Chapter 153: Riley's POV
The judgments are done, and the Council chamber sits in heavy silence, processing what just happened.
Then Elder Magnus stands, and his expression shifts from grief to determination.
"We have punished the traitors. Now we must rebuild. Silverwood has been wounded, but we will heal. We will adapt. We will become stronger."
He looks directly at me.
"Riley Walker. Please step forward."
My heart hammers as I approach the Council seat.
"The battle proved beyond any doubt your worth, your courage, and your commitment to this pack.
You protected our students when you could have saved yourself. You fought beside our warriors when you could have fled. You demonstrated every quality a Luna should possess."
He glances at Alpha Marcus, who nods.
"Therefore, by Alpha decree and Council approval, I hereby recognize you as Luna-designate of Silverwood.
When Damien assumes the Alpha mantle, you will stand beside him as Luna. Not because of bloodline. Not because of tradition, but because you've earned it through character, sacrifice, and love."
Around the chamber, Elders stand. Even Elder Bran, who's always been skeptical of me. Even Elder Helena, who questioned my worth.
They're acknowledging me. Accepting me.
Through the mate bond, I feel Damien's overwhelming pride and love.
"Thank you," I manage, my voice thick with emotion. "I won't let you down."
"We know," Elder Magnus says. "Now go. Rest. Heal, and prepare for your mating ceremony, because Silverwood needs to see something hopeful after all this darkness."
I find Kaelen in the medical wing, in the same bed he's occupied since returning from the Chasm.
He's worse. The shadow corruption has spread to cover every visible inch of skin. His breathing is labored. His eyes are closed.
Professor Liora stands beside his bed, her expression grave.
"He's dying," she says quietly. "The corruption is consuming him. Hours, maybe. Not days."
"Can't you…" I start.
"No," she says gently. "I've tried everything. The shadows have claimed too much. His human consciousness is barely there anymore. But..." She pauses.
"He's been asking for you. Whenever he's conscious. I think he's holding on to say goodbye."
I approach the bed and take Kaelen's corrupted hand. It burns with shadow-magic, but I don't let go.
"Kaelen," I say softly. "It's Riley. I'm here."
His shadow-black eyes flutter open. When he speaks, his voice is that horrible dual-tone, but I hear him underneath.
"Did we... win?"
"Yes," I say. "We won. Axel is dead. The traitors are imprisoned. Silverwood is safe, because you warned us, because you gave us time to prepare."
Something like a smile crosses his corrupted features.
"Good... Redeemed... myself... a little..."
"More than a little," I assure him. "You saved lives, Kaelen. Hundreds of them. That matters."
"Riley..." His grip tightens weakly. "The shadows... they're calling... Can't... fight... much longer..."
"Then don't," I say gently. "You've fought enough. You've done enough. It's okay to let go."
Through my Luna senses, I feel his consciousness flickering. The shadows are winning their long war for his body.
But Kaelen isn't afraid.
"Tell... Vivienne..." he gasps. "Sorry... I couldn't... be better... for her..."
"I will," I promise, remembering how Vivienne spoke of him helping them in captivity. How even corrupted and dying, he'd tried to protect her.
Kaelen's eyes start to close, but he forces them open one last time.
"Thank you... for seeing me... Not just... monster... but... person..."
"You were always a person," I say. "Even when the shadows tried to make you forget."
He smiles. A real smile, free of shadow influence.
And then he's gone.
The shadow corruption fades from his body like smoke dissipating. What remains is just Kaelen, no silver-tainted veins, no dual-voice, no darkness.
Just a young man who made terrible choices, sought redemption, and found it in his final moments.
Professor Liora places a hand on my shoulder.
"You gave him peace," she says quietly. "That's a gift."
"He earned it," I say, wiping tears from my eyes.
Through the bond, I feel Damien approaching. He enters the medical wing and sees Kaelen's still form, understanding immediately.
"He's gone," I confirm.
"How do you feel?" Damien asks, pulling me close.
"Sad," I admit. "But also... grateful. He didn't have to come back. Didn't have to warn us. Didn't have to fight the shadows so hard. But he did, and that matters."
"It does," Damien agrees.
We stand there for a moment, honoring Kaelen's memory. A boy who was lost, found purpose, and died protecting the place that rejected him.
"We'll give him a proper ceremony," Damien says. "Honor his sacrifice alongside the others who fell."
"He'd like that," I say.
As we leave the medical wing, I touch the pendant Selena gave me. I think about Professor Cross's words about being a catalyst for change.
About Kaelen's redemption. About everything we've survived, and I realize something. Silverwood isn't just healing from battle wounds.
It's transforming, becoming something new. Something better.
A pack where character matters more than bloodline. Where redemption is possible. Where love triumphs over tradition, and I get to be part of building that future.
Not despite being an outsider, but because of it.
Damien squeezes my hand. "Ready for what comes next?" he asks.
I think about the mating ceremony. About becoming Luna officially. About all the challenges that still await.
"Yes," I say with absolute certainty. "I'm ready."
Because I'm not the scared scholarship girl who arrived at Silverwood months ago.
I'm Riley Walker. Luna-designate. Survivor. Fighter, and my story is just beginning.
