Chapter 25
Lu Chen looked away first. He couldn't keep staring at her face without feeling like he was drowning in a narrative he hadn't fully edited yet. He turned his gaze toward a patch of moss growing between the courtyard stones, his jaw working as he processed the sheer weight of what had just been dumped on him.
"Damn... this is complicated," he muttered.
He ran a hand over his face, his palm feeling cold against his skin. He had dealt with angry fathers, a dying body, and a silent system, but this raw, unscripted attachment was a different kind of headache. He heard the sound of footsteps again. Xiao Zheng hadn't actually left. She had hesitated at the archway and then ran back toward him, her breathing still ragged.
She stood a few feet away, her eyes dimming as the initial rush of adrenaline began to fade. The hope wasn't there anymore, but she wasn't crying yet. She looked like she was holding herself together by sheer force of will, her hands clasped so tightly in front of her that her knuckles were white.
"I'm not asking to replace anyone," she said, her voice quiet but incredibly steady. "I know who you are. I know what Lady Su is to this house. I just... I don’t want to be nothing to you. I don't want to be just a shadow that brings you tea and disappears into the walls."
That line landed harder than Lu Chen expected. It hit him right in the center of his chest. In his old life, he had been a ghost, a man who wrote stories about other people's lives while his own went unnoticed. He knew exactly what it felt like to be "nothing" to the world. He looked at her really looked at hertaking in the way her servant’s tunic was slightly frayed at the collar and the way she was biting her lip to keep it from trembling.
Before he could even open his mouth to respond, a familiar, sharp twitch erupted in the back of his brain.
The system was back.
The blue screen didn't just flicker this time; it slammed into his field of vision with a brilliance that made him wince. It was aggressive, the light pulsing in time with his heartbeat.
\[New Task Unlocked\]
\[Lust Path Activated\]
Lu Chen’s eyes narrowed until they were just slits. He felt a surge of pure irritation. "Oh sweet Jesus, what’s this again?" he whispered.
The text on the screen continued to scroll, indifferent to his frustration.
\[Mission: Complete Lust Accumulation\]
\[Reward: Physical Recovery + Strength Increase\]
\[Failure: System Suppression Continues\]
He exhaled slowly, the breath whistling through his teeth. The system wasn't just directing his political moves anymore; it was crawling into his personal life, turning his domestic interactions into a currency for his survival.
"So now you want this too?" he thought, a bitter edge to his internal voice. "You want me to fuck my servant? That’s the path to recovery now? You really are a piece of work."
He looked at the failure condition. System Suppression Continues. That meant more collapses. More days spent as a vegetable while the plot moved on without him. It meant being weak enough for his father to crush him or for his enemies to finish him off. The reward was equally clear: Physical Recovery. He needed that. He needed to be able to walk across a room without feeling like his lungs were filling with lead.
His gaze shifted back to Xiao Zheng.
She didn't know. She couldn't see the blue light or the cold commands of the interface. To her, he was just standing there in silence, staring at her after she had poured her soul out. She was waiting, her heart literally in her hands, completely unaware that she had just become a mission objective.
Lu Chen’s expression changed. The confusion and the weird sympathy he had felt moments ago began to dry up, replaced by a cold, sharp calculation. He was a man who had been given a set of rules, and he was tired of losing. If the system wanted him to use the people around him to stay alive, then that was exactly what he was going to do.
"Well, I will gladly do that," he said, though the words were mostly for himself.
A small, dark smile spread across his face. It wasn't the smile of a lover; it was the smile of a man who had just found a way to win. His eyes drifted down her body, no longer seeing her as just a girl who was sad, but as a resource. She was pretty enough, in a quiet, understated way. She was loyal. She was already offering herself up.
"Xiao Zheng," he said. His voice was different now. It was smoother, devoid of the previous annoyance.
She looked up, hope flickering back into her eyes like a dying candle being fanned by a breeze. "Yes, Young Master?"
"You said you wanted to be more than nothing," he said, taking a step toward her. He watched her flinch slightly, then settle, her eyes widening as he approached. "You said your body belongs to me."
"It does," she whispered, her face turning a deep shade of crimson. "It always has."
Lu Chen reached out, his fingers brushing a stray hair away from her forehead. He didn't do it with tenderness; he did it with the clinical precision of someone checking the quality of silk. He could feel her heart hammering against her ribs even from a foot away.
"I have a lot on my plate right now," Lu Chen said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate hum that he knew would make her head spin. "The marriage to Su Yan is a political necessity. My father has already signed the papers, and the capital is watching. I can't stop that mission. It’s a game I have to play to keep this house from burning down."
Xiao Zheng’s face fell again, but before she could speak, he leaned closer, his shadow falling over her.
"But that doesn't mean you stay a servant," he continued. "Once I’ve handled the Su Yan situation and stabilized my position, I’m going to need someone I can actually trust. Someone who isn't there because of a contract or a name."
He saw her swallow hard, her throat moving as she processed his words.
"I’m going to make you my bed mate, Xiao Zheng," he said. He didn't sugarcoat it. He didn't call her a concubine or a second wife. He used the blunt language of the power dynamic they were in. "You’ll stay in this wing. You’ll be mine, officially. No more carrying tea for the rest of the staff. No more sleeping in the servants' quarters."
The shock on her face was almost comical. She stared at him, her mouth slightly open. This was everything she had dreamed of and something far more terrifying at the same time. She was being offered a place at the side of a villain, a man she loved but clearly didn't understand.
"Is that what you want?" he asked, his eyes locked onto hers.
"Yes," she gasped out, the word coming out before she could even think. "Yes, Young Master. I... I would do anything."
"Good," Lu Chen said. He stepped back, the cold calculation in his mind already moving to the next step. "Then go. Get yourself together. I’ll call for you when the time is right. And tell A-fu to stop hovering in the corner like a ghost. I have things to do."
Xiao Zheng bowed so low she nearly hit the ground. She turned and ran off, but this time her footsteps were light, almost frantic with a desperate kind of joy.
Lu Chen stood in the center of the courtyard, the sun beating down on his shoulders. He looked at the system screen, which was now glowing with a soft green light, indicating that the task had been accepted and the "Lust Path" was progressing.
He didn't feel like a hero. He didn't even feel like a particularly good man. He felt like a player who had just optimized his build. He had secured Su Yan for the political mission and he had secured Xiao Zheng for the physical recovery mission. He was surrounding himself with women who either hated him or loved him too much, and he was going to use every single one of them to make sure he didn't end up back in that void.
"This is getting messy," he muttered, turning back toward the library.
He realized now that the system wasn't just a tool; it was a hungry thing. It wanted more than just plot points; it wanted emotional and physical entanglements. It wanted him to be fully immersed in this world, to have stakes that weren't just about survival. It was forcing him to become the very thing he had always written about a man trapped by his own desires and the desires of those around him. “Now I understand what it really meant by the seven deadly sins”
He walked back into the shade of the building, the air cooling his skin. He had a marriage to accept, a father to deceive, and a servant to eventually bed. He was no longer just a man trying to survive a book;
Lu Chen reached the door to his room and pushed it open. The silence of the mansion greeted him, but it no longer felt empty. He didn't care who got hurt in the process. He had died once already, and he wasn't planning on doing it again for the sake of anyone else's happy ending.
The door clicked shut, locking the world outside. Inside, Lu Chen sat down at his desk and pulled out a fresh sheet of paper. He had a lot of things to write down before the sun went down.
The system flickered one last time.
\[Path Confirmed: The Villain's Ambition\]
\[Physical Recovery: 15% and climbing\]
"Watch me," Lu Chen whispered to the empty room. "Just watch what I do to this story."
