.
Alex pulled out a phone and showed them footage of the marina parking lot. In it, they could see a familiar figure meeting with Victor's security chief.
"Carter Enterprises Head of Security," Maya said. "He's been tracking my phone since this started."
Aidan looked at the bruises on Maya's face. "What happened to you?"
"I volunteered to be the bait," she explained. "Made it look like I'd been captured. When Victor's men came to grab me, Alex took them out."
"We've been two steps ahead this whole time," Alex added. "But Victor's closing in. We don't have much time left."
Asher wasn't convinced. "Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us the plan?"
"Because your reactions needed to be real," Audrey explained. "Victor knows you too well. He would have seen through any act."
Aidan's head was spinning. "So what now?"
Maya straightened up, suddenly looking more focused. "Now we get what we came for. The evidence your mother left behind."
"It's not here," Alex said, shaking his head. "I've searched every inch of this house over the years. There's nothing."
"That's because she never kept it here," Maya replied. "Your mother was smarter than that. She kept it somewhere Victor would never look."
"Where?" Elijah asked.
Maya smiled despite her injuries. "A safe deposit box at First National Bank. In my mother's name."
The group fell silent, processing this new information.
"Your mother?" Asher finally asked.
"Catherine Carter was best friends with my mother," Maya explained. "When she suspected Victor might harm her, she gave my mother a key and made her promise to pass it to her sons when the time was right."
"And you've had this key all along?" Aidan couldn't hide his shock.
Maya pulled a chain from around her neck, revealing an old-fashioned key. "I was waiting until I knew I could trust you completely. Until I was sure Victor hadn't gotten to you."
"First National Bank closed years ago," Alex pointed out.
"The main branch did," Maya agreed. "But the downtown location is still open. We need to go there. Now."
Within thirty minutes, they had loaded into two cars and were speeding toward the city. Dawn was breaking as they pulled up several blocks from the bank, parking in an underground garage to avoid street cameras.
"Victor will have people watching the bank," Elijah warned as they gathered to plan their approach.
"That's why we're splitting up," Maya said. "Audrey and I will create a diversion. Alex will handle security. You three," she pointed to Aidan, Asher, and Elijah, "will access the box."
She handed Aidan the key and a small piece of paper. "Box number 1512. You'll need ID."
"We don't have ID," Asher reminded her.
Maya pulled out three fake driver's licenses. "These should work."
As they prepared to separate, Aidan pulled Maya aside. "Why didn't you tell us about this sooner?"
Maya's eyes softened. "Your mother made my mother promise to wait until her sons were ready to face the truth. All of it." She glanced meaningfully at Elijah. "She knew things would get complicated."
At exactly 9:01 AM, they put their plan into motion. Audrey staged a loud argument with Maya near the bank's front entrance, drawing the attention of security and any potential watchers. Alex disabled the back door alarm, allowing the three men to slip in unnoticed.
Inside, they moved quickly to the safe deposit vault. The bank employee barely glanced at their fake IDs before leading them to box 1512.
Once alone in the viewing room, Aidan's hands trembled as he inserted the key. The metal box slid out smoothly, surprisingly heavy.
"Go ahead," Elijah said softly. "It's your mother's legacy."
Aidan lifted the lid to reveal several folders, a USB drive, a small jewelry box, and an envelope with "For my sons" written in elegant handwriting.
"Her handwriting," Asher whispered, touching the envelope reverently.
Aidan opened it first, unfolding the pages with care. Both brothers leaned in to read:
My dearest boys,
If you're reading this, then I am gone, and you have finally found each other. Yes, all three of you. Aidan and Asher, my beautiful sons, and Elijah, my beloved nephew who I cherished as my own.
The truth is both simpler and more complicated than you know. Victor is not the man I thought I married. He built his empire on lies, theft, and blood. The evidence in this box will prove his crimes—including what he did to my sister Elena.
Elena and I discovered together what Victor was capable of. When she threatened to expose him, he made her disappear. I pretended to believe she had run away, but secretly helped her create a new identity. She was pregnant then—with Elijah.
I've spent years gathering evidence against Victor, waiting for the right moment to bring him down. But I fear he has discovered my plans. If something happens to me, know that it was not an accident.
There is one more secret I must share. Victor is not acting alone. He has a partner whose identity I've only recently discovered. This person is the true architect of Victor's rise to power, and they will stop at nothing to protect what they've built.
The necklace in the jewelry box belongs to all three of you. It contains the final piece of evidence—and the key to understanding everything.
Trust each other. Protect each other. And remember that family is about love, not blood.
All my love, Mom
Asher wiped tears from his eyes as Aidan reached for the small jewelry box. Inside was a gold locket engraved with the initials "CM."
"Catherine Mercer," Elijah said quietly. "Her maiden name."
Aidan opened the locket to find a tiny key and a microchip.
"What is this?" he wondered.
"The key to understanding everything," Elijah quoted from the letter.
A sudden commotion outside the vault made them all freeze. Through the glass, they could see bank employees rushing about in panic.
"Something's wrong," Asher said, gathering the contents of the box quickly.
The viewing room door burst open. Alex stood there, breathless. "Victor's here," he gasped. "And he's not alone."
"Who's with him?" Aidan demanded, tucking the locket into his pocket.
Alex's face went pale. "Dr. Mercer. The man who signed all our birth certificates."
"Mom's letter mentioned a partner," Asher realized.
"We need to go," Elijah urged. "Now."
As they raced toward the emergency exit, a familiar voice called out behind them.
"Boys! Stop right there!"
They turned to see Victor Carter standing at the vault entrance, looking immaculate in his custom suit. Beside him stood an elderly man with cold eyes.
"Hello, Catherine's boys," Dr. Mercer said, smiling thinly. "It's time we had a proper family reunion."
Victor stepped forward, his gaze fixed on the locket in Aidan's hand. "That belongs to me."
"No," came a voice from behind them. "It belongs to her sons."
Maya appeared at the emergency exit, gun raised. "And to the truth."
Dr. Mercer laughed, the sound sending chills down Aidan's spine. "The truth? My dear, you have no idea what the truth is." He turned to Victor. "Should we tell them? About what really happened that night at the lake house?"
Victor's face drained of color. For the first time in their lives, the twins saw something they never expected to see in their father's eyes.
Fear.
