Chapter 50: Creatures Of The Night 2

Dominic’s POV

“What was that? “Summer said her voice barely above a whisper, it was obvious that she was frightened, so scared that I could already see her hands tremble by her side.

“I don’t know, but I have a feeling it wasn’t the only one.”

My words didn’t do much to calm because I could hear the ragging of her breath from where I stood. The creature’s smell was still there, faint but pungent and the smell still lingered in the air.

I had never seen something like it before I had heard their sound from afar and I should have done something sooner but the distraction of summers words, the memories of the times when she was still her, it all clouded my judgment.

The rustles of the bushes were still heard but this time it was three miles away; their breathing was ragged and I could hear their claws scratching at the ground. They had come in group of four with me killing one of them.

“Let’s go inside. It’s not safe here.”

I couldn’t tell her that there were still more of those things, her wolf senses couldn’t hear that far so she didn’t know and I could already hear her heart beat slowing down.

“What are those things?” She asked again, her eyes still fixed at the previous beast spot.

I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

I’d first thought it was the Lycan scheming through the forest like they always did. Young Lycans took their form at this time of the morphing season so I wanted to shield her from their wild behaviors, never had I thought I’d see something like that instead.

I turned to her, my eyes scanning her body for any marks or scratch, gladly there were none.

“I’m glad you’re safe. Athena.”

She opened her mouth to speak or protest like she’d been doing ever since but closed it a second later.

I didn’t know that she wanted to say but I could already tell that it would have been a protest to going back into the Lycan royal home.

It hurt that I had to say those words to her and had to me rude and even yell at her but I just couldn’t take it. The idea of her going away, running off into the wolf when things were just starting to make sense was something I could bear with and it brought out the anger in me.

She didn’t remember anything now but soon; all she needs was just a little more time and it’d all make sense to her.

I made a promise to keep her safe and out of any harm’s way even the ones she put herself into. I wasn’t ready to break that promise, heck I would never be.

I owed her my life.

She turned, following the part that led to the building and soon we were out of the bushes. She Lycan guards were fast asleep and I guess that was why they hadn’t noticed her pass by.

She didn’t glance at me all the way through and I didn’t blame her, the words I’d said weren’t very pleasant but much needed.

I didn’t know if to place it as a blessing or a curse but one thing was certain, with the arrival of this nee creatures, they were enough to frighten her and keep her idea of running away at bay. That was good for me, yes, but bad for the entire realm.

Who were these things and where did they come from?

We finally reached the mansion; Summer's silence was deafening. I could sense her anger and frustration, and I didn't blame her. I had been harsh with her, but I had to be. I had to protect her, no matter what.

We reached the gates, and I caught up to her, my hand grasping her arm. "Summer, wait," I said, my voice low and urgent.

She turned to me, her eyes flashing with anger. But I stood my ground, my eyes locked on hers.

"I didn't mean to hurt you," I said, my voice sincere. "I was just trying to protect you. I couldn't bear the thought of losing you, not again."

Summer's expression didn't change, but I could see the faintest glimmer of understanding in her eyes. But she didn't say a word. Instead, she turned and disappeared into the mansion, leaving me standing alone in the darkness.

I sighed, feeling a pang of regret. I had hurt her, and I knew it. But I had to protect her, no matter what. I couldn't let her go out there and face those... things alone.

I turned and followed her into the mansion, my eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of danger. But the halls were quiet, the only sound the soft rustling of the guards' uniforms as they stood at attention.

I made my way to Summer's chambers, my heart heavy with regret. I knew I had to make things right between us, but I didn't know how. All I knew was that I had to protect her, no matter what.

I reached her chambers and paused outside the door, my hand hesitating over the handle. I took a deep breath and pushed open the door, stepping inside.

The room was dimly lit, the only sound the soft crackling of the fire. Summer was sitting on the bed, her back to me, her shoulders stiff with tension.

I approached her slowly, my heart heavy in my chest.

"Summer," I said, my voice low and gentle. "I'm sorry. I was wrong to yell at you. I just...” I paused.”

There’s no point of explaining. “I said when she didn’t respond.

“Go to bed, gather your strength, okay?”

Yet again, the silence responded to me instead of her.

She didn’t want to speak to me and I took the hint and left the room closing the door behind me,

This was all for her own good and the sooner she realized it the better for her and myself. She wasn’t an outcast in this wall not while I still had a say.

I was going to protect her and that was final.
