Chapter 124: 123 – Envelope
Maverick
Morgan was smiling as she watched our daughters. She still couldn’t speak, but I knew she was enchanted as she looked at the little ones sleeping peacefully side by side. After being discharged, Morgan came back with me to her mother’s house, where we’ll be staying for an indefinite period of time. The days are calm, and I’m grateful for that, but not everything is happiness. Morgan wakes up almost every night screaming her cries hoarse, shaky, and broken the fear covering her sweat-soaked face as she relives the terror that nearly took her life and the lives of our daughters.
Because of the night terrors, I took her to a doctor, who said everything points to post-traumatic stress disorder. And since Morgan couldn’t speak only make a few sounds, I also consulted a speech therapist, who started treatment to help her regain at least part of her speech.
Meanwhile, Laurel lives her days quietly, confined in her father’s house.
I hate how unfair this situation is.
I haven’t given up on my plan for revenge, but taking care of Morgan and our daughters comes first. Because of that, Micah took the mission upon himself and is determined to see it through successfully.
I wrapped my arms around my wife from behind and kissed her neck. Even after leaving the hospital, she still couldn’t make excessive movements. So she walked slowly around the house, always accompanied by someone, held our daughters with other people’s help, and watched them be placed back in their cribs.
—How are you feeling today?— I asked.
She gestured that she was fine, and I kissed her neck again, breathing in her scent—the one that calms the fears I desperately try to hide every day.
—My dear, you’d better get some rest,— Charlotte said as she entered the room and came closer, gesturing for Morgan to take her hand.
Morgan nodded, kissed my cheek, and left.
I watched my daughters sleep for a few minutes, until I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I hurried out of the room and answered.
—Micah,— I said.
—I’m on my way to you. I’ve got something that’s going to blow up Laurel’s perfect life for good,— he said abruptly and hung up.
—Okay,— was all I managed to say as I stared at the phone, even though I knew he’d already disconnected without waiting for a reply.
His urgency stirred something in me, putting me on edge. I went downstairs and tried to get some work done, but my mind couldn’t focus on anything other than the hurried words my friend had spoken.
After a while, Micah showed up in the office and asked that Charlotte and Brandon be present as well. Even without understanding why, I did as he asked. When the four of us were gathered in the room, he finally began to explain.
—Look at this,— Micah said, handing us an envelope.
We huddled together to read the document, and as my eyes moved over the words, a satisfied smile spread across my face while Brandon cursed and Charlotte gasped in surprise.
—Oh God,— Charlotte breathed.
—Are you sure this is real?— I asked, shaking the paper slightly.
—Absolutely,— Micah assured me.
—Where did you get this, Micah?— Brandon asked, concerned.
As a lawyer, he understands that a document like this isn’t easy to obtain.
—Laurel’s brother gave it to me,— Micah said.
Holy shit.
This is definitely real.
—So Laurel isn’t Joshua’s biological daughter,— I murmured.
The irony of the situation didn’t escape me. The bitch always carried herself as if she were better than everyone else, constantly throwing it in people’s faces that she had noble birth and all that nonsense about being Hill blood and now I find out the bastard is a bastard in every sense of the word.
This is hilarious.
—I don’t understand. Why would Caleb do this to his sister?— Charlotte asked, confused.
Micah gestured for everyone to sit down.
—Caleb hates his sister and is fed up with everything involving the family and Laurel’s abusive, toxic behavior, which has been getting worse day after day. He knows his father doesn’t intend to do anything about it. So he decided to take action and gave me this document, along with some other evidence proving that Laurel is a bastard,— Micah explained.
Inside the envelope were photos of Laurel’s mother with a man—probably her real father—proof of the adultery committed by the woman who pretends to be a perfect lady.
—What does Caleb expect by giving you this evidence?— I asked, intrigued.
Micah smiled, a predatory smile, the kind that only means one thing: destruction.
—He wants everything exposed and wants to see Laurel knocked off her pedestal once and for all.
Oh, this is going to be interesting. Very interesting.
I feel hope renew itself in my heart. I feel that the moment to settle the score with Laurel is very close, and I can hardly wait for it.
It will be a memorable moment.
My mind starts working on ways to turn this scandal into something even bigger—the fuel Laurel needs to lose control once and for all and burn herself in her own fire.
I want her to go insane, to lose control and explode.
Only then will I be able to watch her burn to ashes.
She just needs a little push, and this envelope is the ammunition I needed to make that happen.
She will destroy herself, and I’ll be watching from the front row.
