Chapter 41: The Collector

The masked stranger stepped fully into the flickering red light, hands relaxed casually at his sides.

Behind him, the hallway was littered with unconscious guards. They lay scattered across the floor like broken dolls, chests still rising and falling, eyes open but completely blank, bodies limp and unresponsive. They were alive, but their minds had been switched off.

Soren froze the moment he saw the man’s face.

Recognition flashed across his features, followed immediately by something darker, a deep, personal dread that made his usual calm crack wide open.

I felt it too, a strange, crawling familiarity radiating from the intruder. Like standing too close to the Abyss Gate again. The ancient presence inside my chest stirred violently, reaching toward him with dark recognition, almost hungry.

“Who are you?” I demanded, pressing my back harder against the cold wall. My voice shook badly. “What did you do to those guards? Why are you here?”

The stranger tilted his head slightly, studying me with calm, almost gentle interest. He reached up slowly and pulled his mask away, revealing a handsome face with sharp, refined features and eyes the color of deep twilight.

“My name is Lucien Vale,” he said calmly, his voice smooth and warm, carrying through the hallway like velvet over steel.

Soren’s gun hand trembled for the first time since I had known him. “Lucien… you have no right to be here. This facility is under IHA jurisdiction. Leave now.”

Lucien didn’t even glance at Soren. His eyes stayed locked on me, soft and intense at the same time. “I’ve come to collect what belongs to us, Elias.”

The words sent ice crawling down my spine. I felt my breath catch in my throat. “Belongs to us? What are you talking about? I don’t belong to anyone. I’m not property. I’m a person.”

Lucien took one slow, measured step closer, hands still relaxed at his sides. “Oh, but you do belong to something far greater than this cage they’ve built for you. The Core inside you… it remembers me. Doesn’t it? I can feel it reaching out even now, whispering my name.”

I felt the pressure in my chest surge in response, the ancient presence pulsing with strange, eager recognition. “Stop it. Get out of my head. I don’t know you. I’ve never seen you before in my life.”

“But I know you,” Lucien replied softly, his smile gentle. “I’ve been watching since the exact moment your name appeared on that seal. You are the first successful container in centuries. The others before you broke. They couldn’t handle the merge. But you… you’re different. You’re perfect.”

Soren stepped between us, gun raised and steady now. “Back off, Lucien. He’s under my protection. You have no claim here. Leave this facility immediately.”

Lucien’s smile didn’t waver. He kept his eyes on me, ignoring Soren completely. “Protection? Is that what you call chaining him to tables and running tests on him like a lab rat? Forcing him to suppress what he truly is?” He looked back at me, eyes softening further. “I can give you freedom, Elias. True freedom. No more countdowns. No more fighting to stay human. I can help you become what you were always meant to be.”

I felt tears burning in my eyes. “I don’t want to become anything else. I just want to be me. I want the voices to stop. I want to stop hurting people every time I feel something strong.”

Lucien’s expression turned almost tender. “That’s the lie they’ve told you from the beginning. That you have to stay small. Stay broken. Stay human. But you were never meant to be just human, container. You were meant to be so much more. And I can show you how without pain. Without fear. Without the constant struggle.”

Soren’s voice grew sharper, almost desperate. “Don’t listen to him, Elias. He’s with the group that wants to weaponize the Core. They don’t care about you as a person. They only care about the power you carry.”

Lucien chuckled softly, a low, pleasant sound that echoed strangely in the hallway. “Always the jealous protector, Doctor Ashcroft. You’ve spent years preparing this boy to be your perfect little vessel, and yet here I am, offering him the one thing you never could…genuine acceptance.”

I looked between them, feeling the Core inside me responding more strongly to Lucien’s presence, almost reaching toward him. “Why do I feel like I know you? Why does the thing inside me… recognize you like this?”

Lucien’s smile widened just a fraction. “Because we’ve met before, in a way. Across iterations. Across timelines. The Core and I have a long history. And now it’s time for you to come home, Elias. Time for you to stop fighting what you truly are.”

The pressure in my chest surged again. The lights above us flickered harder. A low crack formed in the wall beside me.

Soren raised his gun higher. “Take one more step and I will put a bullet between your eyes.”

Lucien didn’t even flinch. His eyes stayed locked on mine, gentle and intense. “The choice is yours, container. Come with me willingly, and I will show you wonders beyond your imagination. Resist… and I will still take you. But it will hurt more than it needs to.”

I felt my legs weaken. The ancient presence inside me whispered promises of power, of belonging, of never being invisible or powerless again.

And for one terrifying moment, part of me wanted to say yes.
