Chapter 68

Adrian

After we headed inside, everyone went their separate ways, some to bed, some to talk. When I got to the room, Rachel and Vanessa were sitting with Zaya.

“She woke up once. We checked her over; we also gave her medicine to drink and rubbed the ointment on her feet already, as Mrs. Wolfe said.” Rachel said.

“Okay, thank you. Why don’t you two go get some rest? It’s already late; leave whatever it is for tomorrow. The others can take care of themselves for tonight.”

“Yes, Mr. Wolfe,” they both answered as they left. Rayna found me sitting by the bed. I looked at her, and she looked tired and drained. Mentally, physically, and emotionally. I pulled her down onto my lap and

just held her. I didn’t need to say anything. After a while she looked at me.

“How are you holding up?”

She sighed. “Honestly better than I thought I would,” she said, then she stood up suddenly.

“You said you didn’t find anything at the school, and the cameras were down, right?” She asked, looking at me.

“Yes, why?”

“It was done. I need Armin and Rob to check if any other kids are sick and cross-reference all the teachers. See if any of them have had any interactions with any of the people that were here. Even if they had an accidental meeting on the street,” she said.

“Okay, it’s already two in the morning. Rob and Armin will look into that as soon as it's daybreak. Let everyone get a chance to rest. You need to get some rest also.”

“I can’t rest, not now, not when she’s like this,” she said, sitting next to Zaya on the bed. Jesus, I almost forgot, I need to give her medicine.” She said, standing up. I grabbed her hand.

“Vanessa and Rachel already took care of her. Rayna, go shower and come take a nap.” She looked like she wanted to say something, but I guess she knew I meant it; she nodded and walked out of the room.

Rayna

I woke up to sunlight in my face; when I sat up, Zaya was asleep next to me. On the other side, Adrian was asleep. I was more tired than I let on, but I had to do this. Now for Camry, she was still in jail waiting for me to get her out. I didn’t need to tell her or explain anything to her, she’ll start to wonder on her own if I really mean what I said. I’m sure Cathy was going to go visit her and let her know what happened.

“Mama?” I heard the little voice, I turned, and she was awake looking at me.

“Morning, baby. Do your feet still itch? Does it still hurt?”

“A bit; the medicine the nice doctor gave makes it less. Can I have chocolate pancakes for breakfast? She asked quietly. Adrian turned and hugged her, snuggling up close to her.

“You can have anything you want, princess,” he said, kissing her forehead.

I gave her a shower, then took a shower and headed down for breakfast. She was already seated between Mira and the grandparents, who were feeding her pancakes. I took a seat and drank my coffee. I saw Rob walking past and was about to call for him.

“I already told him, and Armin knows what to do,” Adrian said, putting a plate in front of me.

After breakfast, they took Zaya—goodness knows where—Adrian left for work, and I left for the penitentiary. I guess Camry needed a decent explanation as to why she would never get out, and as for Cathy, she would understand that if she tried to get Camry out or help her in any way, she would also end up behind bars.

I was halfway to the jail when my phone rang; Lee was calling.

“Yes, Lee?”

“Seriously, Ray, we were away for a few days; didn’t you think to call and tell us what happened to Zaya?” he asked, and I almost let go of the steering wheel and slapped my forehead. Lee and Mason were in Greendale to visit Fred and his mom and take care of some stuff. It completely slipped my mind.

“Wait, where are you?” I asked cautiously.

“Scared, huh? I’m looking at Zaya right now. We’re waiting for you to come back, and then Mason and I will deal with you.” He said,

“Yeah, right. Anyway, I’m heading to the jail to see my sister. Let Mira and the others tell you what happened.”

I ended the call. when I pulled up to the jail. I got out and made my way in. I was sitting there patiently when they brought Camry in. When she saw me, she began smiling.

“So, I guess my information helped you,” she said, taking a seat and smiling.

I waited until the officer left, then smiled. “Yes, your information helped me.”

“So what did the prosecutor say? When is my appeal date?” she asked, and she sounded hopeful.

“Prosecutor? What, Prosecutor? What appeal?. I never had any intention of getting you out. Hope is a dangerous fucking thing, Camry, a very dangerous thing. You toyed with me for half my life and expect me to help you?. Xander and Clarence were never involved in putting you here; I just needed them out of the way, and you did it for me. So predictable? I said, smirking. She jumped up to her feet.

“INMATE 40098, SIT DOWN,” the officer said, and she sat down.

“You fucking bitch,” she said, her voice low and full of hatred.

“Oh please. I was the one that put you here; I made sure I did everything in my power to make sure you never got out. That night at the club when you met Adrian, I drugged you, loaded you up with multiple

types of alcohol and drugs, and took you there and left you there. I paid the prosecutor to make sure you got maximum time. This was for every single time you hurt me, every single lie you told about me, and every single thing of mine that you took. You’re never getting out, and if you do. I’ll make sure you end up right back in here. As it is, Damon Ross is actually your daddy, and Hendrick is divorcing Cathy and wants nothing to do with you. I guess now you know what it feels like to lose everything and not have anyone in your corner because that’s how I felt for the first fifteen years of my life.”

“You… You…” She stammered. I stood up and looked at her.

“Goodbye Camry, I won’t ever return here, and as for Adrian. I was never using him; he was always mine.”

I walked out to her screaming and the guards restraining her. I was done with her; next were Susan and Cathy.
