Chapter 45: Instinct
Fear surged through me like lightning in my veins.
The moment Lucien leaned closer and whispered those words, something inside me snapped. The system triggered reflexively. The familiar blue interface flashed violently across my vision, flooding my sight with urgent red warnings.
\[WARNING: UNSTABLE EMOTIONAL SPIKE\]

I gasped, clutching at my chest. “No… not now… please not now…”
Energy gathered around me without me asking for it. Loose debris on the floor, broken concrete, shattered glass, metal fragments, began lifting slowly into the air, swirling in lazy circles around my body like I had created my own gravity well.
Lucien paused, eyes gleaming with interest. “Yes… that’s it. Let it happen.”
“I don’t know how to control this!” I shouted, panic rising sharp in my throat. My hands shook as more debris rose higher, spinning faster. “It’s just… happening! I’m not doing it on purpose! Make it stop!”
Soren tried to push himself up from the floor. “Elias, breathe! Don’t fight it, but don’t let it take over either! Focus on my voice!”
But I couldn’t focus. The pressure in my chest kept building, heavier and hotter, like the Core had finally found a crack wide enough to pour through. The swirling debris accelerated, pieces of concrete smashing into each other with sharp cracks. The air around me grew thick, charged with raw power.
“I’m scared!” I cried out, tears streaming down my face. “I don’t want this! I don’t want to hurt anyone else! Lucien, stop whatever you’re doing to me!”
Lucien didn’t move closer. He simply watched, that calm, knowing smile still on his face. “I’m not doing anything, container. This is all you. The Core is responding to your fear. To your desperation. Let it speak.”
The energy kept gathering. A chunk of concrete the size of my head lifted higher, spinning violently. The lights above us flickered wildly. Cracks spread faster across the walls and ceiling as the power inside me pushed outward, demanding release.
“I can’t control it!” I screamed, dropping to my knees. “It’s too strong! It wants out! It wants to break everything!”
Soren reached for me, voice strained. “Elias, listen to me. You are still in control. Push it back. Don’t let it consume you!”
But it was too late.
A shockwave erupted outward from me in a blinding flash of purple-black energy.
The force slammed into Lucien, forcing him to step back for the first time. His coat billowed violently. His smile faltered for half a second before returning, wider than before.
The swirling debris exploded outward, embedding into the walls like shrapnel. The floor beneath me cracked in a perfect circle. Soren was thrown back against the far wall, groaning in pain.
I collapsed forward onto my hands, gasping for air, tears falling onto the broken concrete.
Lucien straightened his coat slowly, still smiling. “There it is.”
His voice was soft, almost proud. “There’s the real you. Not the frightened boy trying to stay human. The one who can shake the foundations of this world with nothing but fear.”
I looked up at him through blurred vision, chest heaving. “I didn’t want this… I didn’t ask for any of this power…”
Lucien took one careful step closer, eyes shining with fascination. “And yet here it is. Beautiful. Raw. Uncontrolled. You’re fighting so hard to stay small, Elias. But the Core knows what you truly are. And so do I.”
Soren pushed himself up, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead. “Lucien… stay away from him. He’s not ready for this. You’ll break him.”
Lucien didn’t even glance at Soren. His attention stayed locked on me. “He’s already breaking, Doctor. The question is whether he breaks into pieces… or breaks into something greater.”
I curled forward, pressing my forehead against the cold, cracked floor. The system interface kept flashing in my vision.
\[STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: 86%\]
\[POWER SURGE REGISTERED\]
Another percent gone.
I felt the Core inside me pulsing with satisfaction, stronger than ever before.
And for the first time, I realized with chilling clarity that Lucien wasn’t here to capture me.
He was here to awaken me.
