Chapter 77: The Book
‘Noah told me I have to accompany you in going somewhere’ After I and Caleb were done with having our own time in his office, I rushed into our room to take hot shower. My muscles were sore but at the touch of hot water I was now feeling better.
After getting ready to go to council, I left our portion and came on second floor for Caleb office to confirm if he had asked Noah to send Adrian but seeing him already wandering on the floor lazily, I smiled.
‘Yup, we are going to council’ his eyes widened in surprise.
‘Why?’ in a second, he was close to me.
‘Don’t tell me it is because of death of Uncle Victor, have they summoned you or Alpha Caleb for explanation?’ he whispered, his eyes carefully watching the surrounding. I pursed my lips to hide the smile that wanted to pop up on my lips. It was my first time to talk to him alone, before this except greetings we did not have any conversation, and I hadn’t realized he has such a humorous personality.
‘Maybe?’ I shrugged my shoulders and walked to Caleb’s office when the door was pushed open and he came out with Noah behind him. He winked at me, I wasn’t expecting him to do that in front of Adrian, but what can I say, he did. My mate is too shameful than I expected him to be.
‘Ready to leave?’ he asked and I squinted my eyes at him and hummed as a response.
‘Adrian, you have to be with her, protect her. I won’t be easy on you if I saw a small scratch on her’ I rolled my eyes at his threatening tone.
‘Don’t worry Alpha Caleb, I will protect her with my life’ His serious voice forced me to turn my head and glare at him.
‘I am not a child, I can protect myself in fact don’t you guys forget that I was the one who forced witches to pull back’ I shoved my hands in my jean’s pocket and lifted my neck in proud, but I was pulled by Caleb and fell into his arms after losing my balance.
‘Caleb’ I gritted his name between my teeth when he chuckled.
‘Stay safe and if there is any threat come back immediately. You don’t have to fight alone with them okay’ I gave him confused stare, was he hiding something from me? Is someone gonna attack us?
Anyways, with these questions kept hitting on my mind, I started my journey with Adrian and following the direction on map we reached the council in couple of hours.
‘You didn’t tell me why we are here?’ Closing the door of the car, Adrian repeated his question and I sighed.
‘To find a book’ I walked towards the reception to introduce myself and my purpose of visit.
‘Book? Why? For What? Which one? Is it that important?’ He came after me, asking back-to-back questions. I ignored him and smiled at the young girl at reception.
‘Hi, my name is Lilith’ I paused, deliberately, because, after learning about my real parents I never give it a thought that what last name should I use anymore. Oberon isn’t my father so using his is absurd, but can I use my real father’s name? I was debating and hesitating on completing my name when the girl smiled and nodded her head.
‘Yes, Lilith Donovan, Luna of Creek Star Pack’ she typed something on the laptop while finishing my left-out introduction. I was at loss of words! I am pretty sure it is Caleb’s doing and my heart swells at his attention to such minor detail. He might have thought about it and gave his name to me.
‘You still do not accept me as your mate’ my own words repeated in my head, and I shut my eyes in regret. It must have been hurting. I will apologize to him, after returning back to pack I committed it inwardly and took the floor guide from girl and following it, took the turn to first left side.
‘You didn’t tell which book we are looking for’ Adrian was gawking at the frames hanging on the wall, but his mind was still stuck on the book.
‘It’s for Irene’ I stopped in front the large wooden door, on side wall plate hanged with library engraved on it. It looked heavy, I looked at Adrian and he picked the silent message. Pushing both doors with all his strength, we were able to get into the library.
‘Woah! Who makes such a heavy door. You should have brought Isaac with you’ he brushed his hand to clean the dirt.
‘My goodness!’ he mumbled and I had to agree with him. I was standing in awe at the sight of thousands of books racked on the wall from floor to ceiling.
‘It’s mind blowing’ another comment from him and I hummed, moving toward the rack of the book.
‘Adrian help me find the book on White Wolf’ I remembered that I have to find the book as soon as possible, admiring the collection can be done next time. I asked him to help me, but his questions forced me to stop and think.
‘I don’t know the name of book, Uncle Victor said he will send it to me.’ The corner of my lips lowered in sadness.
‘Lilith, he told that he hadn’t read that book but saw it once. Maybe the book has clear title as white wolf or something which could tell it is about us’ Irene was right, I asked Adrian to read the side labels of every book carefully, it will be somewhere here.
‘Ok, I am going to that side, meanwhile you check in this area’ Library was big, and my head pounded at the thought of how tough it’s gonna be to find that book. I started from very right of the door and begin skimming the titles.
‘Lilith’ I was engrossed in reading the titles when Irene’s voice alerted me.
‘What is it?’ I yawned; deep silence and little dark environment was making my eyes droop.
‘We’re not alone’ my body stiffened at the information and though I wanted to spin on my heels and scan the area but she forced me to stay focused and keep acting normally.
‘Who is here?’ I asked.
‘Witches’ and I felt myself feeling cold. Means, Caleb was right, we might have been following.
‘What do we do now?’ I panicked; my instinct was telling me that they have also come here for the book. It makes sense, I failed them in their mission of killing Caleb, so they had to find my weakness to take their revenge. I was biting my lower lip, as my concern grown over and thinking about Adrian, I can’t tell how I was losing my composure, if it wasn’t help from Irene, I would have already made things messed up.
‘Stay calm Lilith. We have to find the book quickly and when you find it, grab it tight and run out of the library.’ Though her suggestion was good, I opposed it.
‘I can’t leave Adrian alone; you know very well what these witches do.’ It’s not old enough that we would forget how they attacked Caleb. I shuddered and licked my lips; my hands were trembling and pupil moving on sides to capture anything unusual happening.
‘Did you forget? He is also from South Hills Pack, Caleb sent him with you because he also hold a unique ability’ I froze. She was right, how come I forgot this crucial thing, I smiled getting a bit relaxed but next second another thought kicked in mind and I was panicking again.
‘I don’t know what is his ability’ Irene chuckled.
‘You’ll see when he will use it. For now, look for the book before they find it.’ I nodded and moved my trembling fingers on the books.
‘Did you find the book?’ I heard Adrian yelling.
‘Nope’ I yelled back, my eyes not leaving the sight of books, I walked past but then stopped, something grazed from my fingers, I stepped back and tried to find what it was, it felt like something pricked on my finger.
‘I felt too, something very strong touched me’ Irene mumbled, my eyes anxiously looking for it again when they locked at one book.
‘Legacy of White Wolf’ I quietly murmured those words and water gathered in my eyes as if something stung into it. The emotions right now were foreign, I was unable to understand them, but they were overwhelming. My hand was tracing the title.
‘Lilith, grab the book and run quick’ Irene shouted in my head and wasting no time I tightened my grip on it and took it out of the shelf, attaching it to my chest as if it was something precious to me. But the moment I pulled the book, a hand appeared in front of my eyes, long nails, skin cling to the bones, no muscle, big dark spots on hand make them look ugly but scary too.
‘Adrian run out of the library, I found the book’ I shouted from the depth of my lungs and ran towards the door but it got closed by its own.
‘Now… Now! Look who is here with us’ The same ugly woman shows up to whom I have seen in Caleb’s office last time and she was the one who attacked my mate. Rage surged in my veins and I clenched my jaw, eyes burning in fury.
