The Dangerous Plan
The Dangerous Plan
Draco's POV
I stepped harder on the gas pedal, letting the car run at an insane speed. My eyes locked onto the road, on the sight of Cole’s Porsche, which Luca drove. The almost yellowish glows of the streetlights picking up the moving mass of purple-coated steel moving at an equally insane speed as us ahead.
I thought driving so fast that I had to concentrate fully on driving would take away the image replaying in a loop in my mind. It didn't. I could still remember it clearly, fresh in my mind. My fingers tightened around the steering wheel as the images came down in a massive rush in my head.
I slapped my palm on the steering wheel. Then again, and again, and again, until the wheel began to creak under my grip.
Pain jarred up my palm to my arm, but it was nothing compared to the agony squeezing up my heart, twisting up my insides against themselves. Since I wouldn't have the steering wheel break, I slammed my palm against the dashboard now, the noise echoing like a wisp in the rush of air that screamed into the car at the speed I drove.
Cole wasn't supposed to die. I was supposed to protect him. I'd fucking promise I’d keep him alive, keep him from trouble. This is all my fault.
It was all my fault that Cole lay on the floor in that cafe, with his face frozen in death, chalk-white, except for the tiny drops of blood that dotted his face as people ran past his corpse. Bullet holes riddled his chest. His blood formed a small pool around him, hosting a variety of footprints.
Agent Bradley also lay beside him. His big, broad body wasn't spared either. He had a lot of bullet holes in him as a basket has holes.
I grabbed tighter to the steering wheel, and I shook my head, trying to shake the images from my mind. For a moment, it went, and I sighed—a low, lengthy sigh that vibrated my lungs. But then it was back, burning harder than before. My mind was replaying the scene in my head, making a simulation of what had happened.
It seemed Luca had used Cole and Bradley as a shield to escape Billy's fire.
Then he got Billy good in his stomach. With that body like a tank and a stomach the size of another tank, Billy was a crawling target for Luca.
He just had to get Billy, and the rest of his men were disoriented and confused. Then they went down too, as easily as their boss.
I lifted my arm to slam my palm against the dashboard again. But Logan caught it midair. I whipped my head to the side to him.
He shook his head at me. “Get a grip on yourself, Draco. Cole is dead. Rachel isn't. And you don't want her to end up that way. We also have to avenge Cole and Andrew. We have to make Luca pay for killing them,” he said.
I blinked off the tears staining my vision and dropped my hand back to the steering wheel, grabbing tighter to it. He was damn right. I had to focus on Rachel now. We had to get her back. And we had to make the bastard pay for the lives he’s taken and all he’s done. I turned to Logan again. “What now?” I asked.
Logan stared up ahead, his narrowed gaze following the Porsche as it swam through other vehicles on the road with incredible speed. “I think he is onto us.” He eventually said, his brows hung high on his forehead, his fingers stroking his lower lips. “He has just been going on and on for over thirty minutes now. He doesn't seem to be leading us to anywhere concrete. We have to make him take us to where he kept her. That is the only way we can get Rachel safely.”
I gritted my teeth for a grunt, but I eased them back, hissing instead. “That is still not a plan, Logan. Come on, come up with something.”
“Then let me fucking think.” He snapped, jamming his shoe to the car floor in a short fit.
“Okay,” I raised an arm to the air, turning back to the road. I sped through the midst of two cars, just as fast as Luca shot the Porsche through them, and then I resumed on a stretch of lonely highway after him.
Cool whispering winds fluttered in and out of the car, whipping my face and hands so hard I could almost feel the tiny strands of hair on my hands fluttering in the wind.
Suddenly, Logan’s voice boomed over the continuous whooshing-like noise of the speeding car. “We have to make Luca believe he’s got us. Then he would be forced to take us to wherever he keeps Rachel.”
“Got us?” I asked. I raised a brow at him. “What do you mean by that?” I blinked for a moment as the wind swept into my eyes.
I opened my eyes, and I saw him dipping two of his fingers into his mouth. He removed his fingers after, and then he stretched his palm to me.
I looked down briefly at the tiny device shifting gently on his palm in tune with the wind whispering into the car. I returned my eyes to the road before I drove us into a ditch.
I made another furtive glance at the device again. My lips curled up in distaste, brow cocked high at him. “And what the hell is this supposed to be?”
“A tracker. Got it from Ashton’s boys. He says it works. They can track us through it.”
“And I am supposed to ingest this?” I asked, squinting my eyes on it again before returning my eyes to the road.
“Well, if you want to see Rachel again.” He shook his head, forcing me a hard grin.
I did want to see her again, and alive. I shook my head grimly for a moment, then I snatched the device from his palm, throwing it into my mouth fast like a pill without a second thought. I felt the metal plating graze the wall of my throat as it flowed down to my belly. A metallic aftertaste lingered on my tongue.
“No fool!” Logan screamed, his face crunched tight, his eyes almost popping from their sockets as he stared at me. “I was only joking. Don't fucking swallow the thing. Just place it under your tongue or something.”
He leaned closer to me, his hand reaching for my mouth as if he wanted to pull out the device from my throat. I slapped his hands away from me. His conceited show of care was the last thing I needed.
I shut my eyes tight for a moment, and I coughed and coughed and coughed with every strength in my body. But nothing could get my stomach to release the device.
My face tightened in a frown, gaze smoldering as I steered it to him again. My fingers tightened around the steering wheel, folding, wishing it were his neck instead. “Why did you have to joke with something like that?”
“How should I know you will be foolish enough to swallow it?” He returned. He threw his face from me with a bit of nonchalance, shrugging his big shoulders. “It should still work in your belly.”
“After Luca, the next thing I am coming for is your neck.” I snarled at him. “What next?” I grunted, throwing my eyes fully to the road, my fingers quivering hard on the steering wheel.
He forced me a grin. “Just get close to the Porsche, and slam the car into it and let it slam into us back.”
“Then what?” I grunted again.
He forced me another smile that made me grind my teeth hard as I stared at him. My jaw nearly ached. “I’d handle the rest.” He said. “Just remember my rule number three. You follow my lead.”
I grunted, clenching my teeth again, as I stepped harder on the gas pedal. The car shot faster, almost like a blur, down the road, the wind screaming in harder, the cool air slapping my face.
I got near the Porsche and slammed the car into it, knocking the Porsche to the side a bit. The Porsche whipped against us in retaliation. The whole car vibrated as it skidded a bit to the side. I quickly maneuvered the wheel, slowly gaining control of our balance once again.
Just before I could set the car right, Logan shot his hand forward, gripping the steering wheel with me.
He forced a hard grin. “Hope you have your seatbelt on, brother.”
The word brother was a hint already. He only called me that when he was planning something dangerous. The twinkle that lit up his eyes was a clincher.
I started on my seat with alarm, and I grabbed tighter to the steering wheel. But he had already turned the wheel forcefully to the side.
We hit the sidewalk hard, and the car skidded, tumbling off the road.
